The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends taking every SAFE opportunity to expose puppies to different experiences during their critical socialization period (8-16 weeks). 🐾

During this time, puppies’ brains are most receptive to new sights, sounds, and interactions. Early socialization helps prevent fearful and aggressive behavior later in life, acting as a "vaccination" against future behavioral issues! 💪

At LOMA Dog Training, our certified puppy trainers start socializing puppies as early as 8 weeks in a safe, sanitized environment to minimize illness risk. This foundation helps your puppy grow into a confident, well-adjusted dog. 🏠✨

Start socializing early for a calm, well-rounded pup! 🌟

Happy Howlidays!

The holiday season can be just as stressful for your pet as it is for yourself.

Here is a collection of safety tips in order to help your pets have a good holiday season.

1. Create a safe place for your dog to escape to should they become overwhelmed. Even if your dog is comfortable with guests, there may be times when you want them to be comfortable in their own space. You want to create this space ahead of time, and make it fun with things like frozen kongs or puzzle toys to create a positive association with the area.

Check out this video on how to create a "Zen-Den": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFnOHP2qD9o

2. Assigning one adult to supervise each dog can help make sure your pets are not becoming overwhelmed with your guests. When they are noticing your dogs signs of stress or over arousal, they can then move them into their safe space to take a break.

3. Try not to let children hug or kiss the dogs. Kids are not going to be able to easily recognize signs of stress in dogs. Even if your dog is normally great with children, they may feel overwhelmed or over excited by the amount of guests during something like a holiday party. Preventing this will help prevent any unexpected incidents to occur.

4. Don't let the children follow the dog if the dog is choosing to disengage. Sometimes, the dog may just need a break from all the love, and a child may not recognize this. The dog will come back when they are ready, and we do not want to unknowingly put them in a situation that may make them uncomfortable.

With Thanksgiving on the way, it's important to have a management plan in place for your pup. A great way to do this is to pre-prep high-value puzzle toys for your pups to enjoy. If you feel like creating a safe dish for your pet, mix all these ingredients together in a bowl, put it in a Kong Classic or West Paw Toppl, and freeze.

🐶Recipe #1: The "Basic"
Dry dog food, Wet dog food, Peanut Butter

🐶Recipe #2: Stuffed for Sensitive Stomachs
Rice Boiled, de-boned chicken, Pumpkin (pure pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling)

🐶Recipe #3: Pumpkin Pie Stuffed
Pumpkin, Peanut Butter, Smashed Banana

🐶Recipe #4: Post-Feast Dessert Stuffed
Smashed banana, Peanut butter, Dog treats or dry dog food, Honey, Plain Greek yogurt

All the delicious smells may be very tempting for most dogs, and while it is possible to give your pup some of the holiday spoils, it's important to remember that there are certain foods they should NOT eat.

Let’s look at what Thanksgiving foods are safe for your dog — and which foods you should absolutely avoid.

What your dog CAN eat:
✅Unseasoned white turkey meat without skin, fat or bones.
✅Unseasoned potatoes.
✅Plain green beans.
✅Small amount of canned pumpkin.

What you should AVOID feeding your dog:
❌Stuffing ➡️This dish can contain toxic ingredients such as onions, leeks, garlic, raisins, and various spices.
❌Turkey with skin and seasoning ➡️ It can cause gastrointestinal upset and pancreatitis.
❌Cranberry sauce ➡️The sugar content is too high.
❌Pumpkin pie ➡️ A safer option is to prepare a small amount of cooked or canned plain pumpkin puree, but be warned: the fiber content in pumpkin and potatoes can increase your pet's need to go potty.
❌Anything containing Xylitol (also known as Birch Sugar) ➡️ Sugar substitutes are highly toxic to your pet.

This weekend our trainer, Jennifer, was able to attended a conference presented by IntroVet on managing behavior issues in pets.

Jennifer learned the importance of working with a veterinarian to assess pain in pets because pain can influence behavior problems.

Our long-standing recommendation of supplementing a behavior modification plan with behavioral medications was also confirmed by the presenters. They emphasized that medication alone cannot solve behavior problems so veterinarians and professional trainers work together to give pets the best up-to-date options for resolving behavior challenges.

As professional trainers who adhere to the highest standards for pet trainers, we emphasize the importance of our trainers seeking ongoing education from reputable sources. We want all our staff to stay current about the best practices for helping clients while doing no harm.

This year, one of our our behaviorists, Dr. Megan Hoffman, was able to speak to the team at GoodRX about Canine Cognition and how dogs think.

Dr. Hoffman earned her Ph.D. in Psychology from Georgia State University in 2012. Her area of concentration is comparative psychology - the study of behavioral and cognitive processes across species.

Dr. Hoffman is a member of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) unites Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians, PhD’s, and Research Professionals who share an interest in both understanding animal behavior and treating behavior problems that affect the welfare of animals and the people who care for them.

Dogs have simpler cognitive skills than humans, but they still have a lot to think about. Instincts, emotions, and more contribute to their thoughts.

Happy Halloween!

Stay safe out there, and remember to pay your dogs for all the spooky activities!

Don't think your dog can handle all the festivities? Make sure if you aren't handing out candy to keep your porch light off. If you are, make sure your dog is contained in a safe area!

In preparation for this week's Halloween festivities, we would like to once again share the ways to reduce anxiety for your pets on this holiday.

🎃Comfy Costumes - Not all pets want to dress up for the holidays, and that's okay! Please do not force your pet to wear a costume. If they're uncomfortable, maybe opt for Halloween-themed collars or bandanas instead!

🎃Ditch the Doorbell - There is a lot of commotion at your front door on Halloween night. If your pup is fearful or reactive to people coming up to your door or ringing your doorbell, try to avoid letting people make it up to the doorbell. Instead, try sitting out in your driveway to hand out candy, or use motion-sensored decor to alert you of arrivals. If you don't plan on handing out candy, remember to turn off your porch light!

🎃Trunk & Treat - See if your community is running a trunk and treat event near you. Here you can experience all the fun of Halloween without adding any stress to your pets.

🎃Staycation - Make sure to have a safe area to contain your pets if they are less social. If having guests is stressful for them, try to have them in this area with lots of treats and toys about an hour before trick or treating begins.

🎃Sights & Sounds - Pets may become stressed by the flow of doorbells and knocking. They could even become stressed by the spooky decor and costumes. Keep treats handy so that we can create fun experiences for what could otherwise be a scary holiday.

If during this holiday you notice that your dog is more fearful than you had anticipated, please reach out to schedule an assessment with one of our trainers!

We specialize in solving behavior challenges through positive reinforcement, no electronic or prong collars needed!

Freddie was a pandemic puppy who originally started puppy training in 2020.

He has now shown some generalized anxiety and his owner wanted to see if we could help him overcome some of his fears like the vacuum cleaner and unfamiliar objects.

He is still working on befriending the vacuum but is doing great at walks in public, and slowly getting more confident.

Is your dog afraid of new things? Call LOMA to get an assessment and training help.

Halloween is right around the corner! You may have noticed lots of interesting decor showing up in your neighborhood in preparation for this spooky holiday. But if these decorations are meant to spook even us humans (who are aware of them being fake), imagine how it could make a dog feel!

So if your dog has been showing any sort of discomfort with the seasonal decor, here are a couple tips to help them in your neighborhood:

🎃If you are taking your dog on a walk, take some high-value treats. As soon as your pup shows interest in any lawn decorations, reward them. The more you do this, the more positive feelings they will develop about that situation.

👻If you know a particular home has decorations that frighten your dog, try taking a different route on your walk. Avoiding that house completely can avoid causing unnecessary stress to your four-legged friend.

Astro is a unique client as they came to us from McAllen, Texas where his owner couldn't find a positive reinforcement trainer locally.

Luckily she found LOMA and we were able to help them 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 via Zoom!

Astro is a trained therapy dog who visits different locations to provide comfort and companionship to people who could use it, however, he started chasing cats while out on walks. Being 90lbs this was a problem for his petite owner!

Using strictly positive training techniques, we were able to not only curb Astro's habit of cat chasing, but he was also able to learn some new tricks to have fun with his therapy clients like how to spin, crawl, and high-five.

Let LOMA help you and your pet in person or online!

Treat. Train. Transform.

Get peace of mind with our qualified, experienced dog behavior professionals.

LOMA Behavior and Training was started by Dr. Lorraine Martinez, a psychologist, who had a dog with aggressive behavior. When she learned there were no licensing, education or experience requirements to work as a dog behavior professional and many in the field misused or misunderstood the principles of psychology, she found found a way to merge her passion for behavior and her love of animals. Now, LOMA Behavior and Training gives you confidence about your training choice. We are different from most companies in San Antonio because ALL our trainers are required to pursue certification through the most reputable organizations: the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), the Karen Pryor Academy, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and Fear Free Pets. You can be assured that our trainers are held to the highest ethical and behavioral standards in the industry and adhere to our internal standards for professionalism.

Our trainers travel to your home in the San Antonio metro area giving you relief about how to keep your fearful dog from escaping, or prevent your dog that has been growling from biting someone, or make sure your puppy receives the best socialization foundation for a life long companion.
