If you ever hand off your dog or cat to the vet for bloodwork, and wondered how we took the blood… this is a good video for you. It is really, usually, a quick, straightforward process. Often the patient is even less anxious in the back… if they are the type who protects you and gets anxious while you are there. Coco here was a great patient… made more that she was in her own driveway… and the blood test collection was done and over before she even knew it! Dogs sometimes sleep with their eyes partially open, and there are a few theories as to why. 1. She may be in the early stages of sleep, and not yet fully asleep. In the early stages of sleep dogs relax deeply but doze lightly. They appear asleep but have not fully lost consciousness. They often return to full alertness if startled, as demonstrated here by my dog India. 2. This may be an evolutionary instinct developed to maintain a degree of situational awareness. To protect them in the wild from predators, they may keep half their brain on alert. 3. Some may show a raised “third eyelid”, known as a nictitating membrane, while asleep. It is a partially clear, partly pigmented pink or yellowish thin tissue starting from the corner of the eye nearest the nose. 4. Your dog may be in REM sleep, where many keep their eyes partially open. This is the stage where dreams occur, and you may also see twitching, barking, and eye movements. Some people confuse this with seizures, which often involve more violent movements and the dogs are unable to be aroused from sleep. Seizuring dogs have wide open eyes, staring off into space, as opposed to asleep dogs whose eyes are semi-relaxed. 5. Less commonly, it is due to a medical condition not allowing the eyelids to completely close. In these dogs, they would always sleep with their eyes open, not occasionally.
