Sometimes they make it look like we have a farm full of Western pleasure horses instead of racing Thoroughbreds—but I’m okay with that. My goal isn’t just to breed a racehorse; it’s to breed an athlete built for a long-term sport horse career, with racing as the first chapter, not the whole story.

With the run of bad luck we’ve had at the farm this past week, my paranoia got the best of me today. Since Dr. Growette was already here, I asked her to ultrasound Dyana—just for peace of mind. After finding thickening in Surprise’s placenta and low estrogen levels earlier this week, I couldn’t help but worry about Dyana too, especially since she’s only one week behind Surprise in her pregnancy.

The good news? Everything looked normal in the areas we could see, and most importantly, we got a strong, healthy foal heartbeat.

I’m still planning to run estrogen and progesterone tests on Monday when the lab reopens, just to be sure. But after a chaotic week, this was the positive update I needed.

Elusive Surprise: Statue Mode

Last night, we celebrated Sean being brave enough to give Surprise her IM injection—big moment for him, zero reaction from her. Tonight, it’s my turn, but this time it’s her 35cc IV injection, and once again, she proves why she’s the easiest high-maintenance mare on the farm.

She stands like a statue the entire time, not even blinking at the needle or the slow push of meds. Six different medications a day, and she just takes it all in stride like the seasoned pro she is.

Honestly, if she weren’t so absurdly good about it, I might complain more about how much attention she demands right now. But when a mare makes your job this easy, you just hand her a treat and keep the pharmacy stocked.

He's not quite ready for IV, but Sean helped with Surprise's intramuscular medication tonight.

The snow has mostly melted, so the yearlings got to go back out in the big field today. They seemed happy about it. True to form, Caesar conserved the most energy.

Foaling Season Begins… With a Pharmacy

2025 foaling season is kicking off the same way 2024 ended—bottles of medications and stacks of syringes.

Last November, we brought Surprise home from the Keeneland sale after keeping an eye on the older mares to make sure they landed in good spots. She arrived already in foal, and thanks to her previous farm being kind enough to send over her foaling records, we learned that her last delivery was a red bag—an emergency situation where the placenta separates too soon. Because of that history, we did a full exam and bloodwork yesterday to check on her progress.

What we found confirmed that extra caution was needed—her placenta showed some areas of thickening, and her estrogen and progesterone levels were lower than ideal. At 19 years old, with 12 foals behind her, she’s at higher risk for complications like dystocia, placental failure, and even a uterine bleed.

So, we’re pulling out all the stops with a treatment plan that includes antibiotics, hormone support, anti-inflammatories, and medications to improve placental function and blood flow. This will be Surprise’s last foal, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure a safe delivery for both her and the baby.

It’s a lot of bottles and a lot of careful management, but she’s worth it. Stay tuned—foaling season is officially underway!

Today I'm continuing to build the "road" system in the new 3-acre dry lot.

These gravel paths in the most heavily traveled areas will provide mud-free connection points to water, hay, gates and other enrichment areas in the paddock.
