🚙Your car air freshener could be doing more harm to your dog (or cat) than you realize.💨☠️
Synthetic aromas🧪 contain chemicals which are inhaled and then enter the bloodstream.🧬 According to researchers, in a confined environment like a car, these compounds from air fresheners are even more harmful. In fact, the warning label on a popular car air freshener states “Do not keep pets in car without adequate ventilation.”⚠️🐶
This is because commercial car air fresheners use “fragrance oils” a mixture of various chemicals which manufacturers don’t have to disclose on the label.🙀 According to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), approximately 95 percent of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrance oils are derived from petroleum, including aldehydes, benzene derivatives and toluene…the same toxic chemicals found in toilet bowl cleaners, paint thinner, and insect repellents! These chemicals are known neurotoxins that have been linked to cancer, lung, liver, kidney, neurological, and central nervous system disorders.🧠
On top of that, in order to help the scent last longer, more than 75% of products with fragrances also contain phthalates. Health risks associated with phthalates include cancer, reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, respiratory problems, and more. The CDC reported that phthalates can be found in the blood of most Americans, with the greatest quantities found in women.👩🏻 And studies have shown the average level of these chemicals is often double that in pets. 🐶🐱
To avoid these chemicals getting in and on your pets, never use products that list “fragrance” on the label or ingredient list, this is common industry terminology that protects companies from having to disclose these ingredients.
👉If your goal is to remove damaging chemicals from your family’s environment, the first place to start is by unplugging plug-ins in the home AND car🏠🚗.
