We grow food on roofs - converting neglected spaces into viable sources of income and environmental safeguards. We create spaces for communities to interact with and learn about food, in order to establish agriculture as a fixture of city life.

Each month we highlight and offer a few specialty crops at our harvest tables. June’s crops were garlic and head lettuce. Both of these crops prefer cooler temps and thrive in the spring and early summer before temperatures get too hot!

Check out the APTA Garden! Opened in April of 2024, the garden is integrated into the existing planters on the rooftop patio. It’s planted with greens and veggies such as kale, peppers, eggplant, and collard greens and self-pick herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and oregano. Not only is it beautiful landscaping, but it also provides produce for tenants to enjoy!

It’s officially harvest season at Up Top! Each week our farmers harvest produce from the gardens and set it up for building tenants to enjoy. We might be biased but we think it’s a pretty cool office amenity!

Meet Nick! Nick has been farming for the last decade in a variety of locations and scales. Prior to entering the farming field, Nick was a green building engineer and LEED accredited professional and has consulted for a number of food system startup companies. He has an engineering degree from Vanderbilt University, a masters in Applied Economics from GW, and is an alumnus of the CASFS (Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems) organic farmer training program at UC Santa Cruz.

Garden spotlight on World Bank IFC! All of the produce grown here is distributed to to help provide food to families experiencing food insecurity. We grow a variety of crops here including kale, collards, peppers and eggplants. Additionally we’ve planted sunflowers and other annual flowers to create a thriving habitat for pollinators!

Returning for its second season, the garden at 2112 Penn is shaping up to be as bountiful as it is colorful. The Monarch Waystation habitat has come back to life with milkweed emerging from the soil, joining annual flowers like California poppy, statice, and strawflower to feed pollinators of all kinds. And, with over 300 linear feet dedicated to growing vegetables on this roof, 2112 Penn harvest tables this season will be filled with tons of fresh veggies and herbs for tenants to enjoy again this year!

We worked with many buildings to help engage their tenants around Earth Month! One of the most popular activities was seedling planting, where guests got to plant their own kitchen herb to bring home to hone their green thumb!

In 2023 we were able to grow over 14,000 pounds of produce across our farms! This produce is distributed to building tenants, or donated to local organizations working to reduce food insecurity. We’re happy to be able to grow so much food in cities, and distribute it hyperlocally.

Meet farmer Charlotte! Charlotte is a native of the DMV. Her love of nature and interest in preservation through sustainability brought her to Up Top Acres in 2023. She has previous experience in commercial property management which peaked her interest in green practices in the commercial realm. She is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned a degree in Business Administration & Management and was a University Honors Graduate. Say hi when you see her around town!

Next Earth Month highlight! In 2023 we grew, harvested and distributed over 165,000 servings of produce! The produce we grow is distributed to tenants of the building where the food was grown, or donated to local nonprofits working to combat food insecurity.

Spotlight on the Garden at 800 17th Street! Opened in 2023 this rooftop garden is planted with greens, fruiting a crops, culinary herbs and flowers. This planting mix supplies the building with locally produced food as well as habitat for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial species for local biodiversity.

April is Earth Month so we’re highlighting some of the impact we make at Up Top Acres! We’ve transformed over 4 acres of urban space into productive farms and gardens. These gardens offer a host of benefits, including producing food, capturing stormwater, and providing habitat for pollinators.

Meet farmer Hunter! Hunter has been cultivating his passion for gardening since 2015. Hunter served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zambia for three years, where he worked closely with community members to promote nutrition-focused gardens. After returning to the States, Hunter plugged into DC’s sustainability and agriculture community by getting involved in compost initiatives and occasional Up Top Acres farm installations. He joined the team full time in 2022 as a Farm and Operations Manager after working as a project manager at a DC-based nonprofit for several years. Say hi when you see him around town!

Meet the farmers! Up next is James, who joined the Up Top team last spring. He is relishing the upcoming radish season when he can make all kinds of fun things like pesto and taco toppings. Spotlight on the Garden at EDENS! This greenroof garden has rows of crops separated by rows of sedum, creating a very vibrant green space. In 2023, the garden provided over 12,000 servings of produce!
