Yzma learning to get on the vet's exam table on her own

Today was the first day Yzma went to the vet with me since I adopted her. She was unsure about getting up on the table and we spent a few minutes buiding her confidence up. It did mean we had to hold up the exam by a minute or two but it's worth it. I managed to get her to place her 2 front feet up there herself and I rewarded her with a happy YES! and then helped lift her back end up. This video was taken AFTER her exam was over while we waited for the results of her heartworm test. Now you can see she was able to get up there on her own over and over again. By the end of the visit she was jumping up on the exam table even without being prompted. Teaching our dogs to give consent to these types of situations is very important. Yzma is a year and a half and was able to learn this in just a few minutes. Even dogs who have had bad vet visits can be worked with and taught to trust and tolerate going to the vet with some work.

Today John Boy tagged along with Yzma to the vet visit. he didn't need to go but it was good practice for him to go see the vet at a time when he was only an observer. I want my dogs to be ok going to the vet as it is an important part of their life. Here we are practicing getting on and off the exam table on his own. Teaching our dogs to get on the exam table themselves is a way of giving them control of their surroundings and by getting on the table themselves they are giving their consent to the exam.

Angelo’s (black dog) dog siblings are so glad we have other dogs here to play with them. Giving them a much needed break from his seemingly endless amounts of energy. Dozer and Angelo have been out together for hours and Dozer (white and brindle dog) is wearing down. He is 5 years old compared to Angelo’s 6-8 months old.

Angelo is the 🐕‍🦺 Dozer is the white and brindle dog 🐶 Yzma is the brindle boxer 🐕 Nova is the giant dog Angelo is around 7-8 months and he’s bigger than most adult dogs but he’s all puppy! He doesn’t know when to take no for an answer and he doesn’t have much of an off switch where his energy is concerned lol Yzma is new to this kind of thing and is still working on her body language too. Dozer is a well practiced in dog body language and when to intercede and when not to. He’s also good at being just enough when it’s time to intercede. Dozer is a retired “dog therapist” and used to work with dogs at shelters. Nova is just big and the boss lol
