We need your help in lifesaving treatment for Oscar and Gregory. Lifesaving heartworm treatment was just started for Oscar the Dachshund and Gregory the paraplegic wonder dog with Dr. Mulvey at Savannah Veterinary Medical Center. Unless treated, heartworm disease will kill a dog. Treatment is a three-month process; it’s complex, costly and carries risks. Completed treatment ultimately leads to eradication of the disease.

Heartworm disease is a severe but preventable condition that affects dogs from the bite of a mosquito. The parasitic worm, Dirofilaria immitis, is transmitted exclusively through mosquito bites. As the worms grow, they infiltrate the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels. Worms grow in length to up to 12 inches and as they grow, they eventually choke off the ability for the heart and lungs to work. Infected dogs may not show symptoms in the early stages, but as the disease progresses the ability to function normally diminishes until they die a horrible death.

Georgia ranks in the top ten states for heartworm infections. Why? Extended mosquito seasons due to long summers and climate change, low compliance with heartworm prevention and just plain laziness on the part of many dog owners. A monthly preventative available at your vet’s office can be purchased for about $10.00 a month. Unfortunately, the people who owned both Oscar and Gregory did not care enough to spend $10.00 and prevent this deadly disease. With the treatment just started through GRRR, both dogs will fully recover and go on to living normal lives and happy lives. Please help us with the costly lifesaving treatments just started with Oscar and Gregory. Visit: https://donorbox.org/save-oscar-and-gregory-s-lives to donate.

What is the answer? He lost two testicles, eight teeth and a nasty tumor on his chest.

Yesterday, Patches went on to the next stop of his rescue by GRRR and visited Dr. Serina Doolittle at Elite Veterinary Services. While there he had three surgeries at once, neuter, dental, tumor removal as well as updates to his immunizations, heartworm test and microchip.

Patches is a very special dog, sweeter than most and he received the much needed medical attention that had been missed in previous years before he came to GRRR Georgia Rescue.

We rescued seven year old Patches recently and one of the items that we are working on with him is weight loss. He is at least 20% over his ideal weight. A dog is generally considered overweight if it weighs 10-20% above its ideal body weight, and obese when it exceeds its ideal body weight by 20% or more

There are health risks associated with overweight dogs and cats:
🐶 Increased risk of joint problems: Excess weight puts stress on joints, potentially leading to osteoarthritis.
🐶 Heart disease: Obesity can contribute to heart problems.
🐶 Diabetes: Overweight dogs are at higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus.
🐶 Breathing difficulties: Excess weight can make it harder for dogs to breathe.
🐶 Reduced lifespan: Obesity can shorten a dog's life.

What should you do if you think your dog ot cat is overweight?
🐶 Talk to your veterinarian: A vet can assess your dog's weight and overall health and provide guidance on weight management.
🐶 Adjust their diet: Your vet may recommend a lower-calorie, higher-fiber food.
🐶 Increase their exercise: Gradually increase your dog's activity level with walks, playtime, or other forms of exercise.
🐶 Consider portion control and eliminate treats. Use a measuring cup to ensure you are feeding the correct amount of food at each meal

A successful and ideal weight for your dog or cat will only ensure a healthier pet with a longer lifespan.

14 year old Zora is living her best life ever thanks to GRRR Georgia Rescue. Two months ago a client at Eastside Veterinary Hospital dropped off a little dog for euthanasia and Dr. Marlay said NO! She was surrendered to GRRR and today she stopped by Eastside to say hello. If you ask us she looks like she’s living her best life ever as a forever foster with GRRR! Thank you Dr. Marlay and thank you to Maxx for becoming her loving foster parent.

GRRR’s Last Stop Loved Senior Dog Program saves senior dogs from euthanasia and neglect and allows them to live out their lives in a happy and loving environment.

Our Story

Founded in 2011, GRRR is a small 501(c)(3) rescue organization that serves Savannah, Georgia and the surrounding counties. We are dedicated to rescuing small dogs under 30 lbs. in size from owners who are no longer able to care for them, from public shelters without a “no-kill” policy, and from situations where they have suffered abuse or neglect. We are committed to helping both the most needy and the more readily adoptable animals in our community. GRRR places a large emphasis on working with senior dogs who are overlooked by most people when they are adopting a dog. We have rescued many senior dogs, insuring that their last years are comfortable, loved and happy. All donations made are tax deductible, and every dollar goes directly to the care of our animals. All of our rescues are spayed or neutered, receive proper veterinary treatment, and are placed in loving foster homes while awaiting adoption.
