With Stevie's break cut short, and it being too hot for walks, we all met for a birthday lunch! Was lovely for us all to get together and see how we support each other with our roles for Pluto's. And with the upcoming expansion it's all hands on deck!

Oh and in case you didn't know, Thea & Cody are Stevie's, Freya & Oli are Becky's... together we are Pluto's 💪

As Stevie shuts down her side of things for her birthday week off, it has come to our attention just how full we are 😟. Sadly we're unable to take on any more training cases until mid September, and many of our group walks are now full. If you need support please still message as we can signpost you to other professionals if we're unable to help

However do not dispair! There is something HUGE being quietly built somewhere in Galmpton that we cannot wait to tell you all about. As soon as the blueprints are approved, our Pluto's humans will be the first to know 😉

📆 Save the Date 📆

🐶 Berry Head Fun Day and Dog Show 🐶

📌 Saturday 21st September 2024 📌

The word is finally out! We've been keeping this secret for months and so excited to finally tell you all.

Pluto's Pet Care + Training Support®️ will be supporting Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, Little Valley Animal Shelter, Exeter (RSPCA), and Guardhouse Café on this fun day dedicated to our four legged family, and keeping them and livestock safe.

Many qualified and local pet professionals will be coming together to support this wonderful charitable day, with all proceeds going to the trust and rescue centre.

I am going to update our dedicated page on the website very soon to give you all the details of the day, including a live demonstration by me about keeping dogs under control around livestock.

Watch this space as we update you over the summer with the events of the day 🐕🐑🐄

Sadly, the world of rescuing dogs has a dark side. Not everyone is doing it for the reasons you'd think. Thankfully, the rescue industry, including importing of dogs is heavily regulated.

If you have any reason to believe a business is not above board, first contact your local council. Pluto's is currently assisting on one of these investigations, and has been given some good advice from DEFRA. Not only check if your chosen charity is indeed who they say they are by checking their charity number on the .gov website, but you can also check if they're a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes.

🌻A please be kind post 🌻

If you are waiting for a reply from me either via text, WhatsApp, email, voice message, Google or the website, I will get to you as soon as I am able. This past month has been absolute chaos, and even with me pulling 18 hour days, 7 days a week, somehow I am still very much behind. During the day I am hands on with the dogs, so only have early mornings and evenings to catch up, as well as run a house and see my children.

If something is time sensitive, please feel free to message again. I really hate being so far behind but will get to you as soon as humanly possible 🙏

🟩 Keeping yourself safe when choosing anything dog related 🟩

It never fails to amaze us the lengths people will go to when trying to conceal the truth, especially in the unregulated industry of dogs.

Using Pluto's as an example, here's some suggestions as to what to look for when looking for support with your dog. Click on the photos for more information.

Stay safe out there and remember Pluto's is available if you have any concerns.

Tick Season!

Due to the recent (and welcome) warmer weather there is now an abundance of ticks!
Here are Bill and Sydney demonstrating how much dogs love to explore long grass, unfortunately so do the ticks. We briefly check your dogs at the end of each walk. However please be vigilant also and ensure that your pet is up to date with any treatment.

Thank you Sally Know Your Dog - Behaviour & Training with Sally Lewis

We've always said we'd much rather a happy, 'naughty' dog (there's no such thing as a naughty dog but you know what we mean 😉) than a compliant, obedient and quite frankly miserable one.

Dog's do not need to know sit... They need to feel safe and have their innate behaviours and needs met.

Sally teaches amazing courses to the public and is offering 50% off her course. Suitable for all caregivers no matter experience or dog breed.

What do you mean – obedience isn’t everything?

I want to make it clear that this post is not an excuse to let a dog run riot with no recall if they don't return when called yet, so if you don’t want to read until the end, please don’t take that message from this graphic.

I mostly work with adult and adolescent dogs whose families have reached out to me because of aspects of their behaviour. Much of this behaviour occurs around things, situations, or contexts that they encounter within their day to day life.
It isn’t uncommon for people to explain to me that they went to formal obedience classes with their dog when they were a puppy, which has led to some of the disappointment they feel in not knowing how to approach the behaviour they’re now seeing. Even if these classes are taught using ethical methods, basic formal obedience is something I really would not make your number one priority when teaching a young dog how to handle life around them. If you're in to the dog behaviour lingo, then you can think of this as "operant stuff". This is something I have learnt myself, through time and experience. I do not want to offend any trainers with this post - training can be fun, good for bonding, and mental stimulation! But the truth is, knowing a ‘sit’ doesn’t help when a dog can’t cope with proximity to another dog. Knowing a ‘stay’ does nothing to help a dog who really struggles in busy situations. It is all very human-centred and doesn’t do a great deal for how your dog feels about life around them, or behaves in response to things. Many of my clients, when meeting me for a behaviour appointment, will say to me “I’m really sorry but he doesn’t walk to heel”. I couldn’t give a scooby if your dog isn’t walking to heel, as long as you can manage them and as long as they aren’t distressed (which is a common cause of pulling). I'd rather see a dog feeling confident in exploring the environment towards the end of their lead, and checking in with their guardian.

If you want to do basic obedience then go for it. It shouldn’t be at the expense of…
• Supporting your dog or puppy to feel safe and happy in an environment.
• Supporting your dog or puppy to feel safe and happy in proximity to dogs or people. I see a lot of adolescents that absolutely lose it with frustration at the sight of other dogs, and starting off right in puppyhood can really help.
• Learning about dog body language – this should be absolutely number one for anyone caring for dogs.
• Learning about appropriate sleep, exercise, and mental stimulation (especially for those with puppies).
• Mainly focusing on life skills and not so much arbitrary stuff that really doesn’t make much of a difference when your dog is finding things tough on walks or in general life.

I think there is an exception for things like recall, leaving things when asked, and 'drop', as leaving things or dropping things when asked could mean your dog doesn’t eat something dangerous, and recall is an obvious one.

Training can be great mental stimulation for dogs and can be a fun way to bond, but don’t make it your number one priority if it then means that you ignore the stuff that really effects day to day life and wellbeing.

I have put together an online course for those who want to learn some of the stuff that I consider 'essential' for young dogs. You will have access to this for a year once enrolled, and it is perfect to do alongside anything else you might be attending with your puppy or adolescent.
