GRCA Health and Genetics Committee (H&G) Alert – Emergency Obstetrical Care Requiring Owners to Spay the Dam

The H&G has received multiple reports from GRCA members of veterinary facilities requiring spaying at the time of an emergency cesarian section. In addition, there is a shortage of emergency veterinary care facilities in many areas.

The H&G wants to alert breeders to this and urges breeders to discuss policies for whelping emergencies with the regular attending veterinarian and emergency facilities well in advance of delivery dates.

Please be aware that the policy of requiring a spay in order to receive emergency obstetrical care appears to be increasingly common and can vary among veterinarians on call within some practices.

The H&G strongly opposes this policy and is working with multiple partners to try and assure that veterinary decisions for obstetrical emergencies consider the best interests of the dam, the puppies, and the owner(s).
