One of my favorite set ups for the big dogs. Marks up and out of water. 4 marks and 1 blind. Ran 3 singles and ran one bird as a poison bird memory bird. All the dogs did good. Young dogs got 3 marks in water. One mark out of the water for the transition dogs.
Here’s an uninterrupted 3 minute video of a training session with Grace. We’ve taught all the commands separately and are beginning to put them all together in a combined session. We are also starting to treat less expecting compliance longer and longer prior to a reward. No one wants a dog that only works for food. We also have a period here where a young dog gets distracted and we are working on regaining focus. We don’t normally do visits to houses but this is a special case. Grace is a support dog for a retired veteran so of course we are going to make accommodations to help them out.

We completely understand that training is not cheap and that it’s hard to give your family member up for extended periods of time. That is why we do individual 1 on 1 classes, up to an hour, where we train you how to handle your dog then give you homework until your next visit.
***Now we will be offering this as a group class if anyone is interested. We would like to keep groups of 4 maximum and are offering this on Saturday mornings, times can fluctuate. Price is $15 per person required at scheduling. There will be no refunds if you can not attend as the class is still scheduled and others will still be attending. Please reach out for more information. These courses can be obedience or gun dog training.

Well I’m trying to run water T with the other dogs and when I looked up Dax got caught in the crossfire. That’s him to the right just sitting in the water contemplating what his next move is. He doesn’t know if he should move or sit still. Ares doesn’t seem to mind him though.
This cool weather has us thinking about doves and ducks! 3 months for ducks and 1 month for doves! We can’t wait! If you’ve got some pictures of you and your dogs from hunting seasons put them in the comments. We’re beginning the countdown to season!
Long mark for today. Wind is crossing left to right and slightly in their face. The goal is to not fade behind the gun into the draw with the wind.
Spring Hill Gun Dogs is located rurally between Salem, Mt. Vernon, Wayne City, and Flora. We have been operating since 2019 and are a state licensed kennel. We offer gun dog training, obedience training, hunt test training, and boarding services.
Some days you go out and do all the big fun stuff with calls and guns and birds and some days you stay in the yard and do the blind training, steadiness drills, and obedience. A strong foundation is the most important part. You need the simple and boring stuff is just as or more important than the big stuff.
Apparently it’s national mutt day… so here’s my $50 half lab/golden HRCH Spring Hill’s Just a Mutt “Dax.” Couldn’t ask for a more frustrating, forgiving, bull-headed, independent, loving, duck-getter! He’s almost 8 now and man the time sure flies. We’ve had some good experiences together and some rough ones but that’s what keeps it interesting and makes it fun. He’s the best dog a guy could ask for.
We had quite the storm last night but all dogs are good and safe.
Not only can we teach your dog to place in a blind we can teach kitty cats! Barn cat 2020 sure took some time to teach considering it’s 2024 but with patience and many bandaids from scratches he’s really coming along. 🤣
With hunting season coming up we will be having dogs starting to go home in the next few months. If you are looking for a tune up before dove/duck season, obedience training, or just boarding for a late summer vacation then reach out and we would be happy to help!

Miss Rosie came to stay with us for a 10 day board and train program. We were able to sure up some of her obedience and her collar conditioning to the “come” command. The work that Rachel Williams and her already put in really helped train her quicker. Thank you for the opportunity.
Got a little visit today from my wife and future pooper scooper while training today. We had some good company today. Big dogs did good on a challenging set up but my little dogs looked like they’ve never run a mark before in their life! (PS abbey was just wearing my hat. While it looks good on her it looks way better on me! 🤣)

Well since it’s been raining since 5AM, half of southern Illinois is flooded, and I prefer not to get me or the dogs electrocuted, we have resorted to kennel obedience for the day. Here’s a picture of a few of the dogs. Stay safe everyone.

Here’s a quick video of how I like to teach initial whistle sits. This dog has been through a few sessions and has even been through reinforcement with the e collar and the sit command but that always comes after we just do a fun bumper game. I blow the whistle, say sit, and reward the dog when their butt goes down. We build on this by only rewarding quicker and snappier sits. If they’re facing away from me, they only get rewarded if they turn and face me. This builds dogs that loves the sit whistle. Only after a day or two, we stop saying the word sit and it is only the whistle. At that point, we do go into a traffic cop and sit them multiple times between where they started and me.

This was one of our two blinds for today with the big dogs. Down a steep embankment, in the water, onto the island, through the grass, and off the island into the channel for the bumper. This was after throwing a double with the memory bird being off to the left about 100 yards in and out at angles pushing back up another hill. The go bird was on the island. In line with the blind.
Boots has been another interesting bird dog to take through a retriever program. She’s really starting to figure it out though. Matthew Bowling
