The last pug in our care has just been formally adopted! With this adoption, NIPRA will formally cease operations on December 31, 2023. We would like to thank all of our adopters, fosters, volunteers, and supporters over the years. We couldn’t have done it without you. In the 20+ years of rescuing pugs we met so many amazing people and made so many friends. More than 1000 pugs were rescued and rehomed. We’re so glad that we were able to be part of so many happy stories and we’re very proud of what we accomplished.

HAPPY NATIONAL PUG DAY!!

Today we bring to you....Odie! 16 year old Odie joined the NIPRA family in April 2021. Odie was very loved by his former owner but unfortunately, she was elderly and wound up in the hospital with some serious health issues so she was no longer in a position to care for him. Odie loves to eat and will show his excitement before every meal so it was not really surprising that Odie was a little bit chunky when he moved into his foster home. And even though he’s 16 years old and his eye sight is not that great, Odie loves to walk around exploring the house and the yard! He especially likes to snuggle with his foster parents. Odie is on joint supplements due to age related arthritis and his bloodwork was out of the normal range for several markers (liver, kidneys, WBC count, etc). We’ve done an ultrasound and a Cushings test for Odie and both have come back normal so our next step is to do a test for Addison’s disease. In spite of this, Odie really is a very happy boy. He continues to enjoy life and especially those meals 😊

Your donations make it possible for us to continue to support elderly/hospice pugs like Odie. If you would like to help with Odie’s care, please consider making a donation to NIPRA: http://northernillinoispugrescue.org/support/donations/

Meet Wrigley Ann! Wrigley who is now close to 15 years old had been adopted thru NIPRA but was returned to us six years later after her family had a baby and no longer had time for her. Wrigley has spent the last two years with a dedicated and amazing long-term foster family where she is being treated like a little princess and given the special care she needs – she has arthritis and bladder issues. But, as long as Wrigley stays on her meds and special food, she does great. Wrigley's foster family give her massages with a special cream for her arthritis at night and she gets regular laser therapy too. We're looking into adding acupuncture to help Wrigley too. Wrigley likes to snuggle and she likes it when her foster mom rocks her like a baby. Like most pugs, her appetite is very good! Her foster humans have to watch her diet to make sure she doesn’t gain any weight which would not be ideal with her arthritis. Due to her age, mobility issues from arthritis and special needs, Wrigley will be staying in NIPRA’s care for the rest of her life. Wrigley is due for her annual vet visit and bloodwork in September. If you would like to help support Wrigley, please consider making a donation to NIPRA.

Meet KimChi. She is a 9 1/2 year old female pug that was originally adopted from NIPRA in 2017 and then returned to us in August 2020 due to house training issues. Upon her arrival back into rescue, a visit to our vet revealed that KimChi was actually diabetic and that was the reason that she was drinking and peeing so much. Her foster parents have been working diligently over the past year to try and get her diabetes and other senior pug health issues under control.

A few weeks ago, KimChi's foster mom could tell that she was not feeling well and rushed her to the emergency vet. KimChi was in ketoacidosis (a dangerous side effect of her diabetes). She spent several days in the hospital where they were thankfully able to get her stabilized and she is now back home.

Unfortunately that hospital stay was nearly $6,000 and NIPRA is now dangerously low on funds. We are only able to continue to support KimChi and our other hospice pugs with your help. Any donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated and very much needed. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to spotlight some our other hospice pugs so that you can see firsthand the precious souls that you are supporting.
