Training is essential for the K9s of the United States Coast Guard. K9 Ricky and his handler trained to operate in various conditions, whether on a ferry, at the pier, or being hoisted from a helicopter on to a boat.

Tomorrow is our last flight of 2023! Thanks to the amazing support of all our donors, sponsors, and partners this year we have been able to fly over 4.l,300 homeless pets out of overcrowded shelters and to forever homes! 4,300 lives saved thanks to you!

Our job is far from over unfortunately. 2023 saw a record number of owner surrenders and lower than usual adoption numbers. But we're not giving up! Working hard to expand our Operation Pit Stop and five flights already scheduled for the new year, 2024 looks to be our best year yet!

Though both breeds look identical, plenty separates the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd throughout their lineages.

My name is Iiken M090 and I am a retired SSD Military Working Dog. I am living the life of luxury right now but earlier, I worked hard. I was born on June 4, 2006 and was raised to be in the puppy program at Lackland, AFB. I was so friendly; it was suggested that I be part of the SSD program. I went to Ft. Drum, NY and met my new Army handler. We deployed together to Afghanistan. We were not in country too long when our vehicle ran over an IED. My handler and I were both wounded and had to be medevacked out. Everyone was very worried about my lungs and hindquarters. After a few surgeries and lots of TLC, I was finally cleared to work again. I had to be retrained and was then transferred from the Army to the Marine Corps in Okinawa. I had a few other handlers and was finally able to meet my favorite one, SSgt R. Miller. Together, we went to Korea, various training sites in Okinawa, and SSD school at Camp Lejeune. SSgt Miller then left Okinawa; and I had to stay behind. I missed him very much. My time as a Military Working Dog came to an end in the Fall of 2016. I was adopted by my new family, Palmer and Sharon Miller, they are Army Veterans, too. Guess what! They are the parents of SSgt Miller! I get to see him and his family on a regular basis. I have been retired for several years now and my favorite is a Wubba. That is how I was “paid” when I worked.

HHouston R058 is a PDDD who served seven years at Hill AFB in Utah. He deployed one time and supported multiple base agencies encounter narcotic missions during his career. Since retiring in 2017, HHouston has followed the family through a PCS, helped raise the family’s kids, and aided in fostering MWD DDesmond. During his retirement, HHouston has enjoyed his time with the family, enjoying road trips and insisting that everybody in the house tosses his Chuck it ball around for him.
