When someone comes to me for training, one of the most common complaints is that their dog is "stubborn". Particularly with my own breed, Australian Cattle Dogs (Heelers). Apparently, they actively choose to ignore us out of sheer will. The irony is most dogs, (and particularly the aforementioned Cattle Dogs) WANT to please their owners. They thrive on knowing what is expected of them and how to make the decisions we want them to. For example, when I walk into a space, whether that space is familiar or new Stark instantly looks for a crate, bed, or other boundary. Not because I tell him to, not because he knows he HAS to, but because he knows it's the right choice. That choice, and so many others have VALUE to him.

If you feel like your dog isn't listening it's always one of three reasons:

1) They can't in that moment either due to overwhelm, distractions, or the inability to process the situation.

2) They don't understand what you want of them.

3) They don't have the desire to do so.

So next time you're frustrated with your dog, ask yourself why, and then problem solve to find a solution.

Our third Team of the Month for August is Team Maya! Maya and Meredith have been with us for some time! They started out doing private sessions with Lisa and they have since participated in our Confident Canine, Confidence 4 Life, Scent Work, Skills 4 Success and Fit classes! Meredith is very committed to ensuring that Maya has a well-rounded life, providing her with consistent training and opportunities to showcase her talents. Through their hard work and dedication, Maya has not only developed her scent work abilities but has also gained a ton confidence in herself.

With Meredith by her side, Maya is sure to continue shining and making a positive impact in our QnB community!

Our second Team of the Month for August is Team Fabio!
Fabio has been making great strides in scent work under the guidance of his owner Elaine. With Elaine's training and encouragement, Fabio has been steadily building his confidence in finding odor and making great progress in his scent work training. Together, they make a dynamic team that is sure to continue achieving great things in the world of scent work. With each successful find, Fabio's confidence grows, and he becomes more eager to tackle new challenges!

We're getting ready for today's open house and it's easy to feel nostalgic about how QnB came to be. It's such an easy answer for me, Luna.

Luna came into my life after my Jack Russell Ari passed away. Although I've lost several dogs (including Luna) Ari's passing was by far the hardest choice for me. Diagnosed with Diabetes later in life, we had struggled to get her blood sugar under control and made the difficult decision that her quality of life was disintegrating.

Heartbroken, I was lucky that a jumping, nipping, crazy girl that no one wanted was destined to come into my life. We were Luna's third home, and she had spent several months in the county shelter. I had fallen in love with her eyes, I swear those eyes could see into my soul. I remember my husband telling me she had been waiting for me and I have no doubt he was right.

We began basic obedience shortly after she came home. Knowing little about training I just did a Google search and came across Great Salt Lake Dog Training Club. I chose them because they did beginning classes through Agility and Agility had always interested me. The irony is we never got to Agility.

We had a rough road when we started, from biting a brush during a test to her inability to be separated from me. But our journey there brought many friends and started my training path. I was dragged to help in that first class, afraid of talking to a group of people, what did I know about teaching them? But Allison Russell persisted and before long I was teaching classes with her, and then my own.

I started with puppies but went on to develop their trick program. Luna by my side and my first demo. She would come to class with me each week to train and show off her favorite tricks. Then Toni Sjoblom started bugging me to try Scent Work. That's where I found Luna's true love.

Luna lived to sniff like she lived to be by my side. We'd go on to accomplish so much, me and that dog no one wanted. Our journey, her soul, inspired me to help other dogs and their humans. Luna became why I train, why there IS a QnB. (We were almost the Lunatics! instead of QnB). But we train the way we do because of Stark, but that's another tale.

Luna's Legacy continues to guide me every day and is the heart of QnB.

Our first Team of the Month for August is Team Fish! Fish has truly blossomed under the guidance of his owner Keepers in our Confident Canine and Confidence for Life courses. Starting off in our beginning training class, Fish showed great potential and eagerness to learn. With a dedicated owner who is committed to helping him reach his full potential, Fish has been excelling in the more advanced classes, mastering new skills and behaviors with ease.
It's truly heartwarming to see the bond between Fish and Keepers grow stronger as they work together towards their training goals. With patience, consistency, and a lot of love, Fish is well on his way to becoming a well-rounded and confident Silken Windhound

Remember that Confidence is always key, it's more important than any skill we teach our dogs.

Confident they know what you are asking of them.

Confident that the world is none of their business.

Confident that you have their back.

Confident that they know how to make the right choices.

The more we tell them they are right for the little things, the more Confidence grows. Build up your dog, make them a Super Hero, and let them believe that together you can do anything.
