Tucson 🌵➡️ Las Vegas 🎲

We made it in 7 hours with a few potty stops and a trip to Petsmart. Garrett got car sick but waited until we got at Petsmart in Phoenix to vomit up his breakfast. Poor guy!

I got him a Ben & Jerry's doggie ice cream to soothe his stomach, but he got sick again.

We're now resting at Vince's nephew's house. Garrett laid down as I gave him his daily dose of IV fluids. We will be back on the road later this evening to head home.

Garrett's medical expenses will be very high to fight his Valley Fever infection. He's on an expensive antifungal medication that was donated to PACC. We have an appointment for him on Thursday with our holistic vet who will come up with a health plan for him.

Please consider being Garrett's monthly sponsor!

Sixteen days ago, we put down Gabriel, our 16 year old Australian Cattle Dog . Just two hours later, I found myself sobbing on my Southwest flight to Tucson when I heard that one of the three flights attendants was named Gabriel.

I took it as a sign that I was supposed to be on that flight to visit my friend, Penny. She is a Pima Animal Care Center volunteer and helped transport Junior and Cake for their journeys to us last year. But I wasn't intending to rescue another dog. We just had lost Gabriel and my heart was still hurting.

As I waited for other passengers to board, I came across a post about a medical dog at PACC. His name started with a G.

I thought, "weird coincidence". 🤔

His foster mom was the medical rescue foster coordinator. She had made the FB post about him because she was working long hours at the shelter and her husband also happened to be working long hours that weekend... so she brought him to the shelter lobby and set up a temporary pen for the dog.

Another coincidence.

Penny brought me to PACC and we met the dog and his foster mom. His extensive story of survival and ongoing illness was very compelling.

But I just needed just one more sign before I could tell Vince what rescue plan I was about to hatch.

The next evening, back at the ranch, Vince took my mom out to dinner. Their waiter's name - Gabriel.

That was my sign. Three signs, total.

So when people ask me how we choose the next dog to be a Lucky One.. it's the universe giving us signs that we can not ignore.

Everyone... meet Garrett!

He's a 2.5 year old , 40-pound pit mix. He was seen wandering the desert for about 3 weeks. A good Samaritan trapped him and brought him to PACC. Garrett had extensive lacerations all over his body. He had been attacked by javelinas (wild pigs) or coyotes.

Even worse, Garrett was coughing and tested positive for Valley Fever. He had developed pneumonia and was put in an oxygen chamber for days. The veterinary shelter staff worked hard to save him, but suggested humane euthanasia because Garrett was extremely uncomfortable and not doing well.

Well, this little guy is a fighter and survivor. He fought off wild animals and he fought off the pneumonia. The medical rescue foster coordinator took him home to recuperate.

Unfortunately, his most recent xrays show little improvement from the Valley Fever infection. He is acting pretty normal and is active, but he's too ill to go under anesthesia to be neutered.

Because we are an approved rescue partner with PACC, we will be able to adopt him and take him to the sanctuary for further care and to give him the best years of his life.

Your financial support for Garrett would be very much appreciated. He's on a multitude of medications and daily IV fluids. He has an upcoming appointment with our holistic vet who will come up with a health plan for Garrett.

Garrett is our newest Lucky One! Yay!! 🎉

Thank you PACC for saving him and Kleighrayne for fostering him!! 💓

Good Saturday morning!

We are out of vinegar and bleach. My mom washes our dogs' laundry and she uses those cleaning supplies to get the dog beds and towels clean and disinfected.

There's so much work that goes into running a sanctuary properly. It's all of the behind-the-scenes things that we do that keep our sanctuary animals happy and healthy.

Your support is appreciated and needed!
Thank you!!

Did you know that not one but two of our sanctuary dogs were diagnosed with cancer in 2024?

First it was Elliott. We had taken him in from Wake County Animal Shelter in North Carolina. A local cattle dog rescue declined to take him because he "didn't look cattle dog enough". So, we had him transported from North Carolina to California.

He had a mass growing on the side of his belly. It had already broken open and was infected. We had the orange-sized mass removed. The biopsy showed it to be Soft Tissue Sarcoma. ☹️

Elliott also had terrible issues with his skin and he was caked with a ye**ty crust. He was incredibly itchy and miserable. His entire immune system was compromised.

Elliott had electrochemotherapy treatments and vitamin C infusion therapies to help him fight the cancer. He's on a diet of raw meats, Ollie fresh dog food and supplements to keep him healthy.

On this $5 Friday, we dedicate it to Elliott and his fight against cancer. 🎗💪
He's got a recheck with his oncologist on June 23rd. Please pray that Elliott is still free of cancer!

Happy Fonzie Friday!

Here's Fonzie in his sling that supports him so that he can enjoy his breakfast.

We could use more canned dog food, cooling mats and other items for Fonzie and his friends. Please check out our Amazon wishlist.

Last year, our dear holistic vets at Southampton Pet Hospital retired and closed their practice. Thankfully, we found new wonderful holistic vets at Meridian Veterinary Care in Folsom, which is a little over an hour away from us to take care of the ranch dogs. Since cats don't travel as well as the dogs, we have chosen Acorn Vet in Davis (about a 20 min drive) to be our veterinary hospital for our cats and exotics.

I have been concerned about Nacho Cat urinating excessively in his litterbox, so I made the trek to Meridian Vet last Friday afternoon (took 1.5 hours during commute traffic) because they could get us in sooner than Acorn Vet.

Dr. Tsai examined Nacho and drew blood and urine. The tests came back negative for diabetes and negative for a urinary tract infection. So, I ended bringing him back today during Edgar's acupuncture appointment for an additional blood test. Oh goodness!

Our other 4 cats have been relatively healthy, but I needed to bring them in to establish care at Acorn Vet. It was too difficult to get appointments for all of them on the same day, so I was at Acorn Vet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!

Gina, our 17 year old black and white barn cat is doing great. Dr. Kirsch was very impressed at how healthy and spry Gina looked. Gina's bloodwork all came back normal, including her kidneys. Usually old cats show signs of kidney disease. We stopped feeding her dry kibble a long time ago and she only eats canned food and the occasional mice that she catches.

Maggie, our 14 year old calico cat is also doing great. We found out that she's got only one tooth left! Dr. Chang got a kick out of meeting such a cute and friendly cat.

The twins, Mickey and Minnie, our 8 year old grey tabby cats needed their vaccines updated. Dr. Siguig heard heart murmurs in both cats, but we will just monitor for now.

Changing vets has been difficult, after seeing the same vets for over 20 years. But it has been fun and refreshing to meet new healthcare providers for our sanctuary animals.

So, now we wait to see what's going on with Nacho Cat! Let's hope for the best!

All these veterinary appointments with the tests and vaccines amounted to $1783.94.

Any help with covering these bills would be greatly appreciated! 😻

Edgar got his monthly session of acupuncture, chiropractic adjustment and laser therapy. He's got a sore right hip. So this all helps to keep him comfortable and in motion.

Thank you Dr. Tsai for treating our big lug!

As much as it feels like controlled chaos here, we do have a routine for the animals.

Dogs thrive on routine.

Abby knows to go into her outdoor kennel and to 'place' on her bed in order to get fed.

Today, she's eating raw chicken necks, Ollie turkey mixture, fish capsules and Golden Paste ( turmeric, coconut oil and black pepper).

What a good girl!!
