In a bit of good news ... Little Mowgli tested negative for panleuk/parvo so we were finally able to schedule his consult with the dental specialist! 😍 He will see Dr. McCoy of Texas Veterinary Dental Center Monday.

Meet Frances "Frank"—your future feline BFF! 👯

Frank might have started off as a shy, skinny visitor on her foster mom's patio, but now she’s a playful, loving cat with a personality as bright as her stunning blue eyes. 🩵✨

Once she decides you're her person, there's no going back—she'll be your loyal companion, always ready for head rubs, cuddles, or just gazing lovingly at you. 😻

Frank is a curious little adventurer 🕵️ 🔎who loves zooming from room to room, especially if there's a fun game of chase with her foster brother involved. 🏃🏽‍♀️

She’s a sucker for string toys, especially the ones with fish 🎣 or bird toys that make chirping sounds. 🐦 When she's not playing, you can find her lounging on the cat tree or sunbathing on the windowsill, enjoying her favorite pastime—napping. ☀️ 😴

While Frank’s heart is huge, she’s a bit selective about her kitty companions. She's not a fan of other female cats but might warm up to a chill male cat with some patience and time. And let’s not forget—Frank LOVES her treats, so don’t be surprised if she shows up right on time for snack time! 😋

🐾Today's Did You Know? comes from Betsy 🐾

Did you know? A healthy diet is key to a happy, energetic pup! Here are some important facts to keep in mind when feeding your furry friend:

🍗 **Protein Power**: Dogs need a diet rich in high-quality protein to build and maintain strong muscles. Lean meats like chicken, turkey, and fish are great choices!

🥦 **Veggies & Fruits**: Just like us, dogs benefit from a balanced diet that includes vegetables and fruits. Carrots, green beans, and apples (without seeds) are excellent, healthy snacks.

🥖 **Carbs**: Whole grains like brown rice and oats provide the necessary energy for all that zooming around. Avoid feeding them bread or pasta, though, as these can be hard for dogs to digest.

🦴 **Healthy Fats**: Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids found in fish oil or flaxseed are essential for a shiny coat and healthy skin.

By the numbers … In addition to the three medical cases we mentioned yesterday, there are 17 dogs and 93 other cats (96 in total) being cared for in our program.

We thought you might like to see what closing intake means for us … The AVERAGE number of actual intakes we accepted from January through July of this year is three dogs and 19 cats. 🐶🐱 In a nutshell, it means we can’t help rescue more animals from the streets of Houston. ☹️

While there’s no way a rescue our size can possibly intake ALL the animals, just imagine the volume if you consider other rescues probably received similar requests. It’s daunting. As a rescue that is 💯 volunteer-driven and foster-based (we have no paid staff or facility), we do our best and with your help, we can continue. ☺️

🐾 Meet Frankie, the ultimate lap-warmer and all-around good boy! 😻

This dashing snowshoe mix comes with a coat so stunning it could be on the cover of a cat fashion magazine. 📸💁‍♂️

Frankie is a pro at cuddling—whether it's in your lap or just chilling nearby, he's happy as long as he's close to you. 🥰

Dearest AJL Family:

We regret to inform you that we made the difficult decision to temporarily close our "doors" to intake. 🙁 Believe us when we say, we don't like this any more than you.

The unfortunate reality is that we've been hit HARD with medical cases over the last few months -- to the tune of about $15,000. 🙀 These babies suffered cruelty at the hands of humans and we're not turning our backs on them now -- or the other animals in our program (96 cats and 17 dogs). You've met these kitties before ...

🐱 Garfield -- Was shot. When his remaining teeth were removed, the surgeon discovered a giant hole where the bullet remains (YES! It's still there!), which is why he has chronic congestion and other issues. There are bullet fragments wafting around in his skull ... His surgery is $3,000.

🐈 GracieMay -- Was thrown from a car. She barely weighed 1.5 lbs. She suffered a severely broken leg, which became infected. We repaired the leg (to the tune of several thousand dollars) and she was good as new. Or so we thought ... Until one day when GracieMay couldn't open her mouth because her jaw was clenched shut. It was only then we realized she also sustained a shattered TMJ when she was thrown from that car. Her surgery is $6,000.

🐈‍⬛ Mowgli -- Was found outside in a bush, abandoned by someone for who knows how long. He has a gosh-awful abscess on his mouth. That we can't treat yet because he tested positive for panleukopenia. The dental surgeon said the abscess is likely not getting better quicker because of the panleuk. As soon as he tests negative, we'll repeat his blood work and be on our way to figuring out just what the heck that thing is growing on his little jaw. Cost: ❓❓❓

This doesn't count Wink (fka Mateo) who requires an enucleation, a few ER visits for other minor, yet emergent, issues and we are tapped out. 😢

🐾 Meet Cody! 🐾

Cody is a sweet and playful 2-year-old rescue pup looking for his forever home! His favorite pastimes include chewing on his favorite toys and playing keep-away. Cody might be a bit shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he’s all about the fun and games!

He gets along well with dogs of all sizes and loves a good chase in the backyard. Cody is also a vigilant protector of the bird feeders—squirrels, beware! 🐦

This smart boy is potty trained, knows how to use a doggy door, and is crate trained, though he can be trusted to roam freely in the house when you’re away. At night, Cody prefers the coziness of his kennel.

🆘 URGENT FOSTER NEEDED 🆘

Poor Maia just can't catch a break! 💔

You may remember a plea we sent out a couple months ago for Maia and her mom, Nyla, Nyla is transporting to Minnesota this week 🙌 but Maia needs a new foster.

Her foster mom's living situation has changed and Maia needs a new place 🙀 BY AUGUST 23! 🙀

Maia needs a very special foster ... She is very afraid of people following an unfortunate incident at a pet store. She loves a Churu (what girl doesn't?), but other than that she needs her space and does not want to be handled. She requires a patient, understanding an experienced cat foster. 🙏 She's only 15 months old and we really want to show her that not all people are bad.

If you can bring Maia into your home as a foster, we'd be forever grateful. If you cannot foster, please share with your networks to help us find Maia a soft place to land.

Even with your overwhelming generosity, we're still short on litter! We go through about 12 to 20 boxes of litter each week. 🙀 Many parasites are passed through litter boxes so it's important to completely empty out a litter box every three to four days so kitties cannot reinfect themselves or each other. 🫤

This lanky fellow has a purr so loud, he’s earned the nickname, "Rumble-bee" 🐝. He's a Mama’s boy through and through—whether it’s his human mom or his feline one. 😻

Sometimes rescue is hard. 😢 When we said this kitten season has been brutal, we were not kidding!

Meet Patti LaBelle. 🐈‍⬛ She’s a survivor. She and another kitty (we named it Ross - not even sure if male or female) were dumped at our storage facility a couple weeks ago.

We grabbed them on Monday and before we could even get them to the vet Tuesday AM, little Ross passed away. 🌈 He had what we thought was a severe URI. Turns out it probably was panleuk. 😿 Why do we think this? Because Patti LaBelle tested positive.

Our vet said she is feisty, though. She was eating a little and drinking, which were definitely good signs. She also was full of parasites so she had bad 💩.

Patti LaBelle is one of two kittens this season that tested positive for panleuk.🤮 Mowgli still has to see the dental specialist about the weird abscess going on with his jaw … But he has to test negative for panleuk first.

Then we have Garfield, an adult kitty 🐈who needs extensive surgery on his mouth. He’s missing half his jaw (he already had all his teeth removed) because he was shot and a bullet is still lodged in his oral cavity and there are fragments everywhere. 🙀

Wink still requires an enucleation, which is scheduled for a couple weeks away. 👁️ And let’s not forget about little GracieMay … We’re just waiting for her to get big enough for surgery! ☺️

And in-between these that require a little more hand-holding and attention, there are lots of healthy cuties waiting for their forever homes! 🏠

We appreciate everyone who has contributed to our kitten “shower” so we can keep all our kitties well-fed and their litter boxes full. 😹 Be on the lookout as we share updates on our medical kitties …

🌸 Meet Lily: The Adorable Bulldog Mix in Need of a Home! 🌸

Looking for a charming ensemble? How about a pearl necklace with a pink bow and a set of cute pink booties? And guess what? It comes complete with the sweetest bulldog mix you'll ever meet – Lily! 🐶💕

Lily's journey began when she was found in Eastwood, bravely standing in the middle of the road while cars passed around her. Malnourished and exhausted, and having recently had a litter of puppies, she greeted her rescuer with a tired smile and a gentle tail wag. She eagerly jumped into the back seat, and her journey to find a furever home began. 🚗❤️

Lily is now putting on weight and getting close to her ideal 50 pounds. She LOVES to snuggle and just wants to be with her foster family, which includes a golden retriever sister and a stumpy tail Australian cattle dog brother. 🐾 She enjoys basking in the sun, running around with her siblings, and, of course, eating! 🍖

When Lily first arrived, she had no manners at all, but she’s a quick learner! She’s almost potty trained, good in her kennel and the car, learning to eat slowly, and is a notorious toy destroyer! 🧸 The vet estimates she’s about 2 years old, and she’s heartworm negative and up to date on all her shots. 🩺

A.K.A Mellie, Meller Time & Marshall Mellow 😻 His singsong trilling and stunning movie star good looks ensured he was voted "best looking" and "most likely to succeed" in high school… one of the cool cats if you will. 🤩 Mel is pretty easy going with other cats and will even tolerate those pesky dogs, as long as they know who the real boss is. 😎 Even though Mel is a mature, adult cat, he’s still quite playful. 🌟 GracieMay UPDATE 🌟 Happy Sunday! ☀️ It’s been a while since we updated you on GracieMay’s condition … And that’s because the dental surgeon and anesthesiologist wanted to consult with their colleagues 👩🏻‍⚕️ before formulating a surgical plan 😷 (and that took a few weeks). The CT scan showed GracieMay’s TMJ is a hot mess! 🙀 Obviously, that’s not the technical term. The surgery is not without risk … However, the greatest risk right now is her size. You see, her doctors, or any of their peers, have never performed this type of major jaw surgery on a kitten so small. Yikes! 😳 Before we can even consider scheduling surgery, GracieMay must grow a bit more. 🐱 The anesthesiologist wants to se her next month when she turns six months to take measurements of her trachea. 📏 The entire team is being extremely cautious to ensure the safest and most successful outcome.
