Camp Basenji

Camp Basenji We are a rescue organization for basenjis and would love to have you join our efforts. Please like us and add us to your homepage. It's time to share.

We DNA test our rescued basenjis for Fanconi as part of preventative health care. There is a lot that needs to be fixed in this world. Here's a little bit of our efforts to fix a tiny part, helping basenjis that bring a smile to our faces every day - even when we're cleaning up their ... AGAIN. Our obsession is for the basenji breed, a unique and challenging cat-like mind in a relatively small, fa

lsely unassuming dog body. We have had many basenjis pass through our homes as fosters and have found creative ways to best help them both mentally and physically. There is new medical information so pertinent to basenjis - check out the latest in Fanconi on the link above. A challenging economy has taught us to seek cost-effective ways to help our four-legged friends. Before rehoming your basenji, please contact us to see if we can help you solve any issues that may split up your family. Basenjis end up in rescue for all kinds of reasons. Some families had circumstances change, so the b needs to find a new home where he'll fit in. Others have stories we'll never know and need a bit of help before they can move on to their forever home. We appreciate the efforts anyone makes to get a basenji into our rescue. We will do everything possible to give the basenji a great new life. Having started in Florida, we are a growing organization with volunteers all over the US. We are still growing and welcome volunteers to join us. We also encourage volunteers to consider volunteering with other rescue organizations. Volunteering locally provides Camp Basenji volunteers an opportunity to share basenji information locally and be there to assist any basenjis that may show up in a local shelter. We have received our non-profit 501c3 status letter.

Meet Nitro, a 6-month-old male Basenji/Decker terrier puppy! He is currently fostered in Kingston Ontario (Canada)

He’s about 22 lbs, neutered and fully vaxxed. He’s also *extremely* sweet and affectionate, and prefers cuddling on the sofa to almost everything—except food! He loves other dogs and has puppy energy to burn, but is smart and easily redirected to chew toys or games. He’s quickly learning to sit and behave for treats, and is on a potty schedule. He’s had only one accident in the house and kept his crate clean during his transport north.

The ideal home for him would be with semi-experienced dog parents, and he’d love a playful dog sibling. One pet parent who works from home would be best unless he has a dog sibling. He is still at the energetic, somewhat mouthy puppy stage so he might knock over or chase young children or cats who aren’t dog-wise. While he hasn’t barked yet, he is apparently capable of barking, so an apartment might not be the best choice for him.

His foster mom is open to transporting him halfway (within reason) to meet the right family—Fill out an application so we can discuss.

PSA: EMERGENCY VETTING -
Know before you go!!!

Cute pic to catch your attention.

We are all becoming too familiar with certain changes in the vetting industry like increasing costs, but some folks may notice changes in how vetting facilities are operating. What I’m about to share may only apply to our area, but it may be happening all over. Perhaps this isn’t that new and I’ve just never noticed.

We’ve had many new practices open and change around us. Most significant have been emergency services. Some emergency practices are now a bit more like human urgent care or walk-in clinics. They cannot do anything requiring presurgical bloodwork or anesthesia. If you think that your dog may need something like that, call first. You might otherwise lose valuable, critical time going to a clinic that is not able to help you.

Giving Tuesday is here!! While we always appreciate our direct financial supporters, there are some other nonprofits who make it possible for us to stretch our dollars much further while taking care of our basenjis. Without them, our costs would jump and we might not be able to help so many, so please consider making donations to them to support our basenjis! Let them know Camp Basenji suggested them!

operationsnipfl.org provides us with extremely low cost routine vetting: spays, neuters, vaccinations, routine bloodwork and even dentals! Our costs here are half or less of the expected costs of other vets. This organization has seen a lot of our recent b kids. Please consider helping them to stay open for us!!

https://spcatampabay.org/veterinary-center/ has been a great source of vetting for our b kids who have somewhat more complicated health issues. The vets here have been very accommodating to the special needs of several of our b-campers.

https://hemopet.org/donations/ has been a source of very reasonable blood tests, adjusting the interpretations of thyroid tests to acknowledge the different ranges of sighthounds.

Thank you always for your generous support of our rescue activities! The models in the pic include several of our campers who are available now - details to come!!

I have had the pleasure of fostering a couple of basenji mixes from Africa. We were the first refuge for one just out of Africa. Life in Africa is frequently neither kind nor easy for dogs, so winning over the trust of one is truly special. I have never met this boy who needs a new home by Thanksgiving, but I expect that he will appreciate someone opening heart and home. The info shared on this handsome boy is "Very friendly to people - but men make him nervous - and rather submissive to other dogs. As far as I know, he does not have a bite history either." Please respond to contact info in the link that follows.

Strange and challenging times. If life isn't going how you planned or hoped, there may be some help if you know where to look. Here is a list of potential sources of vetting assistance. Note that it does not include potential local help like the low cost clinics we use at Camp Basenji for spay/neuter, routine bloodwork and vaccine needs (note that locally one may also find help for housing or shelter even with a dog, though it may be more of a challenge). Water matters! That expensive water may not be so good for you.

The county makes a big deal about what they do to the water and adjusts the pH to be around 7.4 (maybe a little higher when we test - strip on the right in the photo). Our county water lines are 'maintained' twice yearly by switching from chloramine to chloride for a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, this causes a few of our b's to suddenly have soft stool or worse, so we switch to jugs of purchased drinking water. We had a couple of visiting dogs who have CKD. They suddenly started having issues - not wanting to drink much or eat. A quick test (strip on the left - which I should have done before using the water), revealed that the jugs of water had a pH of less than 6.8. Switched back to our fluoride-filtered water, recovery began.(Note that the pic was taken after strips had been sitting around for a few minutes, making results slightly more exaggerated.)

Do you know what's in your water?

This is Penny, a b mix, who has a history of seizures for the few years she's been with us. We've tried a lot of things. Levetiracetam made each one much worse (we had to pad her floor to keep her safe). Phenobarbital has worked to minimize the severity, but she would still have them every other week or so depending on triggers like mold or scents. After much research, I found another potential trigger, fluoride, so we got special filters to remove it from our water. It has been magical for her! Now, she seems to remain seizure-free until it's time to change the filter! This has allowed her to go for a few months without seizures! As a bonus, my arthritic symptoms have also been greatly reduced.

Here's to cleaner water!

Guess who's had his special surgeries! It's been a long week!

SB&WSF (Single Black & White Spayed Female) seeks safe, secure, loving home.

5 yo Murphy has been with us awhile now. She's been in with the pack since just a few days after arrival. She is a typical b girl, very sweet when she wants something and grumpy and obstinate if all is not as she wishes. She has the cutest tail wag. Murphy will greet you with that buzzing wag like you've been gone for days even if it's been just a few minutes. She was pretty used to doing what she wanted on her terms, so her new family should plan on rules and stick to them. She has responded well to training and now will sit, stay, look at me, leave it and 'eat' as part of her mealtime routine. She will require her new home to keep up this training consistently - she will test. Don't cave just because of that cute tight loop tail wiggle.
She is a serious player and needs any new canine companion to not take her aggressive play style personally. She does relent, but careful play supervision is required while she settles in. She will play with girls, but will also take it too far sometimes if not carefully supervised. Her preference is definitely for the boys, particularly the younger ones. She is curling up closely with everyone in her current pack.
Murphy has lost quite a few pounds since her arrival - now down to a fit 24-25 pounds! She does not have hypothyroidism at this time. She does not seem to be bothered by the cold like most of our b's are. She does seem to heat up in the sun more than the others, so protecting her from too much sun and providing her with a wet, white sheet during a summer heat walk will keep her more comfortable (though walks shouldn't happen on hot surfaces).
Murphy has been doing well with a strict diet and lots of play exercise. The strict diet and training that comes with each meal has increased her focus on what the human wants while keeping her from becoming food-aggressive. She is young and has been surprisingly active even when she was a bit heavy.
She can be moved while she sleeps, but let her get to know you first and clip on a leash to guide her to a better spot initially.
She has mixed in with her foster pack pretty well, though everything is a bit more jazzed up now. She's ready for her next adventure!! Her Fanconi DNA status is pending, but her apparent mom was DNA clear, so she is likely unaffected. Her adoption fee is $300.
If you are interested, have no small children in the home, and ideally no other canine girls in the home, please submit an application at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScvLxjWbS5Mwhl9Z4IPj55JM4culJBkZaaWGbjT_fNTeleNVw/viewform and send us a private message.

We appreciate all support. We also recognize that there are a couple of other organizations helping basenjis who may have a broad impact on others. The SPCA Tampa Bay Veterinary Center has provided Camp Basenji with discounted services for our many fosters while also accommodating the special needs that many have. Hemopet.org provides discounts on bloodwork tests to rescue organizations. Hemopet provides services to all breeds of dogs, but we are still eager to see it supported since it has provided Camp Basenji with lots of tests, particularly full thyroid testing, that has been beneficial to both our fosters and adopted basenjis in their adoptive homes. It would be unfortunate if their services became unavailable because they ran out of funds.

While Ollie, pictured below, appreciates your support of Camp Basenji, he also appreciate your support of the two other organizations listed above.

Pack walk!! We get stopped on our walks regularly. You can imagine how I'm laughing hysterically inside when someone makes the comment "so basenjis must be a calm and easy-going breed, right?"

It had been another rough year at Camp Basenji, but that is to be expected when we take in so many seniors and b's with health issues. The new generation is moving in now - younger ones with special health needs or behavioral issues. 'Youth' has allowed us to get back to walking the pack again!

PSA:
A Reminder for some and new info for others - xylitol is deadly for dogs and is in more and more products: peanut butter, gum, beverages, medications, etc. To be safe, never assume that anyone, pharmacist or otherwise, has checked to make sure xylitol is not in a product, particularly if the product is designed for human consumption. Check the list of ingredients. If you don't see it, ask!

A dog owner was given a prescription for Ursofalk suspension - Ursodiol - which is used to dissolve gallstones. Her dog became very ill and is now at the vets on fluids trying to save it's life. The formula for this suspension changed and apparently the vet was not aware.
IT NOW CONTAINS XYLITOL WHICH IS DEADLY TO OUR ANIMALS!!
If your vet prescribes a liquid (suspension) form of Ursodiol make sure there is no Xylitol in the product.
"Each 5 mL of the URSOFALK Suspension contains 250 mg of ursodeoxycholic acid. The suspension also contains benzoic acid, purified water, xylitol, glycerol, Avicel RC-591, propylene glycol, sodium citrate dihydrate, sodium cyclamate, citric acid, sodium chloride and 87017 lemon flavour."
