Black Cat Appreciation Day was established in 2011 by Wayne H. Morris in memory of his sister and Sinbad, a 20-year-old black cat. That year, both Sinbad and his sister passed away. Morris created this holiday to debunk common misconceptions about black cats. Since 2011, the celebration has grown tremendously.

Unfortunately, many individuals still avoid adopting black cats due to lingering superstitions. That's why Black Cat Appreciation Day is so important. This national event helps us honor and raise awareness for these beautiful house panthers.

Consider adopting a black cat or volunteering at your local shelter. Overcome any fears and share your growing affection for black kitties on social media with the hashtag .

"I've tried plush and cushy beds, cat towers with a little cave, cat houses.... absolutely everything you could think of and I spent a ton of money too. I wound up giving EVERYTHING away. I was unpacking a box one day and put to the side. Willie (my baby), stepped in it. It was too small for him but he loved it. He was ALWAYS in there. So I googled "Square Cat Beds" and this came up on Amazon. I took a couple of his toys and rubbed them inside and around to get his scent in there. This is where he lives now. Did you know that black cats' fur can change color due to UV rays? ☀️

Exposure to sunlight can break down the eumelanin pigment in their fur, causing it to turn a rusty brown color. However, this change is temporary, and the affected fur will return to its original black once it is shed.

Sphynx cats, like other purebreds, are prone to genetic health issues, with their lack of fur – usually offering protection, temperature regulation, and communication – being a point of breeding controversy.

Known for their energetic and intelligent demeanor, they share common feline conditions but are particularly vulnerable to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). This disease, characterized by an abnormal thickening of the heart muscle, can lead to heart failure and typically does not manifest until adulthood, despite the genetic mutation being present from birth. The onset age of HCM in Sphynx cats varies, with many showing signs between 2-3 years of age, while others may develop it later in life, around 8-10 years old. Therefore, regular veterinary examinations are essential for early detection and management of this condition.
