In the know with Scout’s Legacy Service Dogs.
What is a Service Dog? According to the ADA a Service Dog is a dog who mitigates their handlers disability by performing certain trained tasks. Their high level of training sets them apart from other dogs, such as Emotional Support Dogs and Therapy Dogs. It is also what grants them Public Access rights under state and federal law, allowing disabled handlers to have their SD accompany them as they go about their daily lives.
How can I tell if a dog is a Service Dog? By the dog’s behavior only! According to the ADA a Service Dog does not need to be vested or marked. Keep in mind that disabilities can be invisible, so a SD handler may look perfectly fine on the outside. So long as the dog is not disruptive, assume it’s a Service Dog and let them be. And now you know!

Video description: a short video of a SD handler and their dog on a grassy field on a sunny day. The handler is standing and casually looking around, the dog (a black poodle) is sitting. All of a sudden the camera falls over. The text reads as follows when the handler is looking around: Me, living my best disabled life. When the camera starts falling: My disability:....
Ever wonder why trainers keep drilling basic skills? It’s because more complex behaviors are comprised of a bunch of those basic skills! The better you train that foundation, the better your advanced training will go.

Video description: A man walks a Service Dog in Training down the aisle of a hardware store during a training outing. Other handlers line both sides of the aisle. Although the action seems effortless, text pops up on screen informing the viewer that the basic skills of turning with the handler, loose leash walking, checking in with the handler, and ignoring distractions are being used. At the end of the video confetti flies across the screen, in celebration of the dog being a good boy.

Just because Leevi isn't a Service Dog doesn't mean he can't help, okaaaay.
Bonus points to Carly for trying to task. ❤️

Video description: POV: you're a Service Dog Trainer, training a medical alert. The trainer fakes falling on the floor so the golden retriever she's training will perform it's task. However, a Pyrenean Mastiff weighing 135 lbs pushes the golden out of the way to lay on top of her instead
While playing pass the puppy, trainer Amanda was working with Burrito on some of his commands he knows and making it fun! His handler is the one recording the video ❤️ we all enjoy seeing our dogs love their job 😍🥰 #scoutslegacyservicedogs #scoutslegacy #slsdburrito #doodle #servicedogintraining #dogtraining
Service Dogs often encounter edible and non edible temptations as they go about their job. Learning how to ignore these temptations is a very important part of the curriculum!

Video description: Three dogs are in a down stay on the floor of a store. Their trainer is throwing treats in front of them, which all three dogs are ignoring.
One of the hardest things our dogs work on is ignoring people so they can focus on their handler and not miss any alerts. We think Baylor has got this part down pat!

Video description: A brown lab in SD gear is laying down on the floor of a store. A person is running around him making noises, and jumping over him. Suddenly the video turns black and white and freezes, zooming in on the dog's bored expression. The text reads: When you're hard at work learning to ignore human shenanigans, and all of a sudden you're rethinking your career choices. Thank you for tuning in, this has been existential thoughts with Baylor.
