Feeding Horses in 1856:
Dr. Stewart provides various feeding schedules based on the type of horse: cart, carriage, hunter, cavalry, race -horse, and saddle horse. For most horses he recommends feeding five times per day: 6am, 9:00am, 1:00pm, 5:00pm, and 8:00pm with a total consumption of 12-16 pounds of grain (oats and beans) with 12 pounds of hay. He recommends feeding boiled food in the winter at the last meal of the day and adding turnips. He believes carrots should be given raw throughout the day. His recommendations include adding barley for horses in laborious work. The ratio then being 6:3:3 (oats to beans to barley) plus hay.

Considering what we know about feeding horses today, it's fascinating to do a little compare-and-contrast with Stewart's 1856 observations.

FREE TESTING FOR STANDARDBREDS IN THE UNITED STATES

EquiSeq is seeking Standardbreds in the United States for a study.

Standardbreds have a high incidence of the K1 variant of COL6A3. The P2 variant of MYOT is also present in this breed.

Standardbreds appear to be free of the P3 variant of FLNC, the P4 variant of MYOZ3, and the P8 variant of PYROXD1, based on a sample of 50 Standardbreds.

The aim of this study is to identify K1/K1 homozygotes free of other variants. Several such horses have been identified in the European Union, but so far, none in the United States, except in archival samples from horses that are not available for study.

If you have one or more Standardbreds in the United States, please consider joining this study. You will receive results for the EquiSeq Myopathy Panel (P2, P3, P4, P8, K1, and Px) at no cost.

If your horse is of interest to us, we may ask for a 10 ml EDTA blood draw and veterinary records as part of the study.

In anticipation of your questions:

1. This is for Standardbreds in the United States only. No other breeds, no horses outside of the United States.

2. To join the study, please email Paul Szauter ([email protected]) with your postal mailing address and the number of Standardbreds that you have. You will receive a consent form, hair sample packs, and a postpaid return envelope.

3. Test results will be returned to you as they become available. This may take several months from the time that we receive your sample.

Thank you for considering this.

Social media is a really cool thing because we are able to connect with people all over the world that we otherwise wouldn't be able to meet in person. It even allows us as horse owners and hoofcare professionals to see a variety of cases virtually, and watch how others are dealing with pathology, lameness, and various hoof issues.

That being said, I am always incredibly hesitant to give any trim advice without seeing a horse in person. When I make trim decisions, I have countless factors swirling around in my head as I hope to have the horse walk off better than before it walked up. One seemingly insignificant trim decision could make a previously comfortable horse sore, based on a myriad of factors, even if we thought our trim was harmless.

Seeing a horse in person from various angles, watching them move, talking to the owner about their environment, what is expected of them workload wise, what kind of diet they are on, and noting their wear patterns and hoof health all give us clues as to how we might tackle a foot.

I think social media is great and I love that people are so willing to donate their time to give their opinion on various cases, but always remember that what we see in photos might not be a true representation of what we would see in person. Always listen to your horse, and allow them to have the final say on what works best for them!
