Why "TotemWorks" ? Where does the name come from? Native North American Totems
Not including the totem pole, many Native North American tribes had or have traditions providing every person with nine different animals that will accompany them throughout life. These animals act as guides, surfacing in our lives depending on where we head and what we need at a given moment. One of those animals in pa

rticular is said to be your "totem animal;" it is the animal that is with you for life, both in the physical and spiritual world. Many people have a variety of different animal spirits but their "totem animal" is their main guide through life.

*** TOP 10 TIPS FOR ATTENDING NFCC 2023 ***

1) Wear comfortable shoes! With more than 200,000 square feet of floor space and things to do, you'll get your steps in!

2) Plan accordingly. Check out the Q&A and panel schedule on the website to see when and where things are happening! There's lots to see and do!

3) Cosplay! We want to see your cosplay costumes! The cosplay contest takes place on Saturday, however, we want to see those costumes all weekend long.

4). Come with a fully charged cellphone and a charging cable! You'll be taking photos non stop, so make sure you arrive with a full charge, and bring a charging cable just in case!

5). Utilize the floor plan and plan accordingly! The NFCC official online program will include a detailed floor plan that will help you navigate the more than 250 vendors, artists and attractions!

6). Don't forget cash! There will be multiple ATM's on site, and although some vendors accept credit or debit, some don't. Be prepared to wait in an ATM line, or better yet, hit an ATM on your way to the Convention Centre!

7). Stay hydrated! Pack a water bottle or budget for purchases at the Food Court! With all of that walking, you'll be sure to get parched!

8 ) Pack only the necessities! Whether it's your favourite item to get signed by your favourite celebrity or your cosplay gear, pack as lightly as possible! Bring only what's necessary!

9). Ask questions! Our volunteers and staff will be branded with NFCC T-shirts. They're on site to help YOU! If you're not sure where something is, or just have a general question about the event, ask away!

10). Have FUN! We can't wait to see you June 9-11!

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia - a day to raise awareness about LGBTQIA+ rights across the world and inspire everyone to take action to support the rights of LGBTQIA+ people.

With LGBTQIA+ people under attack in so many places around the world International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia is more important and relevant than ever.

This years’s theme is “Together Always: United in Diversity” - a theme that brings attention to the importance of solidarity, allyship, and community across identities, borders, and movements.

The best way to participate in the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia is to be an active ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

Here are some ways you can be an active ally:

Educate yourself - education is a key element to ridding the world of homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. And once you are educated you can help inform others.

Be a visible ally by wearing clothing or accessories that make you a visible ally, put a flag or sign in your yard that shows your support of the LGBTQIA+ community or share this post on your social media site.

Speak up against discrimination. If you witness homophobia, transphobia, or biphobia, it’s important to speak up against it. There’s no such thing as a silent ally.

Be a safe person for your LGBTQIA+ friends and family members. If you have a member of your family or a friend who is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community reach out to them and let them know that you’re there to support them and that you will be a safe place for them.

Support organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community by giving to the Mama Bears Giving Circle which awards grants to well vetted organizations that serve the LGBTQIA+ community. The MBGC has awarded $150,000.00 in grants in the last year. Make a donation today in honor of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia to show your support.
Here’s a link where you can become a monthly donor or make a one time donation: https://legacycollective.org/mamabears/

❤️We must never give up until all LGBTQIA+ people can live free from fear and discrimination.❤️

Our Story

For me, this has been both the African Elephant, and the discipline of art that has been my guide, and my symbol of strength through life. I have always loved art and nature, and both my parents are artistic and creative. In high school I was split between pursuing history or art, but it was a particularly awesome teacher in high school that tilted my hand towards art for post secondary education. Although I have always loved all animals, the African elephant became the forerunner during University in 1992 when for one assignment we had to choose an animal to base a project on. At the time my mother was going through breast cancer and I chose the African elephant for the strong matriarchal qualities they held. A powerful female symbol of strength, taking care of other females in the herd spoke to me a lot, and fueled me forward in creating, and has stayed with me ever since.
