Happiness is when someone draws your chickens.

My jaw dropped to the floor when the mail arrived last weekend. For some background, this past year I was able to work on a new project at the museum called the Art Acknowledgement of Land. Every two years, the museum will hire an indigenous artist to create a visual land acknowledgement for the museum’s public spaces. I hope it serves as a reminder to all that wherever you stand, you are on Indigenous land. The installation launched with one of my favorite artists, Steph Littlebird, and it was one of the most amazing projects I have worked on. The kind of project that reminds you why you work at a museum. If you don’t know Steph’s work, you should. She calls out pop culture for their blatant disrespect of Native people and historical inaccuracies with frank honesty and humor. Her work is rooted in love of people and planet. She is smart, savvy, and uses so many exclamation points!!! She is an activist. She is a badass. She is my friend. I can’t believe she drew my chickens.

Meet Birch. She was the last surviving member of our friend’s flock and has come to retire at FusterCluck. She is a silver laced Wyandotte who is very chatty. She’s been with us for a while in quarantine and listening to her new flock mates through windows. It can be challenging adding a solo hen to an established flock but I’m confident that we can do it with time and treats. As you can tell from our selfies, she is already fitting in.

Morning traffic on a snow day was off to the races until the scary white stuff came into view.

It’s the Usual Suspects for tuck-in time.

The best part of today’s morning traffic is the loud kerthump Gladys makes when she jumps down from the roost. She is one chonky girl!

Monday morning traffic is a little bit hustle, not so much bustle, and a lovely little Birch joins in for her first turn on the chickenwalk.

Saturday morning traffic is slightly chaotic for a weekend so girls must know I have to work today.

Moment of Hen: I highly recommend cleaning out your garden beds to make a big pile for the hens and then watch them dig. Garden meditation at it’s fluffiest.

Morning traffic is a mix of hustle and bustle sprinkled with some hens that just aren’t ready to start the day. It is Wednesday everyone, halfway to the weekend!
