I wrote a long post the other day to update everyone on Bear but it never posted so I’m trying again. Here’s a condensed version. Because Bear was fearful of us and terrified of leashes and wouldn’t take treats it was very difficult to make progress. He is definitely our toughest case.
All December I was in the hospital with my mom which really messed up Bear’s routine. Then we had some work done in the basement which meant everything downstairs was now upstairs throwing him off even more. You could tell Bear wants to do things but it was like he couldn’t get out of his own head. I found a mobile vet who came to our house (examined Bear in our bedroom, love the vet!) to see if he would be a candidate for low dose Prozac. I explained how many rescues we’ve had and this is the first time I considered it. When she met Bear she totally got it.
We gave him a few weeks for the pill to take effect and then worked on being in the family room with all the pups and bonding. Then we worked up to the long lead in the yard. And eventually a leash. This month we had our first pack walk! We have a ways to go, still very fearful, but Bear has made huge progress. Happy Memorial Day from our family to yours!
