My Theory on Massage

In 2017 I went to Virginia to study and become certified in equine and canine massage at Equissage. Since then, I’ve made it my goal to inform pet owners of the benefits of massage therapy for their family members, whether horse partner or canine companion.

The obvious benefits of sports massage are increased blood flow (which promotes healing after injury), relaxation, and calm, balanced animals. The unseen benefits include better lymphatic flow (which reduces swelling), easier digestion, and a sense of security achieved through gentle, confident touch.

Both horses and dogs carry most of their weight over their front legs, which can cause tension and stress in the neck and shoulder area. Horses wear saddles and carry humans, which puts stress on their back muscles. Dogs participate in Flyball and extreme Frisbee sports, which can stress their hips and back legs.

Some horses (like mine) are pasture ornaments, and some dogs (like mine) are couch potatoes. Whether your horse fits into a working/riding/showing category or just stands around looking good, wouldn’t they all benefit from a good massage? Even if the most strenuous thing your dog does all day is make their way to the food bowl, don’t they still deserve to be relaxed, happy, and comfortable? I think so.
