CLAIRE SMITH
2025 Qld Hero of the Year Finalist!

We are so excited to announce that Claire is going to be heading to Brisbane on Nov 18th to attend the QUEENSLANDER OF THE YEAR AWARDS.
She is one of 4 finalist in the category LOCAL HERO.

Claire has dedicated her life to our wildlife for the last 20 years, and has been a highly vocal advocate not just in Qld, but Nationally too, for the protection of our precious wildlife and environment.

She’s spoken directly with politicians at all level of Government, she has called out those who have destroyed habitat in the pursuit of profit, those who are benefiting from the destruction of wildlife, lead the call in our region for greater awareness and wildlife education. She built a kangaroo hospital and raised over $600k for other wildlife groups during the horrifying 2019/20 fires.

We are very proud of her.

OUR AMAZING TRIPLETS!
Holly, Molly & Polly. Our ringtail triplets! They are all well over 300gms now and thriving. Climbing, swinging, stretching are all part of their nightly activities, along with eating of course!

We are so pleased that all three girls are doing so well.

How about we think of a collective name for them?
Have you got any suggestions?
Surviving triplets is very rare in possums, so these three little girls are very special.

Can’t wait to read your suggestions!

WHERE TO FROM HERE RSPCA QLD?

Darren Maier - HOW DOES RSPCA QLD TACKLE SUCH A HEINOUS STAIN ON THEIR REPUTATION?

Bullying, flagrant abandonment of governance, inappropriate relationships, the list goes on.

He made many core staff redundant and replaced knowledge and experience with personal friends, unqualified ‘bimbos’, and people he could manipulate.

To all the wonderful staff and volunteers who were forced out of RSPCA QLD through bullying, threats, hours drastically cut down to as little as one day per week, you deserve a public, unreserved apology from the new Board.
This must be must not be left unresolved.

It is the task of the new Board to start putting things right.
Can RSPCA QLD ever truly recover? Who knows, but without the right leadership it is doomed to fail.

Without full and open transparency, integrity, compassion and strong leadership skills RSPCA QLD cannot rise from the ashes of destruction. I would therefore strongly urge the Board to take their time appointing a new CEO. Be very sure this person is there for the right reasons - not greed and power.

There needs to be, in my opinion, a financial forensic audit carried out.
Also, any of Darren’s remaining minions should be ‘laid off’. Any vestiges of his reign can’t be allowed to remain at RSPCA QLD - festering away, continuing to drip the toxicity he created into the workplace culture.

There needs to be a serious clean out!

Nothing will change unless the new Board take responsibility, and tackle the diabolical mess they’ve inherited.

He may be gone, and Justine Hickey may be gone, but they will never be forgiven!

Of course….he surrounded himself with accomplices which is why there were so many redundancies…we hope the new Chair will expose this and remove these people too from their posts.

There are very good people who have left RSPCA QLD because of this man. He was allowed to ride rough shod over everyone and anyone. The toxicity caused many people to resign and if you’ve heard 1/10 of their stories you’d have to wonder why he lasted 5 years!

We hope the next CEO will be the sort of person who cares about the animals and staff. Someone who will work with those who have the experience and skills necessary. We hope that this person will help repair the reputation of RSPCA QLD.

The previous Board are as much to blame for what transpired over Darren’s tenure.

We wish RSPCA QLD well.
We hope that the dire consequences of terrible management, selfishness, bullying, and the loss of wonderful staff will stand as a constant reminder of how putting the wrong people in positions of power can bring an organisation to its knees.

First the QLD RSPCA Chair left the sinking ship and now the CEO!

Darren Maier has left the building!!!

No farewell party in sight as the architect of destruction departs QLD RSPCA.

It seems that Dirty Darren was ‘allowed’ to resign after five years of unacceptable behaviour. He should count himself a lucky man as many, many people would have liked to have seen him personally answerable to the demise of QLD RSPCA and its previously well respected reputation.

The new Chair of the Board, Louise Cox, apparently is welcoming all complaints directly to her email: [email protected]
This is a refreshing change indeed.

Let’s hope that those who have been impacted by the Maier years can find justice, all staff can resume to feeling valued instead of being bullied and the animals have a return to the standard of care they received prior to this man’s reign of selfish, power-hungry narcissism.

TURN UP YOUR VOLUME 😀

Holly, Molly and Polly are growing very fast and are absolutely thriving.

The triplets are still on four milk formula feeds a day plus fresh, yummy native tip. They really enjoy chomping their way through all the different native browse we provide for them, mimicking what they would be doing if they were in the wild getting around on mum’s back.

In reality, however, it is highly unlikely mum would have been able to raise these three girls. But she gave them an amazing start which is no mean feat before she lost her life.

These little miracles are now transitioning to big girl formula and by Sunday they will have completed that transition.

Aren’t they absolutely beautiful! 🩷
