Kennel Cough (Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex) is going around the valley! If your dog has been around other dogs in the last 2 weeks and now has a honking/gagging/retching cough they may have kennel cough. If they are eating, drinking and have a normal activity level we recommend supportive care at home as most pets will improve on their own within 2 weeks.

Keep them well hydrated and make sure they are eating. Allow them to rest. You can use a cool mist humidifier in the room two or three times daily for 20-30 minutes to give them relief from the dry winter air.

Please do not take your infected pet around other dogs (dog parks, groomer, boarding, pet stores) until they have stopped coughing for 2 weeks to help prevent the spread of kennel cough. Most dogs will recover within 1-2 weeks with supportive care.

Should my dog be seen by a vet? Watch for the following issues and contact us if you have concerns:
*Not eating or drinking
*Severe lethargy
*Yellow or green discharge from the eyes or nose
*Cough lasting longer than 2 weeks (especially if the cough is worsening rather than gradually improving)
*Coughing fits so severe that your pet is having problems resting
*Your dog has a serious underlying health issue (like heart or lung disease or being on medication that suppress the immune system, etc) that may mimic symptoms of kennel cough or complicate their recovery

Be aware there are confirmed reports of fatal cases of avian Influenza transmitted to cats through raw food. Pets that consume any type of raw poultry, milk and (potentially) beef are at risk.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) yesterday reported that a house cat has died from H5N1 avian flu after eating raw frozen pet food, which has prompted the voluntary recall of raw pet food that was sold nationwide through distributors in 12 states as well as in British Columbia.
