My what big feet you have.. A Verreaux Eagle owlet we rescued now up near Groblersbrug on the Bots border.
These guys are the largest owl species found in Africa with the females reaching a weight of just over 3kg, which is more than four times the weight of a Spotted Eagle Owl.
They're also considered to have the second deepest bird call after the Southern Ground Hornbill with them being able to hear their mates call up to 5km away.
Other interesting facts. Let's see. Their wing span can reach 1.5 metres, favourite prey are hedgehogs but they're such opportunistic hunters that will catch a large variety of mammals like monkeys, mongooses, hares, genets, small antelope, young warthogs and young baboons. They also prey on most bird species and will regularly hunt other species of owls.
They're an apex predator with a healthy adult owl having no natural predators.
We'll now take the scenic drive home😉
