Camp Basenji

Camp Basenji We are a rescue organization for basenjis and would love to have you join our efforts. Please like us and add us to your homepage. It's time to share.

We DNA test our rescued basenjis for Fanconi as part of preventative health care. There is a lot that needs to be fixed in this world. Here's a little bit of our efforts to fix a tiny part, helping basenjis that bring a smile to our faces every day - even when we're cleaning up their ... AGAIN. Our obsession is for the basenji breed, a unique and challenging cat-like mind in a relatively small, fa

lsely unassuming dog body. We have had many basenjis pass through our homes as fosters and have found creative ways to best help them both mentally and physically. There is new medical information so pertinent to basenjis - check out the latest in Fanconi on the link above. A challenging economy has taught us to seek cost-effective ways to help our four-legged friends. Before rehoming your basenji, please contact us to see if we can help you solve any issues that may split up your family. Basenjis end up in rescue for all kinds of reasons. Some families had circumstances change, so the b needs to find a new home where he'll fit in. Others have stories we'll never know and need a bit of help before they can move on to their forever home. We appreciate the efforts anyone makes to get a basenji into our rescue. We will do everything possible to give the basenji a great new life. Having started in Florida, we are a growing organization with volunteers all over the US. We are still growing and welcome volunteers to join us. We also encourage volunteers to consider volunteering with other rescue organizations. Volunteering locally provides Camp Basenji volunteers an opportunity to share basenji information locally and be there to assist any basenjis that may show up in a local shelter. We have received our non-profit 501c3 status letter.

Two b’s are not to be. That is not a question!
Darling little health-challenged Pico has decided that chasing and grabbing spicy flying bugs is fun😳. One pic is of Pico, eating despite hosting a stinger in his tongue (which I was able to identify and remove after eating - the second pic…). He takes more chances than a cat! The next day he was trying to grab a wasp…

Be calm my steely little cold heart. His magic is destined to run out too early, but for now, it flows. Blue tongue? Cold mouth? They still work. Such a healthy appetite. Normal desires to play. When he needs a little help, he knows to ask for it in his quiet way. He is a special one destined to break hearts.

Introducing Pico, aka Drew! He’s such a tiny guy that the name Pico quickly jumped out at us. He was the litter runt, just 5.5 pounds while his littermates were 8-9 pounds at 10 weeks old. Why would such an adorable little boy be with us in rescue?

This is not a solicitation for donations. His breeder is supporting him. His responsible breeder just wanted to give Pico the best he could have in life while not subjecting a family with young children the heartbreak that may come with this delightful pup. You see, Pico has significant congenital heart defects - yep, multiple defects.

We’ve had a lot of experience with many medical conditions (currently have two others with heart conditions in our home, including one that has just one of Pico’s defects). This was Pico’s first visit with the cardiologist. His defects are so significant that there is not a fix, even at university vet centers. Anything would be highly experimental and interfere with a normal puppyhood. We are choosing quality over quantity.

For now, he seems quite normal, other than being pretty small (though growing like a w**d!). The cardiologist was pleased with his lack of symptoms. He runs and plays, showing no fatigue. We will give appropriate meds as he progresses and needs them. Hopefully, he continues to defy odds for a long time. For now, this smart puppy will have a grand time.

LOST: Chapin, SC one week ago

15 yo basenji girl, last seen wearing her pink diaper when she shot out the door. Her heartbroken owner and she just recently moved to a new home, so she’s unfamiliar with the area.
She was last seen on Fair Haven Way in Chapin S C. Owner has a lot of people looking for her, calls animal control twice daily, Lexington county as well.. online also. She has a microchip. Message any sightings immediately please!
