Merry Christmas from Cake and Elliott!

These two handsome seniors are from the Rescue Class of 2024.

We rescued Elliott from the Wake County Animal Shelter in North Carolina. Unbeknownst to us, the mass growing on Elliott's side was a cancerous mass - soft tissue sarcoma! But thanks to your generous we had the mass removed and followed up with electrochemotherapy and Vitamin C infusion therapy to give Elliott the best chance at beating the cancer.

Elliott continues to thrive under our care and will have a follow up appointment with his oncologist in a few weeks.

We rescued Cake him the Pima Animal Care Center in 2024. He reminded me very much of sweet Teddy, an Australian Cattle Dog who instantaneously became my shadow as soon as I picked him up from the Sacramento Front Street Shelter in 2016. Barely three years later, we lost Teddy to hemangiosarcoma.

When I saw Cake's shelter picture, his soft eyes and his sideways Cattle Dog sit drew me to him. I just knew he would be perfect... a "perfect dog".

Both of these boys were most likely overlooked at the shelter because of their age and their looks... and for Elliott, his health issues. But we saw something special in both boys and welcomed them to our sanctuary in 2024 and they have both thrived under our care.

This is their second Christmas with us and it's such a gift to have them in our lives!

Merry Christmas from Cake and Elliott!!

Goats in coats! Stinky and Topaz look adorable in their new coats by AniMac.
Sadie wouldn't wear hers, so Mango is wearing it.

These coats cover their sides better than the Weatherbeeta dog jackets. And they have double straps to make them more secure.

Mango is loving her new ranch life. She's right there next to me as I do chores. She doesn't understand why she's not allowed to go in, so she whines a bit as she waits for me.

She did chase a rooster the other day. So, there's more for her to learn as she settles in!

Thank you for your generous donations that allow us to take in a variety of animals.. from goats to dogs - they get to call us their forever home!

Merry Christmas!

When Henry, our "Food Thief" Golden Retriever passed away in March 2024, his death left a huge hole in my heart. Because from 1984 to 2024, I had at least one Golden Retriever in my life.

It all started with my late stepfather giving me 'Sunshine', a Golden Retriever pup as a Valentine's Day present in 1984, when I was just ten years old. Sunshine was there with me from elementary school to my college years. My first dog. She left quite an impression on me and I knew I would always want a Golden Retriever in my life.

A few months later, Sunshine returned as another Golden Retriever and we named her Sunny. (That's a whole other wild story to be told at another time. ) Then a few years later, we were given Lucky. He was a Golden Retriever who was no longer wanted because of a divorce.

In 2006, Vince and I married with Sunny as our flower girl and Lucky as our ring bearer. Unfortunately, Lucky was later diagnosed with lymphoma and he passed in 2010.

During Lucky's chemotherapy treatments, Vince and I would wait around and have lunch nearby. We befriended Jason, the sushi chef and he became interested in Golden Retrievers. And much to our surprise, Jason later purchased a puppy despite his long work hours.

After Lucky passed away, Jason reached out to us and asked us to take in Henry. About a year later, Sunny passed away and that left us with just Henry.

Despite all of our dogs and other sanctuary animals....I have been secretly wanting another Golden Retriever. But everyone wants one and they're rarely ever in any shelter for very long.

Big sigh. Another Christmas without a token Golden Retriever in our lives. Or so I thought!!

So, last Wednesday morning at about 4am, as I was working in dispatch - I had the sudden urge to look for an animal. I was tired and just wanted to keep myself busy until my shift ended at 6am. I hopped on Craigslist and aimlessly searched for about 30 minutes.

It just didn't feel right and I didn't even know what I was looking for.

By 7am, I was home and exhausted. But the dogs were all excited to see me and I stayed up until almost 9a. As I put my phone on my nightstand, I saw that my father was calling me. I was too tired to take his call and did not answer.

He followed up with a text and a picture of the rear end of a Golden Retriever. My father speaks primarily Vietnamese, but also enough English for me to understand the basics.

It looked like a Golden Retriever in his text!!

From what I could understand, my father told me that he knew someone who didn't want his dog anymore. And that's it. That urge I so strongly felt just hours before... this was what I was looking for.

Then it a was a flurry of calls and texts to my mom (to help translate), Vince (to tell him I'm flying down to LA), Kara (my friend who lives in SoCal and ask her to go evaluate the dog on Thursday) and to Nanci ( to ask for a ride to the airport).

As luck would have it, my super busy friend Kara (she's helped us pick up Kovi, Eddy, Cheech and Tommy) was going to be in area of the dog because she had a dentist appointment that day. What are the chances?!!

So last Thursday, Kara dropped by and visited Mango and she tried to speak to the owner to get more information about Mango. When Kara asked if Mango was fixed - there was a language barrier - but the owner replied that Mango was "a virgin". 🤣

And with that.. I flew down to LA on Friday afternoon and picked up Mango at 6pm. All I could ascertain was that she's 4 years old and it's uncertain if she's ever been vaccinated or been seen by a veterinarian. The owner explained he didn't have time for her anymore and he wanted her to go to a good home.

Mango took one look at me, jumped in my rental car and never looked back. I made a pit stop at Porto's to grab some of their delicious pastries. I shared a few bites with Mango along the way and by 230am on Saturday.... Mango was officially a Lucky One.

And that's the story of how Mango came to us!

Vince and I returned to Merchant and Main for dinner again tonight.
The moment we sat down, our server, Candace, recognized us immediately. She smiled and said she was genuinely glad to see us. There was a reason for that.

Our previous visit had been a bit… unusual.

During last Monday's dinner, Candice had checked on us more than once because another patron had unexpectedly joined our table.

A young man in his 30s was dining alone at the table next to us. When we sat down, he noticed my bright pink Duluth overalls and complimented me. One comment turned into a conversation, and before long, he was talking openly with two complete strangers.

He had come in alone after a stressful day, just wanting to unwind with a good meal. But it was clear he was carrying more than hunger. A dentist had missed the cause of his tooth pain. At work, he was frustrated by the apathy around him, coworkers who no longer seemed to care.

It all weighed on him, and he needed somewhere for it to land.

He talked through most of our meal.
I didn’t mind at all.

He didn’t know that Vince and I both work in law enforcement. He didn’t know that listening - really listening - is literally my job as a police dispatcher. But that night, he just saw us as two regular people who were willing to have a conversation with him.

He just needed someone to hear him.

Tonight, Candice asked if we knew that young man. I told her we didn’t. But I also told her that I believe we were placed at that table for a reason.

Especially this time of year, people get lonely. They need connection. They need to be heard. And sometimes, the only thing you can give someone is your time.

Candice’s eyes filled with tears.

She understood then....our purpose that night wasn’t dinner that night.

It was listening to someone who needed to be heard.

Merry Christmas everyone.
Be the good.

Our handsome"Wayward" affectionately called Wayway!

Wish you could see and feel how soft and shiny his fur has become. He rolled in horse 💩 the other day, so he got another professional grooming on Friday!

Wayway is one of four dogs that we rescued this year.

Although he's not blind in the traditional sense, his dry eye condition is affecting his vision. The veterinary ophthalmologist believes he can only see shadows.

You'd never realize he has any vision issue, except for the daily gunk that accumulates in his eyes, especially the left one.

We took in WayWay after losing our beloved blind heeler, Stevie who had oral melanoma. Many of our dogs are connected with ones who have passed on.

We're so grateful that with your donations, we could rescue WayWay in Stevie's honor!

Merry Christmas WayWay!
