Who’s excited that Strictly starts tonight?
WE ARE!
So what has Strictly Come Dancing got to do with dog training?
Actually, rather a lot!
You see, dogs learn in pictures and patterns. They read our body language very carefully and respond accordingly, this is why we start all of our training using hand signals rather than words.
I am frequently heard saying that training is something we do WITH our dogs, not TO our dogs.
Dog training is just like choreography, it is a partnership that relies on providing clear communication and teaching your doggy partner how to respond to that. Work on the basics first, make sure they’re rock solid, then gradually make your requests more complicated at a pace that the dog can maintain. Speaking louder, or in a threatening tone, creates stress which actually impairs learning.
So next time you find yourself sounding Strict, drop it and be more Strictly!

Philosophical Doggy Question of the Day! 🤔
In dog training, when we're seeking to change a behaviour we must first look at context and environment. All behaviour serves a purpose, it doesn't happen in a void. Barking is natural. If we have problem barking we need to work out how to change the dog's environment or their perception of what is causing it. It is not enough to just focus on the behaviour itself, that is why you'll never hear us advocate for spray bottles, shaker cans, citronella collars or electric shocks!
Tell us in the comments, what makes your dog bark?
With a dog the world is a playground. Mr Bones is all about creating value in calm behaviour by rewarding it with natural, fun, energetic behaviours. Mr Bones says "Lose the Lobber!"
Relentlessly lobbing a ball can lead to all sorts of physical and behavioural problems. Take a look at our blog (link below) to see why it can have the opposite effect of what most dog parents expect. Leo here is demonstrating beautifully how a ball can be used constructively to teach all sorts of great behaviours. We can help your dog be more Leo!
