We share our home with a sweet angel Maltese JAZZ--the newly elected MAYOR of ATLANTA from DOGTV and Spokes Dog for Shore Dreams Vacation Rentals, and our spunky rescue Yorkie--Sophie Rose. They are quite a pair and we love the different personalities they bring to our lives. JAZZ and Sophie share their pet-adventuress at: www.facebook.com/ShoreDreamsPetAdventures. You can also catch JAZZ and Sophie in FIDO Friendly magazine.

Saw a lady today with a Maltese that looked exactly like JAZZ-First dog Mayor of Atlanta and a Yorkie that looked exactly like Sophie Rose. I got very teary-eyed and they just loved on me while I kept saying, “I’ve missed you too!” Boy, how I miss them…

What a LUV bug!

This is Puzzle. He was found roaming on the streets of a tiny Northern California town, severely matted and it affected some of his limbs. We are checking to see if it is permanent. He is safe and sound with us, but he needs a dental and other medical. He is estimated to be about 10 years old, weighs about 7 1/2 lbs., and seems to be deaf. He is being fostered in the Turlock, CA area. He will get showered with love and care. Then we'll look for a forever home for him. Please welcome Puzzle, just in time for the Holidays.

Can you give Hank a home?

HANK (TENNESSEE)
Hank is a sweet boy weighing 13 pounds. He is approximately 5-6 years old and being fostered in Murfreesboro, TN.
Hank is ready for adoption. He was neutered and had a dental cleaning on 12/07/2022. During the dental cleaning the veterinarian determined that Hank was about 5-6 years old and had three small extractions.
Hank has been doing well and we continue to work on his potty training and now that he has been neutered, we should see improvement.
Those interested in adopting Hank, you must complete an adoption application. There is a link to it on our home page www.uyr.org . If you need any information, please email Hanks’s foster dad at [email protected].

There is NO SUCH THING as a "teacup" Yorkie or Maltese! Yes, some are smaller than others, but educate yourself on the breed standard and realize that the smaller they are, the more susceptible they are to health problems. Anyone selling "teacups" should be considered a scam artist and NOT a reputable breeder. ALWAYS ask to see the parents too. AVOID ANYONE who won't let you--chances are, the puppies are from a puppy mill. It is OUR responsibility to help stop these breeding practices. If we don't buy, they can't sell.

BILLY BOB (IOWA)
Meet Billy Bob, a precious 7 month old, 9 pound Yorkie boy being fostered near Des Moines, IA.
Billy Bob is a 7 month old, larger sized Yorkie. This 10lb ball of love enjoys being around people and is a cuddly bear. He adores well behaved children, and would do well in a family setting with kids 10+ years or older with a stay at home-at-home/work-from-home Mom. Billy Bob does well with other dogs as long as they are gentle and playful. A younger dog with similar size and energy would be a great fit!
He'd also would be a perfect fit for an active retired couple that enjoys taking walks.
We learned from Billy Bob's former owner that he loves going camping, and even has his own camping sleeping bag!
Billy Bob's foster family is working with him on housetraining. Current methods include frequent trips outside in a fenced back yard, taking walks to get outside, explore and get exercise, belly bands, and crates while home alone during short durations and at bed time.
Bill Bob will require a physical, secure fenced yard - no wireless fences will be permitted.
He also does not like to be alone by himself for very long periods of time - 1-2 hours would be ok.
The vet has given Billy Bob a clean bill of health and he's fully up to date on vaccines. He is adoption ready after his neutering procedure next week.
The adopter will need to continue to work with Billy Bob on housetraining and basic training. Lots of patience will be required, however foster mom says he's very bright and has lots of potential. Any questions, please email foster mom at [email protected]

Looking for furever home—could that be you?

PITTSBURGH, PA......Back in mid April I took in a little male Maltese, just 7 years old that had a rough start in life and for those 7 years Fluffy did not have a good life and then was dumped at the shelter. He wasn't happy here as he was not used to all these dogs in my home but luckily a new couple applied to be fosters and since they had no dogs, I sent him to them. Now known as Martin, he is thriving and loving life. He has made amazing strides and is doing well in his Bashful Buddies class. He just got groomed so here are before and after pics. He just LOVES going for walks, rides in the car and is totally housebroken. It will be a little while till he's ready for his new home but if you are interested, please put your app in at www.AmericanMalteseRescue.org

The nose knows!

We see a lot of parents pulling on their dogs’ leashes while their dogs are trying to sniff. The info below is really helpful in explaining why sniffing is so important to our pups.

Let your dog be a dog…and let them sniff!

What a sweetheart—could she be your new family member?

JERSEY LEE (KENTUCKY)
Jersey Lee is a 11 year old 12lb girl being fostered near Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Jersey Lee is a super sweet girl. She loves to have undivided attention, and she loves to watch you eat, hoping either you drop food or she figures out how she can sn**ch food She is such a doll. She has the cutest little bark. She gets along well with other dogs. She was a breeder release who was kept in outside Kennels most of her life.
Two weeks ago she was spayed. It was a good thing the UYR rescued Jersey Lee when they did. The vet discovered that she had a serious bacterial infection in her uterus; it could have been fatal if she was not treated when she was. She was on a hefty dose of medication to combat the infection. While she was under anesthesia, she had 9 teeth pulled. The tenth tooth just fell out of her mouth. The vet also discovered a benign tumor in her ni**le, which was removed. She has done amazingly well, given the seriousness of the infection and the medication. She went for a follow-up yesterday. All is healing well. Because she has had so much medication, she had a case of diarrhea, so she is on a different medication for 5 days. If you are interested in giving this sweetheart a loving home for the rest of her life please email Foster Parents at [email protected] or fill out an application for her at www.uyr.us.

Educate yourselves. I lost a Yorkie to GME brought on by vaccines. At the VERY least—spread out the vaccines—don’t give them all in one day. And insist on a 3-year rabies.

DOES YOUR PET REALLY NEED BOOSTERS EVERY YEAR? 💉

Spring means annual shots, and soon you’ll be getting that email or postcard📧 from your vet letting you know your dog or cat is due for their annual boosters.

We all want our pets protected from life threatening diseases, but did you know your pet may be carrying enough protection from their puppy and kitten shots to last a lifetime?! (Just like your childhood immunizations).

Your pets may not need to be “boosted” at all, and giving more shots to an already-immunized animal is not only a waste of money, but in worst case scenarios, may cause serious immune issues of all types.

In today’s Inside Scoop episode, immunologist and titer expert Dr. Laurie Larson will be joining us to discuss pet vaccinations and titers, including:

🔥Why it is important to measure antibody titers

🔥How often should you check titers

🔥Puppy and kitten vaccinations: when and what do they really need

Join Rodney Habib and Dr. Karen Becker today at 12pm ET for this Live discussion. Looking forward to seeing you in the comments! 🙌

Dr. Laurie Larson runs the Companion Animal Vaccines and Immuno Diagnostic Service Lab and Titer Service at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine and also teaches veterinary immunology.

Who can give Frankie a home?

FRANKIE (GEORGIA)
Frankie is a 9yr old 10lb yorkie being fostered near Suwanee, GA.
My foster Frankie was turned in to be euthanized. Fortunately he was saved by some extraordinary people and he has now part of the UYR family. He doesn't belong here. He belongs in a forever home that will appreciate him for the marvelous little guy he is. Frankie loves two things most of all. He loves sunshine and he loves people. Frankie has two issues, he is mostly blind and he has what appear to be occasional epileptic seizures. Frankie handles the sight impairment on his own using incredible common sense, his hearing and his sniffer. The seizures are controlled with an inexpensive medication twice a day. Frankie tells us whenever he needs anything. He let's us know when he has to go out to potty, when his food bowl is empty, when he's lost and when he needs to be picked up. He can be very communicative! If you pay attention he will never have an accident inside the house and if he does it's really not his fault. He can't really go for walks easily because he can't see (although he's happy to try). Frankie needs a fenced in area where he can explore and do his necessaries. He likes to sleep with his people and he will gently lick you awake or lightly whine in your face when he needs to go outside. Frankie handles carpeted stairs wonderfully for a mostly blind guy but a home without that kind of obstacle would be the best. Frankie has discovered toys! He loves his loofah dog and he wants you to be willing to play with him by holding one end of the toy and playing tug of war. He can't play fetch very well but he's willing to try. Please consider giving Frankie a forever home. He would love to be an only dog. He avoids other dogs and he ignores cats. He wants to be your constant companion but he is fine being left alone for a few hours and he will just lay in the sun in the same room with you when it is time for you to work in the computer but feel free to spoil him with a surplus of love and attention! Any questions please email foster mom at [email protected]

They aren’t called maligators for nothing. Do not get an animal because you saw it in a movie- PLEASE. The movie “Dog” with Channing Tatum is released tomorrow featuring a highly trained Belgian Malinois. We stand firm that most people should not own this type of breed and anyone interested should do an immense amount of research. This movie took THREE different Belgian Malinois and nine months of training for this movie. A highly trained Malinois is a work of art and can be amazing in the right hands- the right professional hands. We fear that we’ll see an influx of them in shelters soon and that will not go well for the breed. Due to the extreme amount of enrichment/exercise/training needed (think mini raptors), Belgian Malinois deteriorate very quickly in a shelter environment.
If you’ve made the decision to get a Belgian Malinois (and cleared your schedule for the next year of training), please remember that pure bred does not equal good breeding. Don’t help a backyard breeder line their pockets. Ethical Belgian Mal breeders won’t advertise on Facebook, road signs, or Craigslist. And they won’t sell their dogs to probably 90% of the population because not everyone is equipped to handle a dog like that.
