We try to compost as much as we can, that includes chicken poo and bedding. 🐔🐣🐓 Our favorite "job" to give the chicken is compost rotators. We have created a chicken run that doubles as compost system. Using a deep litter method, all of their poo, food scraps, and bedding gets broken down with their help scratching and hunting for bugs. We put fresh straw or wood shavings down a few times a month, I rotate it every other month, then we take all the composted material out once a year. ♻️
Do you compost?
What questions do you have about composting? Have you ever heard of the deep litter method?
Dominic decided to wear his breakfast. It is a stylish look and a great way to save some for later.
Teamwork makes the dream work! 🌟 Thanks to the amazing collaboration between us, @frontstreetanimals, @tommystransportteam, and @goatlandia_sanctuary, these three goats found their happy ending! 🐐💕 From wandering in Sacramento to a goat sanctuary, we’re grateful for everyone who played a part in their rescue.
Our InAlliance volunteers are help brushing the goats thick winter coats out. We have a new volunteer, Julie, that enjoyed her first visit and meeting new furry friends.
InAlliance is a local program that helps connect people with disabilities to jobs or volunteer opportunities in their community. We have weekly volunteers from InAlliance that help do our morning chores like brushing goats.

Why are we collecting wet dirty straw?
We try to get as much organic matter as we can back into our soil. We compost everything we can here and even collect waste like cardboard, pumpkin, and straw from our community to help keep it out of the landfills
The animals work hard, helping us spread out the straw to help break it down quicker.
Unfortunately, Avian Flue numbers are on the rise again, and cases are popping up locally again. Our birds are back on lockdown. Not only do we hate this for our bird, but over 75 million birds have died from this Avian Flu. Most of them are birds from factory farms, but so many wild birds have suffered.
This was our 6 pack of ducks enjoying finding worm in the compost pile after a heavy rain a few weeks ago.

Help needed for Bambi! 💓
Bambi was rescued on 8/4 and not only tested positive for coccidia, a microscopic parasite in the intestinal tract, but we’ve discovered a bite wound on her leg that’s now abscessing. This little bunny is a FIGHTER. She was found all alone in the tall grass, separated from her litter. Now we know it’s likely due to being picked up by a predator!
The fact that she survived and is still fighting is truly a miracle. Bunnies are hardwired to mask any signs of illness or injury to protect themselves from predators. Now that we know the full story, she’s on antibiotics & antiprotozoals, her wounds are being flushed, and we’re keeping a close eye on her progress.
Sadly, these cases are not uncommon from the bunnies who were born or abandoned at the park. If you can help with the medical care for Bambi and the other 38 bunnies in our care, please donate! Even a small amount helps tremendously.

Only Sunshine Sanctuary on CBS13 Sacramento
Proud and grateful! 🙌 Thank you to CBS13 CBS Sacramento for highlighting our work rescuing over 100 bunnies at a park in Citrus Heights, CA. We've been working with City of Citrus Heights Animal Control on solutions to this bunny-dumping hotspot for two years now. Tonight, we presented these solutions at City Council, such as spay & neuter funding from Placer County and support from the city for rescue days. Two years of activism and bunny rescuing and two decades of bunny abandonment and our persistence is finally paying off!
Love knows no bounds, and neither do bunnies! 🐇💕 Today, Tulip, the sweet bunny who found her way back to us after her first adoptive home didn't work out, discovered her perfect match. Meet Cinnamon, a furry friend who traveled 5.5 hours from Crescent City, CA, just to find love. We played cupid, and it was love at first sight! Our sanctuary has become a bunny match-making service, spreading true love one hop at a time. 🌼❤️
Yesterday we said goodbye to Monte. Monte was the first of three rats we rescued in early 2021. They were all meant to be snake food, but luckily to them the snakes weren't hungry.
Rats usually have tough lives destined to be snake food or lab test subjects. Rats often get tumors later in their life as a result of their history of being lab test subjects. Rats are incredibly intelligent animals and can problem solve. They are social, love company, and have hierarchies.
Monte started to develop a tumor a few months ago and due to his age we decided to not have it removed. This week he started to not eat and have trouble getting around. We let him go at home surrounded by people who love him and be able to let his buddy Monsieur see him to help him grieve. Rats just don't live long enough💔
Neapolitan is teaching us the proper rooting techniques!
Look at all the holes he dug, clearly, he knows what he is doing.
Pig roots for different reasons, to cool off, for comfort, to eat yummy roots, to obtain iron from the soil. The soil, in most cases, contains enough iron for a pigs healthy diet and prevent anemia.
The food our pigs have enough iron and other essential nutrients for a healthy diet so iron from the soil isn't required. Why do you think Neapolitan loves to root?
This was our second segment with Gary from Fox 40 on Wednesday.
Thank you so much Fox40 and Gary for coming out Wednesday morning and spotlighting our little sanctuary.
We have been dedicated to this problem for 2 years now! We are in desperate need of fosters and donations to help with the 30 rabbits we currently have, many still need to be spayed/nuetered and vaccinated.
Any amount helps
