Do a Google search for “dog trainer” and you’ll quickly get confused about whom to hire. If you search for a trainer, in less than one minute you might find a trainer with a Ph.D. in linguistics who calls himself a “dog behaviorist” and an “animal whisperer” who “has always been good with dogs”. Other trainers use words like “positive reinforcement”, “relationship based”, “humane”, “balanced” and “LIMA”. They all have different letters after their names and degrees in widely varied fields. To make matters more confusing, trainers with different certifications, no certifications, and divergent methods all show up on the same “best of” lists. You might call a trainer when your dog is actually suffering from anxiety and training basic manners, such as a sit-stay and eye contact, isn’t the right route.

It’s no wonder owners end up in the hands of poorly skilled professionals. I want dog owners to work with someone whose training decisions are guided by evidence so they have the best chance of a good outcome. So as a client, you might wonder, who goes where?

(EDIT: There are some solid professionals out there that understand the nuances of behavior and call themselves a dog trainer. It’s important to look for someone that has that experience and takes the dog’s emotional state into consideration when making a training plan. Not all issues can be resolved by teaching obedience behaviors nor can the be resolved by correcting the dog in order regain control.)

These two nervous pups came for meet and greet today and one hour test run. It can make a huge difference in anxiety to do this before a scheduled vacation. They went from looking for any possible avenue of escape to vying for a spot on my lap. Then off home. So they will remember next time that it's not the end of life as they know it!

"First, what are the by-products that are used in pet food? They’re not feathers and beaks. By-products are the co-product of food ingredients, including portions of an animal that are less commonly used in the U.S. human food supply but can provide essential nutritional benefits. Some examples of by-products include clean animal parts like the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, spleen, corn gluten meal and tallow. Doesn’t sound that different from what you’d see African wild dogs eating on Nat Geo WILD.

I’ll be the first to say that some of those things don’t seem appetizing to the human palate. However, by-products are incredibly nutrient-dense and highly palatable to animals. In fact, cats and dogs in the wild instinctively eat these organs first because they include a wealth of nutrients such as protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. So it’s not a bad thing to feed by-products in your pet food so long as it is part of a complete and balanced diet."

Do not presume Bordatella. Do not let your Vet presume. Hard as it is to get an appointment these days, something nasty is circulating in the GTA right now, and healthy young dogs are getting hit, hard. Just learned that another in Toronto died over weekend, 48 hrs after onset of symptoms.

If you utilise Off Leash Areas or Dog Daycares, be especially cognisant of any changes in your dog's health, or that of their playmates.

I encourage sharing of this post. Even better, subscribe to the Worms and Germs Blog. Dr Weese at University of Guelph is an excellent source of credible information.

Love you all. Stay healthy!

Severe Canine Respiratory Disease warning
There is a particularly virulent strain circulating in the GTA right now. Young, healthy dogs are getting seriously sick, some are dying. Dr Weese at University of Guelph is aware and I'm sure will be posting more on it as more facts are available.
If your dog starts to display symptoms of URI, call your Vet Clinic.

Dogs report satisfaction with improvements

Since taking over the Licensed Boarding Kennel in 2008, Luan Egan, Owner and Director of Barks and Recreation, has been consulting extensively with the canine clientele to ensure that when changes were made, Roverdale was barking up the right tree.

Farrah, a Belgian Malinois, and Lady, a Lab mix, hate it when the pesky Border Collie stares at them all the time. They like the new five foot high solid kennel walls made of white 2” thick food-grade plastic planks. Paired with the new commercial epoxy flooring, they are also very hygienic and easy to keep clean.
