Let’s head to a @kuleanacoral event! 🪸
We learned about the next step in Kuleana Coral’s restoration process and were even able to help prepare corals for re-planting.
First, Corals of Opportunity are cut into smaller pieces called fragments. Fragmentation is a way to increase growth rates and plant more coral across wider areas.
These coral fragments are attached to plugs made from aragonite. Aragonite is a form of calcium carbonate that makes up coral skeletons.
I thought it was so cool to use a material that makes up coral skeletons for re-planting!
Kuleana Coral, in partnership with @shebabrandus and @shebahopegrows, will adhere these coral fragments onto degraded sections of reef to grow into strong and healthy corals.
