Did you know? The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends starting puppy socialization before completing their full set of vaccinations!

Why? 🐶 Early socialization during the critical developmental period (3–14 weeks) is essential for building a puppy’s confidence and reducing the risk of behavioral issues like fear and reactivity later in life.

Of course, safety matters! AVSAB advises controlled, low-risk environments like puppy classes, supervised playdates, and exposure to new people, sounds, and surfaces.

Setting your puppy up for a lifetime of success starts with positive, safe early experiences. 🌟 Ready to get started? Comment "puppy training" to learn more about our effective and humane training methods designed to set your puppy up for success.

Understanding your dog's body language is essential for identifying fear and ensuring their well-being. Here are key signs to watch for:

Tucked Tail: A tail held tightly between the hind legs indicates fear or anxiety.
Flattened Ears: Ears pinned back against the head suggest fear or submission.
Crouching or Lowered Body: A dog attempting to make itself appear smaller is often fearful.
Facial Expressions
Avoiding Eye Contact: Turning the head away or avoiding direct eye contact is a sign of fear.

Dogs, like us, have fears, but their triggers and experiences can differ. 🐾 Fear in dogs is a natural response, often tied to instinct or past experiences. A loud noise, like a thunderstorm, can send a dog into a state of panic, while another might be frightened of certain people, other animals, or even specific situations. These fears often stem from their environment, genetics, or early life experiences.

For instance, a puppy who wasn't properly socialized might grow up wary of new situations, leading to fearful behaviors like hiding or escaping. On the other hand, a dog that has faced trauma or an abrupt, unpleasant experience may develop long-lasting fears. The good news? Fear can be managed and treated with patience, understanding, and consistent training.

Understanding why dogs have fears is key to helping them overcome them. By identifying triggers, providing a safe space, and using positive reinforcement, we can guide them through their anxieties and build their confidence over time. Are you ready to help your dog become more confident and secure with their fears? We're here to support. Comment "consult" to get started!

Today, as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let’s reflect on his message of compassion, equality, and justice — values that resonate deeply in our work with animals.

Dr. King’s vision reminds us that all beings deserve respect, understanding, and kindness. In animal behavior, we strive to listen, empathize, and guide without force, creating a better world for both people and animals. 🐾

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Let’s honor his legacy by making the world a better place, one connection at a time.

🐾 Keep your dog contained or separated from guests using baby gates, crates, or a quiet room where they feel comfortable.
🐾 Remind your guests not to feed your dog—too many treats can upset their stomach and add stress.
🐾 Share clear instructions with guests on how to interact with your dog to prevent overwhelming them.

These simple steps will help your dog enjoy a calm and peaceful holiday season!

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends taking every SAFE opportunity to expose puppies to different experiences during their critical socialization period (8-16 weeks). 🐾

During this time, puppies’ brains are most receptive to new sights, sounds, and interactions. Early socialization helps prevent fearful and aggressive behavior later in life, acting as a "vaccination" against future behavioral issues! 💪

At LOMA Dog Training, our certified puppy trainers start socializing puppies as early as 8 weeks in a safe, sanitized environment to minimize illness risk. This foundation helps your puppy grow into a confident, well-adjusted dog. 🏠✨

Start socializing early for a calm, well-rounded pup! 🌟

Happy Howlidays!

The holiday season can be just as stressful for your pet as it is for yourself.

Here is a collection of safety tips in order to help your pets have a good holiday season.

1. Create a safe place for your dog to escape to should they become overwhelmed. Even if your dog is comfortable with guests, there may be times when you want them to be comfortable in their own space. You want to create this space ahead of time, and make it fun with things like frozen kongs or puzzle toys to create a positive association with the area.

Check out this video on how to create a "Zen-Den": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFnOHP2qD9o

2. Assigning one adult to supervise each dog can help make sure your pets are not becoming overwhelmed with your guests. When they are noticing your dogs signs of stress or over arousal, they can then move them into their safe space to take a break.

3. Try not to let children hug or kiss the dogs. Kids are not going to be able to easily recognize signs of stress in dogs. Even if your dog is normally great with children, they may feel overwhelmed or over excited by the amount of guests during something like a holiday party. Preventing this will help prevent any unexpected incidents to occur.

4. Don't let the children follow the dog if the dog is choosing to disengage. Sometimes, the dog may just need a break from all the love, and a child may not recognize this. The dog will come back when they are ready, and we do not want to unknowingly put them in a situation that may make them uncomfortable.

With Thanksgiving on the way, it's important to have a management plan in place for your pup. A great way to do this is to pre-prep high-value puzzle toys for your pups to enjoy. If you feel like creating a safe dish for your pet, mix all these ingredients together in a bowl, put it in a Kong Classic or West Paw Toppl, and freeze.

🐶Recipe #1: The "Basic"
Dry dog food, Wet dog food, Peanut Butter

🐶Recipe #2: Stuffed for Sensitive Stomachs
Rice Boiled, de-boned chicken, Pumpkin (pure pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling)

🐶Recipe #3: Pumpkin Pie Stuffed
Pumpkin, Peanut Butter, Smashed Banana

🐶Recipe #4: Post-Feast Dessert Stuffed
Smashed banana, Peanut butter, Dog treats or dry dog food, Honey, Plain Greek yogurt

All the delicious smells may be very tempting for most dogs, and while it is possible to give your pup some of the holiday spoils, it's important to remember that there are certain foods they should NOT eat.

Let’s look at what Thanksgiving foods are safe for your dog — and which foods you should absolutely avoid.

What your dog CAN eat:
✅Unseasoned white turkey meat without skin, fat or bones.
✅Unseasoned potatoes.
✅Plain green beans.
✅Small amount of canned pumpkin.

What you should AVOID feeding your dog:
❌Stuffing ➡️This dish can contain toxic ingredients such as onions, leeks, garlic, raisins, and various spices.
❌Turkey with skin and seasoning ➡️ It can cause gastrointestinal upset and pancreatitis.
❌Cranberry sauce ➡️The sugar content is too high.
❌Pumpkin pie ➡️ A safer option is to prepare a small amount of cooked or canned plain pumpkin puree, but be warned: the fiber content in pumpkin and potatoes can increase your pet's need to go potty.
❌Anything containing Xylitol (also known as Birch Sugar) ➡️ Sugar substitutes are highly toxic to your pet.

Treat. Train. Transform.

Get peace of mind with our qualified, experienced dog behavior professionals.

LOMA Behavior and Training was started by Dr. Lorraine Martinez, a psychologist, who had a dog with aggressive behavior. When she learned there were no licensing, education or experience requirements to work as a dog behavior professional and many in the field misused or misunderstood the principles of psychology, she found found a way to merge her passion for behavior and her love of animals. Now, LOMA Behavior and Training gives you confidence about your training choice. We are different from most companies in San Antonio because ALL our trainers are required to pursue certification through the most reputable organizations: the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), the Karen Pryor Academy, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and Fear Free Pets. You can be assured that our trainers are held to the highest ethical and behavioral standards in the industry and adhere to our internal standards for professionalism.

Our trainers travel to your home in the San Antonio metro area giving you relief about how to keep your fearful dog from escaping, or prevent your dog that has been growling from biting someone, or make sure your puppy receives the best socialization foundation for a life long companion.
