Reposting as it is that time of year:

** Leaving water on a horse is not harmful. And, if your goal is to keep the horse cool over a length of time, you *should* leave it on.

** Scraping may allow for quicker drying but it does not help cool the horse.

There have been multiple studies to support this. And, simply put: it is how evaporation works.

Linked article summary: the amount of evaporation is more of a factor in efficient cooling than the temperature of the water applied. Scraping will DECREASE the amount of evaporation and, hence, cooling.

If you have to cool the horse quickly, use a lot of cold water. If you want to keep the horse as cool as possible (in the barn/field/trailer), apply water of any reasonable temp and let it evaporate slowly (no scraping!).

And, finally, if the ambient "feels like" temperature is near or above the horse's body temp, blowing that uncooled air on the horse (adding fans at ambient temperature) will not have a cooling effect.

Applies to animals too.......

"The event is over but you continue to react to things as if you're in danger. So the big challenge of treating trauma is: how do we help people to live in bodies that feel fundamentally unsafe?"

Trauma is not limited to extreme events. And, often, the social and cultural gauge for distress is measured by how well a person (or animal) is able to function within that social and cultural construct.
And that ability has *nothing* to do with what degree of trauma exists or with that individual's ability to cope. "Normal" is simply a measurement of if the coping mechanisms are adequate to stay under the radar behaviorally. "Normal" does not mean there is no trauma.

Acclaimed psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, author of “The Body Keeps The Score,” discusses the widespread existence of trauma and how it manifests in our bo...
