Ratty makes a friend...

Sitting here at the computer, under the ceiling fan (which is on at full speed) and, after a few minutes, Spunky comes out of nowhere and jumps up atop the back of my desk chair -- literally 3 feet beneath the whirling blades of the ceiling fan! I didn't even know Spunky was in the room.
It is so rewarding helping him to overcome his fears!
And, oh -- he just did it a 2nd time. Had my camera ready this time...

Are ya poopin'?
What is weirder than your cats calmly watching you poop?
How about being the one who is sitting on the toilet, pooping, and filming your cats as they watch you? lol
This is Ratty with my friend's cat, Chili, back in 2016. I loved how well Ratty and Chili got along. Wish Ratty and Spunky would get along this well. Then again, my other cat Shadow did NOT like Chili one bit (and did not hide the fact), so that gave Chili extra reason to bond with Ratty. Maybe that's the difference.
I guess it's not all that bad with Ratty and Spunky these days. They seem to get along most of the time. And they've never had a real big serious fight (like you see on "My Cat From Hell")...

Ratty Listens-In
At our old apartment, Ratty would get scared and hide when he heard the neighbors' voices outside. But these days, he sits at the doorway and eavesdrops as the neighbors gossip on the walkway below.
Not sure what to think. He's a brave boy for not hiding anymore, but then again, it's not really manly to be listening-in on your neighbors' gossip.
But then again, again -- he's a cat. And cats are sneaky. So eavesdropping is probably a very feline thing to do after all...

Ratty getting a bit more comfortable with the Roomba. Who knows -- maybe one day he WILL actually ride around on top of it.Still weird how Spunky is deathly afraid of it.
I used to think Spunky was the braver of the pair, but they both are brave/scared of different things. I think having Spunky around has made Ratty a bit more brave in certain areas.
As I write this, Spunky is hiding in the cupboards. He always hides in there when the Roomba starts-up.
The Roomba app allows me to name my vacuum. I named it "Mr Magoo" since it wanders around aimlessly bumping into things...

Ratty & the Roomba
Look out Ratty! It's coming for you!
This video from last December shows the cats' first encounter with Mr Magoo, the Roomba. Ratty wasn't as scared of it as I had expected.
Ratty is still getting used to it. He's pretty much non-plussed by it these days. Not really scared, but will walk away when it gets too close to him.
Spunky, however, is downright terrified of it. Spunky runs and hides in the other room whenever Mr Magoo comes out. He hasn't figured out that he will be safe if he simply jumps up onto my desk, or the cat tree, or the bed.
Neither cat has ridden it yet. I would ride it myself, to show them that it is okay, but I think that would crush it and void my warranty...

Friends at Last?
Spying on my cats from work, I spotted them cuddling together on my desk chair!
Might not be a big deal to you, but it makes me happy. Normally in this situation, as soon as Spunky jumped up onto the chair, Ratty would have ran over to the cat tree on the other side of the room, letting Spunky have the chair to himself. But this time he stayed, and they slept on the chair like that for over 4 hours!
Up until now, both cats have just kinda "tolerated" one another. Their friendship only got worse when I introduced the automatic cat feeders (with Ratty constantly stealing Spunky's food).
But now that I'm not working 12-hour shifts anymore, I'm back to feeding the cats, myself. Old-style. Like the Pilgrims did.
And ever since I stopped using the cat feeders, they have slowly started to warm back up to one another. At night, when I'm in the recliner, watching TV, I used to only have one cat at a time sitting with me (one would leave if the other jumped up). But now both cats watch "Reboot" with me from the recliner.
At least until I sneeze. Then they run for the hills...

Spunky Improvises
Spunky's previous owner told me that he was a total "lap cat." And she wasn't kidding! Even when I'm sitting at my desk, Spunky finds a way to improvise...

Moving Day
Moved to a new city. Spunky & Ratty wanted nothing to do with it. Quite a switch from my last video, when they bolted from their carriers after a trip to the vet.
This video was made 3 weeks ago. They're doing a lot better now. Still adjusting, though. I think they just want to go home.
Nothing really exciting in this video. Ratty eventually crawls out slowly, leaving Spunky behind. Despite this, Spunky seems to be adjusting a lot faster/better than Ratty. Makes sense, I guess. Spunky was owned by a little old lady who died last year. He then lived with the lady's daughter for the better part of a year. Then he was given to me. So this is his 4th home.
For Ratty -- all he knew his whole life was our previous apartment. So his world has turned upside-down.

Home from the Vet. Both cats doing great. Ratty had 6 teeth removed and Spunky lost 4. Now for a week of forcing pills down their throat. Yay!

Yes, every day is Meow Monday!
Video from 2014. Ratty (3 years old) watching his favorite TV show (that Honey Badgers thing, whatever it was called).
Actually, he's watching the MST3K guys spoofing the show; though I doubt he gets the joke...

Very tiny earthquake just now (about 30 miles away). First quake since Spunky came to live with us 11 months ago.
He was okay, but kinda nervous. I went into the bedroom (where he likes to hang out) to give him some attention. He normally excitedly jumps up onto the bed when I enter, but this time he refused.
Instead, he was sniffing around the entrance to his hidey-place, as if he was thinking about hiding.
His last owner told me that Spunky had a traumatic incident during a quake a few years ago, so his behavior is expected.
A bit later he started roaming around the apartment, carefully checking things out, as if he was looking to see that everything was still in place.
Poor kitty.
Ratty hates quakes, too. But due to the a/c being on (he either hates the noise or the cold breeze) he was already napping under the elliptical machine, so he didn't need a safe place to run to. He seems okay. Although it took about 30 minutes before he rested his head again.
If this was a normal (stronger) quake, both cats would be hiding for a few hours and I'd be able to sit at my computer and actually use my keyboard...
Saw a post where people shared photos of their dogs before and after telling them "you're a good boy." Each dog seemed to smile afterwards.
Then, as a joke, a few people shared photos of their cats after telling them "you're a good boy." And each cat seemed to mostly ignore them.
So I tried this out on my cats. Ratty didn't really react. Here's what happened with Spunky...

Over these past couple of weeks, Fred's energy level has really spiked. He loves to play with me, he loves to play "let's chase each other around the apartment" with Ratty, and he plays with a few select toys, as you can see in this video.
You can see one of his current favorite "toys" in this video -- the inner cardboard tube from an old roll of toilet paper. I thought he'd grow tired of after just a few hours, but it's been almost a week now and he still loves playing with it and pouncing on it.
Just out of frame is the $5 kicker toy I recently bought him (which he ignores in order to play with this free cardboard tube).
The other toy in this video is an old stuffed mouse toy that I bought years ago for Shadow + Ratty. It has some catnip inside of it (also many years old). This video was kinda "forced" in that I called him over and asked him to play with the toys. When he decides to play with them on his own, he gets way more into it than he does in this video.
I was surprised to see Fred suddenly playing with this mouse toy one day out of the blue. In the living room, one of the "condos" of the main cat tree is filled with various toys that Shadow and Ratty have played with over the years (and have mostly tired of). It's pretty much their "toy box." Fred must have been digging through those toys and chose the mouse to play with. The only toy so far that he's picked out on his own without me introducing him to it. Hope he does that some more.
Why do I hope he does that some more? Well, when he plays with me, he likes to use my hands and arms as "kicker toys" and "bitey toys." It doesn't hurt me when he does this, and the bites don't come close to breaking the skin, but I've read that this type of play only cements the notion in the cat's mind that hands and arms are fine to use as toys, and as time goes on the play can get more aggressive and eventually lead to flat-out aggressive behavior in general. So when you reach over to pet your cat, the
A quiet, lazy Sunday morning...

As I wait for Fred and Ratty to realize that they are best friends, I was reminded that back in 2015 it took Chili a long time to warm up to Ratty as well.
I have memories of Chili and Ratty loving each other. But I forgot just how long it actually took.
Fred felt safe with me after 2 or 3 days. Chili took a whole week before she was brave enough to approach me.
Chili was growling and hissing at Ratty for about a month. And then one day they rubbed noses and became best buddies.
So I guess these things take a bit longer than I remember.
It's all good. As I said yesterday, each day I'm seeing progress.
Here's a short video of Ratty and Chili napping together in 2016...
I've kept the bedroom door open with the baby gate closed.
On Monday night, I was laying in bed and Fred was sitting atop my belly. Ratty came to the door and Fred started growling fairly quietly.
On Tuesday, both cats were generally avoiding the door area, but they were both checking it out every now and then. At different times, so they never saw one another.
Last night, Fred was alone in the bedroom, sitting atop the bed. He could see me at the computer, and saw Ratty visiting me at the computer. Then Ratty spotted Fred and they stared at each other for a long while. There was no hissing and I don't think Fred growled, but his growls were so quiet I could have missed it.
This morning, before I got out of bed, I heard hisses and growls. I leaned over in bed to see what was going on, but in doing so, the bed made some noise which caused Fred to run away. So all I saw was Ratty sitting there, looking confused (and wanting his breakfast). I'm assuming it was Ratty who hissed and Fred who growled, but not sure.
About an hour ago they saw each other again (see video). There was absolutely no hissing or growling. :)
Got Ratty a new pal. He came to us on Wednesday. Currently have him in isolation in the bedroom (during the introduction period, so the cats get used to each other's smell before they meet).
His previous owner died, as did his 2 feline siblings, so he's been through a lot. He is roughly the same age as Ratty, and both cats have suffered losses.
He's been in hiding since Wednesday. This morning he opened up to me as I gave him scratchies and face massages and petting.
Lots of purring and kneading and him pushing himself into my hands/arms as he thoroughly enjoyed the affection/attention, but we still have a long road ahead. Although he was happy and was purring very loudly, his tail was down most of the time, showing that he still has a big lack of confidence. I hope to see that change soon -- that's the next big challenge.
Very happy this morning and very encouraged that he and Ratty will be best pals...
