Dearest Friends,

It is with great sadness that I announce the closing of Second Family effective December 1st 2024.

It has been seven years filled with laughter, love and yes, a little heartache. We lost our most favorite goofball, Buddy, to cancer this year. He, his sister Nala and their Mom, Whitney have been with us from the very beginning. Buddy and Nala bounded in and out a couple of times a month due to their Mom’s work schedule. Losing him has been a blow. At the same time, we have been instrumental in getting hundreds of dogs adopted into fabulous homes. I’m so proud of the work we have done over the years. The overwhelming majority of the tears have been those of joy.

There are a myriad of factors that played into making this difficult decision, but at the end of the day it is in the best interest of my family. The relationships I have built with you are because you trust us. That will forever be a crowning jewel in my life. You love us because we love them, and there is nothing more pure than that. It is a bond we will always share and not one I will forget.

My plan is to talk with each of our friends personally about this change. We have a ton of friends so if you haven’t gotten a phone call yet, please know you are important to me. In the interim, don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns. I do have a very short list of referrals ready to go.

We have a new batch of abandoned dogs in the kennel. It’s 50/50. 1/2 abandoned by private owners, 1/2 by rescues. You guys have been helpful in the past finding rescues and adopters for these sweeties, discarded through no fault of their own. Can you please share or tag? We stay committed to helping every dog that comes into our lives, however keeping them for prolonged periods of time is not sustainable, nor is it good for them.

Need a Houston rescue story with a happy ending? Me too.

Team Monty, captained by his adopter in Anchorage, AK fell in love with a Houston throw away that had landed himself at BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions. BARC and Last Minute Dog Rescue collaborated to get him to us at Second Family Pet Service where we worked hard to get him rehabilitated, emotionally and physically. Niki Korda was there every step of the way.

Robert Fisher and Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic meticulously oversaw his recovery. No one has ever cared for a dog more thoughtfully.

His adopter waited patiently until Becky Best heroically joined the team to pick up the last leg of his relay and saw him through to Alaska.

Monty IS our mission at Second Family. It is through the care, coordination and professionalism of all the afore mentioned saints that allowed us to see this vision through to its end.

You have heard horror stories galore about the mismanagement of dogs that involve rescues, vets, boarding facilities, shelters and adopters. Today, revel in the fact that one unlikely fellow, Monty, did hit the lottery. And we all delivered for his sake alone.

Beryl update:

We are peering out our windows watching as Beryl passes over. We haven’t sustained any wind damage or flooding. The dogs are all remarkably quiet, tucked safely away in their buildings. We haven’t lost power.

Please know that we have stand by generators, food and water for 10 days and all of our buildings are 10 feet above sea level. In the 100+ years we have been on this property we have never had to evacuate, though we do have an evacuation plan and remain humble.

As always, we deeply appreciate your confidence in us. We are well situated and prepared, however if there are circumstances that arise that pose safety concerns, you will immediately be notified by phone.

Charlie wanted me to let you know that whatever you have going in your life, he’s there for you. He’s rooting for you. He believes in you. That’s just the kind of guy he is.

Owners abandoning their dogs with us is common occurrence. They sign the boarding agreement, pay two weeks in advance, then never return, as is the case with Miss Shields here. She likes other dogs and even cats. Miss Shields is a perpetually happy, 6 yo lab. She’s spayed and HW negative and she has racked up a little over $5K in boarding bills.

I just can’t send Miss Shields to the shelter. I can’t bear to think of what might happen to her, but that’s the only option boarding facilities have when dogs are abandoned with them. I’ve been working on getting her adopted, and I was able to get her sister, Remi, adopted (also $5K in boarding) just recently.

If you are a rescue, or know of a rescue that may be able to help Miss Shields find a happy home, please tag or share. If you are able to help her out by buying her one more day with us, that would be great too. We love her, she is a delightful girl. I can’t imagine a day where I had to load her up into an animal control truck, but options are pretty limited at this point.
