We are starting off July strong with Pet Travel Safety Day! 🚗

As many of you may know, taking your cat to the vet can be an unpleasant experience for everyone involved. Cats are extremely independently natured animals – and travelling to the vets can be extremely stressful for them 🐈🐾

To make things as easy and safe as possible, here are some tips and tricks:

🐱Carriers are key: Always make sure that your cat has a carrier that they are comfortable with before thinking about travelling. Do your research on the various types of cat carriers – and make sure to place some comfort items in there for them such as toys or blankets. You can also place a blanket around the outside of the carrier so your cat isn’t seeing anything that can potentially cause stress.

🐱Slow introductions: If possible, introduce your cat slowly to their carrier. Make sure it is in a space they feel relaxed in, and that they have the freedom to enter and exit their carrier when they want to.

🐱Getting used to a car: The previous advice on getting used to the carrier also applies for the car you are travelling in. You can do this by letting them explore the vehicle or taking a few short trips to reassure them that they are safe.

🐱Regular stops: In stressful situations, cats may hold their need to use the litter box. However, it is important to take regular breaks to allow your cat to stretch its legs and use the litter box. It can be useful to take their litter box with you if possible, so they have a bit of familiarity with their otherwise disrupted routine.

🐱Signs of motion sickness and stress: As previously mentioned, travelling can be extremely stressful and like many animals, cats can be prone to motion sickness. Symptoms such as drooling, panting, vomiting/diarrhea and increased meowing are key indicators. If you are concerned about your feline, please contact a trusted veterinarian immediately.

Now that we are in lily season, it is important to be wary of the danger they pose to our feline friends. For any of you who don’t know, some types of lilies are extremely toxic to cats! 🐱❗

Easter, Japanese and Tiger lilies along with many more are dangerous to our four-legged companions - not all of them are fatal however they can still make your cat ill!

When bringing flowers of any kind into your home, make sure to do thorough research to ensure that they won’t harm your feline. Cats can encounter them through ways such as pollen and dropped leaves as the flowers age 🐾

If you spot your cat experiencing vomiting, diarrhea or any concerns after coming into contact with lilies get in touch with your vet immediately 🐈📞
