Our One-Health focused group has realized that dogs and people often nowadays suffer from the same diseases. They also share the same living environment, are subjected to the same toxins, drink the same water, and often even share the same food.

Phylogenetically dogs are much closer to humans than mice or other laboratory animals and the sterile environment of laboratory animals is not at all similar to that of humans. The dog is therefore an excellent model for research of diseases that humans and dogs have in common, and many of our findings are meaningful for humans as well.

Could your dog be in pain? 🐾 Like you, most pet parents are concerned about their pet’s future health and wish they could do something better about it. They want to make sure their pets are as happy and healthy as possible.

Dogs feel pain just as we humans do, but they cannot communicate their pain like we do, and as many as 1 in 5 dogs suffer from chronic pain. Luckily, assessing and recognizing pain can be aided by using a pain index!

Pawesomer includes a clinically validated pain monitoring tool to help you understand your dog even better. Regularly using the pain index helps you notice any changes as early as possible as well as track how any possible pain treatment is working.

The Helsinki Chronic Pain Index (HCPI) is a validated pain scoring tool used to recognize and monitor pain in dogs. It can also be used to track treatment and evaluate the overall health and well-being of your pet.

The HCPI pain index is developed by the University of Helsinki (Finland) Veterinary Teaching Hospital and is the result of years of clinical research. It has already been translated to 16 languages with more on the way!

“Our study set-up was of a high scientific standard. The sample sizes were sufficiently large, and all dogs sniffed an identical set of samples, allowing comparison of their performances. The dogs also had to successfully indicate sample sets containing only negative samples – an important trait when screening individuals. Another significant advantage was that samples were collected from outpatients instead of hospital patients. In addition, the testing was performed under real-life conditions rather than in a laboratory”, says the leader of the DogRisk research group and docent of clinical research in companion animals Anna Hielm-Björkman from the University of Helsinki.

A recent study by the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital confirmed that scent detection dogs can be taught to identify individuals with a coronavirus infection from skin swabs. In the experimental set-up the accuracy of the dogs in identifying the samples was 92 percent.

Body condition scoring is an easy-to-use tool to assess your pet's body fat coverage and general condition. The evaluation can be done at home without any equipment.

The body condition system can help you understand the ideal shape of your pet and help you maintain as ideal a score as possible. This can decrease the likelihood of health risks that stem from your pet being under or overweight.

The body condition system works on a scale of 1-9 from severely underweight (1) to severely obese (9), with 4 or 5 considered ideal. Each score has its own criteria, and a pet is evaluated by feel and sight, based on the pet's their ribs, spine and pelvis, as well as profile and overhead view.

No one criterion should be treated as absolute: you should always assess the pet as a whole and with regard to the breed and age of the pet.

Pawesomer includes a digital body condition system tool that makes the evaluation even easier. You can switch between different scores and see how the illustrative images and criteria change from one score to the next, making it easy to compare scores.
