The story of the “Maxx Pink” Argentine boa, Boa constrictor occidentalis

• Back in 1993 I started acquiring Argentine boas for future breeding stock that I thought when combined, would exhibit enhanced pink or reddish coloration in their offspring. I loved boa constrictor, the durability to cold and smaller size of the Argentine boa, but thought that Argentines would have difficulty competin

g in the future marketplace in their traditional coloration. I was a student of boa constrictor color and pattern, used words like “widows peaks”, pointed out “different” pattern and color variations in certain localities, and was often looked at like I was a foolish 23 year old by my older colleagues. This was the late 80’s and early 90’s mind you. morphs existed at that time, I could see a thirst in the marketplace for reptiles that were colorful. The old timers (my pals) of the day scoffed “the only good Argentine boa is a jet black one!” But I wanted to go in a different direction and started selectively breeding Argentines that I thought would eventually produce boas with a brighter background and enhanced “pink” color. After two decades, the selective breeding of many litters, and a little luck, it worked! “Maxx Pink” Argentine boas by Ancient Reproductions were born.

• These Argentine boas are PURE “normals” that have been selectively bred to bring out desired coloration. The trait is likely polygenic in nature involving multiple alleles. All of the founder stock for this project are also PURE normal Argentine boas, from origins as diverse as I could find in the early 90’s. The precise combination of blood lines to achieve these results is proprietary, its our secret sauce.

• These “Maxx Pink” Argentine boas being offered for sale here are going on 26 months old and are 4.5’-5’ long! Why would anyone ever voluntarily raise an entire litter of boas for almost two and a half years, spending all of that additional time, food, housing and money, before offering them for sale? Well, since many Argentine boas display pink coloration as babies, but loose it as they mature, rearing this entire litter to this age was done to prove to the marketplace absolutely that we have made real permanent change in the appearance of these boas. It also gave me an opportunity to collect an incredible amount of information to document the development of the project. These boas as babies retained amazing color, as their parents did, and have grown into gorgeous colorful sub adults. The ENTIRE litter is stunning, not just a small percentage of the offspring. What this means is that you can be confident that when you purchase these, what you see is what you will get! These boas are stunning as babies, and through adulthood and will produce amazing colorful boas for you. Purchase with confidence

• To my knowledge, based on much ongoing communication with many
through out the US, for two decades, these snakes are unique. This is a first ever opportunity to purchase Argentine boas with this coloration, from a proven line, and with a two year head start on your project.

• IMPORTANT- The colony from which these snakes are from has been closed since 1994. Yes really. In addition to that, Argentine boas are the ONLY boa constrictor we work with. The colony has never had mites, and has never suffered any major disease issue. The entire colony is also fed from our on- site rodent colony to further control quality. If you have made a substantial investment in time and dollars into your collection, purchasing boas from this colony is about as safe an investment as buying boas gets. This is a rare opportunity

• The snakes pictured here, and subsequent ones offered for sale from this litter, represent the best of the best offspring ever offered from this project. To get to this point represents a huge investment in time, dollars, and dedication over 20 years. I believe this line can definitely “improve” further both in color and ways I don’t yet know. With the creativity and knowledge of the community, I think the possibilities are MANY, and that these boas represent a new exciting launch point for Argentine boas in the hobby. The snakes of this breeding may never be available again from us so consider that as you contemplate a purchase. I think this offering represents a tremendous value and I only look forward to see what others do with these wonderful creatures. Thanks to everyone for all of the support, kind comments, and words of encouragement over the years as this project has developed! The reptile community is a great family. Warm Regards,

BCO (Argentine boa) FAQ: Argentine boas are as much or more durable than any Boa constrictor I know of. They are long lived (mine routinely go into mid 20's), BCO are easy feeders with great appetites, BCO reach sexual maturity as small as 10-12lbs for females, have a wonderfully complex appearance, are easy to handle and work with, and are rarer in the marketplace. BCO are really great Boa constrictors, my opinion of course!! Check out our store on MorphMarket

US Captive Farmed Reptiles would not be where they are without US Produced Rodents! When we talk about the benefits of our industry to a regulator, don't forget the rodents! The photo is our usual 1 ton rat food order, half unloaded, that lasts about a month. Our supplier is local, family run, is located in a rural county (with one traffic light) and sells approximately 150 TONS of food annually used for raising rodents to feed reptiles. Not Bad! This type of economic impact is positive and something you can share proactively with a regulator or community leader in your area. Communicating the value of what we do and educating folks is key for progress as most don't understand the hobby or business. Have some patience. Thanks for what you do farmers. If its a handful of reptiles or hundreds, you make a difference!

Happy Friday! Here are a few bullets on husbandry that might help some of you? Or just give some insight to my methods. This is NOT a complete list, by any means. I had a customer ask for some basics, so I thought I would share with the community.

*I do newspaper for substrate.
*I use ceramic crocks for water bowls and clean them each time I clean the enclosure. I have gone to the extent of keeping the same water bowl in the same enclosure.
*I work with a bucket of disinfectant for hooks and other tools that I use in normal servicing.
*I use multiple tools often times of same variety so I can give one some soak time in bucket while I use the other. I might use three hooks for instance at once, most often at least two.
*I don’t spot clean, but rather do complete change outs, disinfectant soak, sun dry, new substrate
*I believe in an extended quarantine time, we last practiced a year
*If I have a snake with questionable health, it is worked last, not in normal order. Or even on a different day when I am not exposed to any other livestock.
*In a larger operation with multiple colonies of same species, I would often work youngest to oldest through colonies, minimizing exposure from going other direction. The thinking is younger is less exposed and healthier.
*With a newer or developing (that means adding animals frequently) collection, having an area to separate an animal that presents with an issue can be a plus. Think mites or a disease scare.
*As I work I do small things to minimize the “spread” or f***l material or air born debris. For instance, when I gather dirty newspaper bedding, I roll and fold it to put it into the garbage can, effectively “containing” much of the debris. Thought has been given to how the newspaper is put down, so especially in larger enclosures, it can be easily rolled up in one piece per half enclosure all at once.
*I remain vigilant regarding the freshness of disinfectant and doing things like keeping the lids of my three 110 gal bleach soak tanks covered when not using to maintain strength of cleaner.
*I make a point to bring fresh air into all areas with live animals on a routine basis. We must realize we are loading an artificially concentrated amount of biomass into an artificially small area. Fresh air is very cleansing. Read about this if interested and what ozone really does outdoors in a natural situation.

**Ten year old pic for fun...For size reference, the male pictured is likely approximately 10lbs. Make the female ?? ** the enclosure they are in is 39" deep, 8' wide. Be good y'all!

HEY PODCASTERS:

PLEASE CONTACT ME If you have a small amount of time to talk about the BEST story in herpetoculture, not being told. I'm referring to the topic of "Reptile Farming." Or the US captive production of reptiles. Here in Florida, with multiple established reptiles outdoors in our environment introduced by the pet trade, a growing list of banned species, per our regulator, there are NO Morph reptiles established outdoors in Florida. Why are we not using this as a selling point for captive farmed reptiles? It's a fantastic opportunity to communicate the many positive economic and environmental benefits of Captive Farmed Reptiles.

Feel Free to DM, call or email. Thanks. [email protected], 352-804-7315

ALERT Parents: Your Child Loving Dinosaurs and Science could open the gateway to become REPTILE FARMERS. Eeeeeeek!! LMAO...At 10 yo I discovered you could dig fossils in creeks not too far from our house. I went overboard as usual. Award for my science fair project, second tier, "Flora and Fauna of Gainesville Are Creeks." Went on to state level in Mariana FL. Some teachers judging didn't believe I found the fossils myself. This "stage" of my childhood helped me put four fossils into the FL State Museum and spend a lot of fun hours outdoors with buddies.

From a creator in Uraguay I believe. I don't know the history on this snake, but again, in the vein of showing that color is a natural part of the BCO color palate, I wanted to share. I'm guessing the snake is not the product of many generations of selective breeding but I am not certain. I have had multiple keepers in South America tell me they have started projects to bring out the color due to our Maxx PInks as customer's have contacted them asking about them.

German kept Argentine boa adults along with offspring from the pairing. Check out the neat yellows in the one adult. I wanted to grab a BCO example from a EU producer just to give an idea of how much variation exists. I personally can't remember a BCO in the US with the yellow highlights. Even the heavy pink baby is laying down color different than our Maxx Pinks do it. I did not see the producer name, but here is a link to the listing. https://www.terraristik.com/tb/buy-and-sell/boa-constrictor-occidentalis/a1005442/

PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN Boa Constrictors AND Comment ...."So few BCO were brought into the US roughly 40-50 years ago that it was impossible for those snakes to be a complete representation of naturally occurring wild type appearances. In reality, the looks often considered as "wild type" originally were the selections of the collector and importer. When most everything else in BC was light or buff in color, I believe, based on my recollections from the late 80's on, those selections focussed on "dark" individuals as they were what was different and most eye catching at that time." - Bob Guerriere

Maxx Pink Argentine Boa FAQ - Why aren't the adults Pink? Great Question as in reality the accent color is orange, red, pink and many shades in between.

Short answer is, it took us 10 years from first purchasing our stock until we had the first indication of what color on an adult could look like. And another 15 to get close to present day form. Before then, we only had the PINK color on the babies to go on, hoping we could get some of that to remain as adults. We had no idea what was possible, but by then the name was "out there."

on YT. THANKS for the questions from the last vid about increasing metabolism through frequent feeding. Here I touch on the metabolism feeding technique and talk about "REST." What do you think regarding "rest" and your boas or reptiles? What is it? Is it necessary? My quick thought is that our captives are so inactive physically, that perhaps being more active in a metabolic sense might even be beneficial? THOUGHTS??

Another cool Maxx Pink outcross. This snake was produced by William Babcock but owned by localityboaboss at the time the pic was taken. This pic is from a few years back, I'm not sure of its current appearance. I believe this was sired by a snake similar to what I started our high contrast project with that I called "Maxx White." Just a hunch.

Our Story

At Ancient Reproductions, we grow some of the most ancient plants and animals that currently exist on earth, palm trees, boa constrictors, and pythons. It’s a different name that comes from the thinking that we are reaching back in time to reproduce plants and animals that have origins up to many millions of years ago. Palms, for instance, are in the fossil record, in much the same form as today, that date up to and beyond 50 million years old.

In reptiles, we started in the dawn of herpetoculture in the late 80’s and grew our collection steadily, eventually producing several thousands of reptiles commercially. Having always maintained long term colony goals, I have been able to select for some stunning color and pattern variants. We are currently offering the most colorful Argentine boas ever produced and stunning Borneo short tail pythons. Species farm produced include Albino monocle cobra, Indian Cobra, West African Gaboon viper, Kenyan sand boa, Argentine boa, Burmese python, Ball python, Green Tree python, Borneo short tail python, Brazilian Rainbow boa, and Dumeril boa.

Reptile production consulting also provided. Our typical focus is best practice improvement to maximize production, efficiency, animal health, and profitability. Following consultation, clients have realized as much as a 600% production improvement with minimal additional investment.

Ancient Reproductions was founded in 1989 when I decided to get serious about my huge passion for understanding and farming reptiles. In those years “farming reptiles” was just beginning and everyone looked at me funny when I used the phrase. It was a time when much of what we know today regarding husbandry and reproduction was uncharted territory. To be a part of the beginnings of commercial reptile production and doing things with these amazing animals that no-one in the world had done, was irresistible. At that time in pursuit of a biology degree and with a nose for business, Ancient Reproductions was born. Those years were the dawn of modern day herpetoculture and the opportunity to learn, work with and breed many reptiles was both exciting and extremely challenging. From that time, at Ancient Reproductions, we have successfully farm produced several species of reptiles, enjoyed some unique accomplishments, learned a lot and met many great people along the way.
