Savoy Singers Aviary My personal journey keeping canaries! Sharing canary information about breeding and caring for the But the FUN side is so valuable also!
(11)

I began my bird 'venture' because I loved canaries... little did I know how MUCH I loved them! There are so many benefits from owning a canary: a whole room full or a single singing companion! I enjoy the serious side: studying genetics and inheritance, while evaluating and judging the youngsters every year. Interacting with other breeders has given me a great respect for quality and the goal

of constant improvement in my own aviary. Canaries each have individual personalities, and also family inherited traits. Each bird is unique in many ways. I love to talk about canaries, with both novice and experienced breeders as well as with the person who just wants a satisfying companion to share his/her days with!

The Columbia Canary Club show is October 26, 2024!!! This will also be a National Finch and Softbill Society affiliated show, National Colorbred Association (NCA) affiliated show, as well as an IFFCA International Fife Fancy Club of America affiliated show! There will also be a Cascade Budgerigar Society Show in Cascade Hall at the same time/day! There will be sales tables and CCC Club members and officers to meet. Don't forget the birds: canaries, finches, sofbills, small hookbills, and the budgies.
A PDF of the show catalog with all the classes, info on the hotel, judges, schedule of entry, judging, and more, is on the website:

The CCC Annual Bird Show and Sale is typically held in late October and includes a judged show,  sales of canaries, finches, doves, quails, small hookbills, and supplies.  In addition, there are raffles for various items, both bird related and otherwise!  Whether you are interested in showing, se...

Did you ever have a decision that you wished you had made earlier??? Here is a product that I feel is the second best investment in my bird room! (The best investment was top quality stock birds!) This air purifier has a hefty price tag..., almost seemed impossible. even impractical! NOT SO! This will prove/has proven to be a life saver. There are respiratory issues in my family tree, and I was beginning to feel a bit scratchy throated while in the bird room, and the air felt 'heavy'. I have always used an air purifier or cleaner near the birds. And several years ago, I began using two units in the bird room, and one outside the door. And they collected the white dander well... how often the blinds needed cleaning and the surfaces dusted definitely was less when the purifiers were running 24/7. I used several upright Honeywells and the pet versions of the Hamilton Beach purifiers. I liked both... both seemed to do their jobs... UNTIL I put up a RabbitAir! Wow, huge difference! Absolutely no effect on my breathing/throat/lungs in the bird room. No one notices any odor or dust outside the bird room. Almost no dusting in the bird room. I still cannot believe the difference. My bird room goes through various stages of 'debris on the floor' depending on the ranch work, but I think cleanliness has an important place in my health as well as the birds. I feel I am 'average' to 'above average' on bird room cleaning. Right now, I feel a good air purifier is a worthwhile purchase even for perfect housekeepers. Our own health as long term bird keepers is something you can't put a price on.
So, just what is the best air purifier? As I said, I was happy with the more affordable models. Definitely do some shopping around, maybe even trying several different brands. My testing was limited. I personally preferred the Hamilton Beach design in the under $100 range. I liked the Winix design in the under $200 range. But they don't compare to the performance of the RabbitAir MinusA2, which is in the $600 price range.
All this depends upon number of birds, room ventilation, and other factors of course!
One important thing to remember is ROOM COVERAGE each purifier is rated for. Go larger rather than smaller. I am linking to the RabbitAir explanation of Room Coverage.

What is Room Coverage Room coverage is determined by Air Changes Per Hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean a room in one hour. For example, 2 air changes per hour shows that an air purifier can clean a room once every 30 minutes. An allergy and as...

Just a head's up about a cage deal that might be perfect for someone! I have used these Clean Life cages, and they do keep 'SOME' of the mess to a minimum. The cage bottom/sides and tray are definitely easier to clean than some cages. Size and type may not suit everyone... I myself no longer use these individual cages except when I have a singer somewhere in the house outside the bird room. But I have used these cages and I liked them. This is a decent price! Plus Chewy currently has a deal for a $30 gift card for every $100 purchase. :) Each color has a different price

Updated... as this is the season we often see SEED MOTHS.
I want to stress that traps for Seed Moths are slightly better than traps for Pantry Moths. Both will attract and catch the pesky, persistent flying pests, but the pheromone bait is slightly different for the different species of moth. Often, the moths we see in our closets are indeed Pantry or Seed Moths, but there is a larger moth actually called a Closet or Clothes Moth. Web search results will show you photos of the different species.

This is the time of year I have problems with seed moths, if I am not careful. To avoid these annoying pests: keep your bird room clean and keep your seed/food in airtight containers. The SEED itself and DEBRIS are the main sources of an infestation... and an INVASION they can be!

Several years ago, I wasn't too concerned when I saw the first couple of moths, and soon they were throughout the ENTIRE house! .... In the kitchen cupboards, flying around the living room (drawn to the warmth of the tv ?) and even in the far bathroom!!!!
>>> MOST SEED/GRAINS in our cage bird feed are harvested in a summer/fall season... that is just the nature of a growing crop. SEED I am feeding now in the spring HAS BEEN IN STORAGE somewhere for 7 to 10 months, at a minimum!

Montana canary people: is anyone interested in a source in our state for a canary seed mix? The rising cost of shipping is doubling the cost of my seed mix! I am working with someone in Billings for a cheaper way to get canary mix. She asked how much I or others may want??? She will store the seed until we call to pick up throughout the year.
I have no final price yet and you are under no obligation to buy. But I am very excited by this possibility!!! Please PM for more information!

30/04/2024

Update on the H5N1 Avian Bird Flu and a reminder of basic biosecurity in our backyard poultry AND our indoor bird rooms! The H5N1 Virus has been in the news recently, when it was announced it has been confirmed in dairy herds in various states spread across the US.
Summary for our indoor canaries: 1) Keep a separation between INDOORS and OUTDOORS. This means if you go to the park, or other area where there may be wild birds or mammals shedding infected droppings, DO NOT go into your bird room upon returning home without changing clothing and washing your face and hands. 2) Be careful not to touch a dead outdoor bird without gloves or protecting your hands outside a plastic bag for disposal. 3) Do not store food or supplies in an area exposed to domestic or wild animals such as cats who may have come into contact with an infected wild bird. 4) Do not use an outdoor or unknown water source for use by indoor birds for either drinking or bathing. 5) If possible, limit visitors to your bird room. This includes both other bird owners and pet mammals. 6) Be aware of any local outbreaks in the wild avian and mammal populations. If there are none reported locally, your risks will be less, of course.
"Infected birds shed avian influenza viruses in their saliva, mucous, and f***s. Other animals infected with avian influenza viruses might have viruses in respiratory secretions, blood, and other fluids including animal milk, and organ tissues such as the brain. Therefore, animals infected with avian influenza viruses can contaminate the environment they are living in with avian influenza viruses. Human infections with avian influenza viruses are rare, but they can happen when virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, or is inhaled. This can happen when viruses are in the air (in droplets or small particles, and possibly dust) and are deposited in the eyes or breathed in by a person, or possibly when a person touches something contaminated by avian influenza viruses and then touches their mouth, eyes, or nose. Most often these infections have occurred after unprotected contact with infected birds but can occur after exposure to other animals known or suspected to be infected with avian influenza viruses." Just a reminder that BIRD FLU is still around and to be respected! These are statistics of 2024! I am including a couple of interesting pages of information that show the range of it's impact... wow, just looking at the HUGE numbers of domestic poultry that has been on premises with positive tests (meaning flocks were destroyed) and the number of states across the nation with positive birds in 2024..... was a sobering reminder that we need to be cautious and careful with our precious indoor birds as well. My best advice, that I am taking to heart, is to be careful when entering our bird rooms, or tending our birds. Since I live on a ranch, where wild waterfowl frequent, nest, and live during the year, AND I have a poultry flock to protect... and don't want to infect myself or my birds.... I am taking this serious. The following first TWO actions are most important:
#1) I have an OUTDOOR set of shoes and an INDOOR set of shoes. I may go so far as to wear a set of coveralls when I am away from the immediate vicinity of the house. My mother in law did that just to be easier on her favorite clothes.
#2) I try to eliminate/discourage wild birds from roosting/nesting/feeding in the areas that my chickens use. This also means no bird feeders in my backyard!!! No bird baths, no feeders as I don't want to come into contact with their droppings.
Put screens in the attic windows/vents of your chicken houses/barns.
Feed pans and water pans go INSIDE the coop to discourage the wild birds from visiting the pans.
#3) I will open windows to the bird room as usual, but we don't have trees near, and I usually open only on still/windless, dustfree days. There are not many wild birds near our house.
#4) I have a Rabbitaire air cleaner... which I feel does a great job for alot of things... and it is a larger model that means it changes the air in my bird room quite often.
Number 1 and 2 are most important.

Captain was my son's parakeet years ago. Captain used to walk down the branch on the top of his cage until he was close to Hubby's shoulder and squawk at him. Hubby would cuss at him to "Shut up, you noisy bird!" Captain would cuss right back. Captain loved this daily exchange... Hubby not so much!

INSTRUCTIONS: Watch the Keith Ferry episodes to find the items below. You may find one or all three. Send your answers in a Private Message to Savoy Singers Aviary. You may find one or all three. For every correct answer found, your name will be entered in a random drawing for your choice of prize. You may enter until midnight on Tuesday, November 7th.

Treasure Hunt answers can be found in three of The Canary Room’s episodes with Keith Ferry. The playlist is Breeding and Keeping Norwich Canaries. The three ‘treasures’ you are looking for are below, with a few clues and hints. (YouTube Channel link in comments.) 👇👇👇

FIRST is an answer to this question:
Mr. Ferry gives credit to which two people for pointing him in the right direction forward to improving the qualities of his Fife?
This is a bit of a trick question! Listen carefully, as he also mentions the names of breeders whose birds were his foundation stock; we are not looking for those names.
HINT: One of the men is currently in the USA for this weekend!!! Look for this answer in the episode uploaded TODAY, November 5th.

SECOND is an answer to this question:
Why are Mr. Ferry’s plastic perches upside down?
HINT: This episode from Season 5 also demonstrates hand washing birds.

THIRD is a word or words that complete this sentence:
“If they are _____ . then you know that they are fit. If a bird doesn’t (same word), it could be a sign of thinking there may be something wrong.” (Same word) is one of the ways Mr. Ferry keeps his birds fit over the winter.
HINT: The title of the episode is Part 1 Preparation for Breeding, but he begins by talking about how he keeps his birds fit over the winter. ‘Preparing for breeding begins 12 months earlier, really starts from the birds in the nest.”
