Is your dog getting too many treats? 🧐

✅ It's advisable to keep the proportion of dog treats and chew bones within the diet moderate. Our recommendation is that they should make up less than 10% of your dog's daily food intake. For small breeds or growing puppies, this percentage can easily be exceeded. Especially dry and high-protein treats, such as dried fillets, if given in excess, can dehydrate the body and even strain the kidneys.

✅ It’s important to ensure that your dog gets the correct amount of food daily – so do not replace complete food with treats. This ensures a nutritious diet and helps keep your dog at an ideal weight. If you give your dog homemade food or bites from the plates of two-legged family members, remember moderation there too, especially with foods that are fatty or contain salt and spices.

Did you know that offering wet food alongside dry food can help with your dog's weight management? Wet dog food contains water, which is why it is portioned more than dry food. A larger portion size can improve the dog's feeling of fullness. One deciliter of dry food corresponds to about two deciliters of wet food.

With wet food and dog sausages, you can easily diversify your dog's diet. You can mix wet food with dry food or give wet food in the morning and dry food in the evening, for example. All our wet foods and sausages are complete foods, so you can safely replace dry food portions with them. 😊

🔎 High-quality dog food contains adequate protein and sufficient animal fat. Ensure that the first ingredient listed is either meat or fish. The suitable protein content in dry food for dogs is usually about 25–30%.

It's not advisable to frequently change your dog's food, especially if the dog hasn't been accustomed to a variety of foods from a young age. Even a couple of weeks may not be sufficient for a dog to adapt to a new food, so give your canine friend plenty of time to adjust.

Switching to another food within the same brand often goes smoothly, as the quality of the dog food remains consistent. However, if the reason for changing your dog's food is due to digestive issues, for example, it's worth trying a significantly different type of food. If your dog has previously been eating dry food containing chicken and rice, consider trying a completely grain-free dog food with a different protein source. 💡

Some dogs don't tolerate grains well. Here are some common symptoms of an unsuitable diet:
😖 The dog experiences heartburn, indicated by frequent swallowing, licking lips, attempting to eat large amounts of grass, or licking floors or paws.
💩 The dog frequently has diarrhoea or, conversely, constipation.
👃 The dog passes gas.
💩 The dog's stool is often slimy or loose.
😓 The dog has itchy skin or other skin symptoms, such as rashes and recurrent infections in the ears or paws.

These signs are also indicative of other food allergies and sensitivities. To make PrimaDog's grain-free dog food suitable for as many sensitive dogs as possible, we have chosen only well-tolerated and easily digestible sources of protein for our grain-free dry foods, such as deer, turkey, duck, and herring. We have designed our new packaging to help you quickly spot the perfect pick for your furry friend on the store shelves. Clear icons detail the product features, colour coding separates the various flavour options, and the packaging clearly shows if the product is for example for a puppy or an adult dog. Our dry food bags still come with handy features like a resealable closure and a carrying handle for the larger bags 👌

From now on, you can find our dry food in either 3kg or 10kg bags. The exception to this is the grain-free PrimaDog Active Duck & Herring dry food designed for active dogs, which we will start selling exclusively in larger 10kg bags.

We kept the dry food recipes that your dog’s stomach loves just the way they are. So, pick up your trusted kibble in its new package from your local grocery store!

Can a dog eat only dry food? 🤔 We at PrimaDog recommend a varied diet for dogs, based on a good complete food, such as dry food. Wet food, dog sausages, meat, fish and eggs are excellent additions to a dog's diet.

The different compositions also allow for a variety of enrichment and activities to be provided in everyday life. Smear wet food on a lickimat or freeze it in an activation toy, hide the kibble in a tissue paper tube, an activation mat or in a puzzle game for dogs – what other fun ways of feeding have you thought of?

How many treats can you give your dog?

This labrador thinks the treats should be endless 😁 However, our rule of thumb is that treats and chew bones should not account for more than 10% of your dog's daily energy needs.

So the size of the dog has a lot to do with when the treat quota is full. If your dog is of a small breed or on a weight-loss diet, check the labels of the treats you use and replace with lower-fat ones if necessary.
