Let’s be real - having a dog you can let people say hi to is AMAZING.
I have four dogs and only one of them (Charlie boo) is great with people. Theo’s ok, but he’s kind of a wrecking ball with excitement so I save the hello’s for Charlie.
And since 99% of the time when I’m walking a dog I have to say “no, you can’t pet them,” saying yes sometimes feels like a breath of fresh air. Like I’m a normal dog person.
But, here’s the thing / MOST owners are just like you! And saying no to pets on the walk is for the safety of our dogs.
I know it can feel weird and like you’re some kind of bad owner if you have a dog that needs boundaries / but let’s look at the bright side:
Your dog will focus WAY more on you than anyone else. Hello relationship builder! Walks will probably/hopefully be calmer because your dog doesn’t get super amped up at the sight of people since they usually equal treats or affection. That comes from YOU! Boom. You win. And saying no to hello’s makes the walk for just you and your dog/s. You are your dog’s pack and with that comes so many great benefits: respect, love, a relationship based on trust. I mean, the benefits are kind of endless.
So, as always / I hope this post reminds you that saying no to people isn’t weird and doesn’t make you mean - you’re just doing what’s best for your dog.
And if someone doesn’t like that / oh well. Let’s save our energy for the people who love a good boundary and respect you for setting it. Sound good?
