Cats are incredible predators but they're small enough that they're also prey. As prey, the last thing cats want is for a larger predator to have access to their most vulnerable area where vital organs are located. The typical response for cats who have their stomach touched, is to spring into defensive mode. Your cat may grab your hands with their paws (if you’re unlucky, those claws will also be extended and ready for defense) and then maybe even bite. Your cat isn’t being mean to you – it’s a natural protection reflex.
There are some cats who do enjoy a belly rub, especially if you've conditioned your cat to that touch early on in kittenhood. Always pay attention to your cat's body language and respect those petting location preferences.
