Pet Food Distribution!
We strive to provide services that promote animal welfare and compassionate animal care. By providing services that improve animal health and maintain a responsible pet population in San Miguel county, we continue to be their voice. They deserve all of that and more.
AWC Pet Center foster dog, COLOGNE, loves going on car rides and was so sad to see the smoke plume. He is sending big love to everyone effected by these fires and those working to get them contained.
A few words on our current situation from AWC Pet Center staff behaviorist and trainer, Bea Gallegos.
The AWC Pet Center continues to grow and add additional resources to our shelter services to better serve the animals in our care. We have waited so long for this day and our staff are seriously jumping for joy!
Thank you to many people and organizations who made this possible:
- Funding to purchase the washer and dryer was provided by the LAS VEGAS ROTARY CLUB, THE LAS VEGAS VEGABONDS, and a private foundation.
- Preparing the room was all VOLUNTEER POWER!
- The City of Las Vegas is installing the necessary electic and plumbing.
- A&B Laundry has done the install and provided amazing support.
- Jeffrey's Plumbing And Heating Inc. provided the plumbing install.
Thank you from the staff of the AWC Pet Center!
Animal shelter workers tend to be an out-of-sight, out-of-mind group of essential workers. While animal control services are generally out in the community, the shelter staff cleaning kennels, administering medications, performing behavior evaluations, following up on adoptions and fosters, and doing countless other tasks for lost, homeless, scared, and often sick or injured animals is behind-the-scenes work. This incredible tribute to the staff of the AWC Pet Center is a true honor from these well-respected national leaders in animal welfare.

Look at TESHAWN go!
Cold, blustery days at the AWC Pet Center mean snow zoomies!
AWC alum, ARTHUR, is super happy that he has a home for the holidays. He is also super bummed he can't go roughouse with his big dog brother, BEAU. In solidarity, his big human brother, Nakai, is playing the "just got neutered, gotta wear a cone" blues.
We are being hit hard with neo-nate kittens!!!! If you are interested in becoming a foster for these special need little ones, please contact 505-426-3289.
When you discover kittens outdoors, it can be tempting to scoop them up and bring them indoors. However, it is important to know that this is almost never in a kitten’s best interest. No matter how hard we fight for them, their chances simply aren't as good when taken away from mom.
We need community help to address this problem:
- Spaying and neutering your cats is the best way to help end un-wanted litters.
- Fostering enables us to take in animals in need.
- Donating helps us provide the necessary supplies.
It takes a village!
Lil' RILEIGH thinks she's just playing! Little does she know, her big sister is teaching her how to dog!
ARIANA, BECK, and HANSEN came into the AWC Pet Center classified as feral dogs. Feral dogs have had little to no interaction with humans for the majority of their life, especially during the critical puppy development phases. One of the main characteristics of a feral dog is an extreme fear of humans. Feral dogs can come from abuse and neglect situations. Dogs that are abused or neglected don’t have the opportunity to have positive interactions with humans. It requires a great deal of work to rehab a feral dog but it can still be done. All that is needed are people who want to put in the time and effort to help these dogs. The amount of time to rehabilitate a feral dog into a domestic dog varies depending on the dog and the situation that it comes from.
Our behaviorist, Bea, developed a plan to help these wild juveniles become normal, happy, adoptable dogs and the work began. It took a few months but Bea and the AWC Pet Center staff made amazing progress! All three of these kiddos have since been adopted into loving homes. You can see ARIANA in this video doing a great sit for Heather!
You may feel like your own dogs are feral but not to worry! Give Bea a call at The Big Picture CAS for help!
