Honouring Your Horse’s Right To Choose

My name is Katrina Beath and I am a multi-modality equine therapist, fully trained, qualified and insured in equine massage, healing and Reiki. I co-teach on the Healing Animals Organisation's 'Diploma in Equine Healing' and run a human therapy practice alongside my equine work. My physical background is in equine sports massage, which I use to inform my own integrated style of therapy matching my philosophy, principles and values. My methods are a unique combination of my training and experience, as taught to me by my own horse during his rehabilitation from injury and confirmed by feedback from my four-legged clients.

MY PHILOSOPHY It is my belief that horses know what they need to help and heal themselves; they have a right to choose and express themselves, and it is our responsibility, as their human partners, to listen. To honour this philosophy, I allow the horse to take the lead in sessions and guide me to where they need me. CORE PRINCIPLE: HOLISM I value the principle of holism, meaning that I view all living beings as an inextricable interweaving of physical, emotional, energetic and mental processes that are best addressed as a 'whole package'. This is evidenced by my choices of training. CORE VALUE: FREEDOM I honour every person's and every horse's right to choose. This means that if your horse refuses treatment or a particular intervention, I will give it a rest, gently offer again, and if refused again I will try a different path. I need your horse to know that I am listening and responding, which increases the likelihood of them giving me accurate feedback and avoids shutdown. Sometimes, this leads to a temporary increase in troubling behaviour, often during the session, but in my experience, once expressed fully the behaviour often subsides.

As a dissertation year student of Humanistic Counselling, your emotional wellbeing is as important to me as your horse's, and there is always room for us to explore how you are doing in relation to your equine partner.
