Luna's owner is moving by the end of August 2024 and Luna needs a home prior to then.

Name: Luna (additional photos in comments)
Age: 5 years
Breed: Lab/Pit mix, 60 pounds
S*x: Female (spayed)
Location: Ventura County, CA

Luna needs loving help! She is absolutely adorable, extremely smart, and sweet. She needs a chance with a new family who can accommodate her special needs.

Vet Info from Luna's owner: She is chipped and up to date on vaccinations.

From Luna's owner: She was great with all animals small and big but now with her being blind she seems nervous so I honestly don’t know how she will be. We don’t have any other animals other than her. I need to move by the end of next month. She is a great dog it’s just that my financial and living situation do not allow me to keep her. She doesn’t bark not even at strangers she’s really sweet. She became blind a couple of months ago. Per her Vet there is no cure and no explanation as to why this happened.

Dog Info: Luna has been with her family since she was 8 weeks old. The owner now has to move by the end of August from where they live and cannot take her. They would like for her to be with a family that has the space, time, and knowledge on blind dogs. They have asked friends but most of them don't have the space or they are not allowed to have dogs. She is leash trained but since she became blind, she is confused and it's hard to walk her and does not like the leash. She can sit and stay.

She is a great dog, very sweet and loving she deserves a better life than what they can currently provide. They cannot keep her as they have to let go of their home and will be renting a room where dogs are not allowed. She is young and deserves a good quality of life with her disability.

If you are interested in adopting Luna, please email us at [email protected]. Please note that in order to be considered you must provide a vet reference.

Name: Moses (additional photo in comments)
Age: 18 - almost 19
Breed: Yorkie (possibly mix), 20 pounds
S*x: Male (neutered)
Location: Kansas City, Kansas

Who needs this handsome old guy in their life? Moses is a sweet boy who lost his mom. He needs a new home to spend his remaining days being loved and pampered!

Vet Info: Moses is up to date on his vaccinations until the end of the month. He is neutered and completely blind in left eye, still possibly some shadows in the right eye from suspected cataracts. Moses is not microchipped.

Dog Info: Moses lost his mom a few years ago and his dad is looking to find him a better home. He travels frequently and Moses will be boarded anywhere from a week to a month at a time. Although he is always excited to see his dad, dad feels that he really deserves a better life than what he can provide at this time.

Moses is estimated to be 20 pounds, so it is possible that he is a Yorkie mix. Mom rescued him from a shelter 18 years ago and he has known no other home. Moses may be slowing down a bit but you would never know it at mealtime! Dad says he is a very spry guy when he's hungry!

Moses has free run of a couple rooms in the house, others are blocked off for his safety when his owner is not home. He is completely housebroken and leash trained. He knows the commands Come, Pe**ee, Lay Down and his mom had him very well trained. He has had a feline sibling his whole life and has had other dogs (large and small) living in the home with him. He does well with all animals. He also does well with men and women but probably would not do well in a home with small children due to his age. He is not possessive with treats, toys or food and has never shown any aggression.

As Moses' vision decreases Dad feels less comfortable walking him because he is worried about damaging Moses' eyes when he roots around bushes. Moses' also seems to be bothered when coming inside after being outside in bright sunlight. He is a very healthy boy (mom worked for a vet) and dad says that the way he acts, he will probably be here another 18!

UPDATE 7/8/24: Elliot has found a home! We wish Elliot and his new family all the best.

Name: ELLIOT (additional photos in comments)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Age: 6 months (45 #)
S*x: Male (Not neutered)
Location: Sedgwick County, KS

Vet Info: Elliott has some hearing ability, no vision. UTD on vaccines. HW negative (per caretaker). According to his vet records, Elliott has “great temperament, mouthing behavior”

Owner reports: Elliot is being helped by a Good Samaritan that can not keep him. “Elliott is mostly deaf. We aren't completely clear on what he can and cannot hear. He looks around and lays down when he hears planes flying overhead during walks. He knows if we open the door. He does not notice other dogs barking at him or seem to be bothered by most noises, that would attract other dogs to bark.”

Elliot is an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is reported to be housebroken and leash trained.

Elliot is noted to be outgoing and good with adults. According to his vet records, Elliott has “great temperament, mouthing behavior.” Elliott’s caregiver feels he would do best in a home without small children due to his mouthy behavior.

Name: SMOKEY
Breed: Staffordshire Terrier
Age: 6 years old (100 #)
S*x: Neutered (per caretaker)
Location: New Haven County, CT

Vet Info: Blind Dog. UTD on vaccinations (per caretaker). No HW test. “Smokey was born with eye sight. When he was about 2 he started bumping into walls. By age 6 (current) he appears to be 90-100% blind. However he has not been to an ophthalmologist…Smokey has an overgrowth on his paws that we believe to be hyperkeratosis. He has a licking habit due to anxiety that has lead to a sore on his paw. He takes Omega-3 vitamins with his meals.”

Owner reports: Smokey was recused in California and brought to Connecticut. “We need to re-home Smokey because of his aggression towards our infant daughter. He has been great with older children and adults. We're assuming he is protective of his eyes and uncomfortable with the unpredictability of the baby.”

Smokey is an indoor dog with the run of then house. He is reported to be house broken and leash trained. “Smokey is blind and hard of hearing however he responds to "sit" and "come" with tapping on the spot/surface you want him on.”

Smokey is reported to be good with adults, teenagers and other dogs. Smokey would do best in a home without small children. “Smokey bit our daughter a few weeks ago. The baby poked his eye and he made contact with the side of her face leaving 3 puncture marks. He released and cowered quickly. The skin was broken, she received 2 stitches. The bite was not extreme, however we are unable to keep them separated or supervised 24/7 as they both want to be around us constantly.”

“Smokey has been through so much, including new environments. He learned the outline of our house and yard within his first week. He learned how to go up and down our stairs. He is the best, most loving cuddle bug. He responds well to direction & is very loyal. He is house broken and leash trained but not very athletic. Smokey's favorite outside activity is to chase the hose.”

“Smokey was abused by his previous owner before entering our family. We are unsure how much physical damage is due to this, however the emotional affects are blatant. He is the sweetest boy & will do best with an owner who loves to cuddle and sleep with him.”

He adapted well to another dog in our home when he was 3. He lost his eyesight when he turned 4. The vet diagnosed him with Sudden Onset Retinal Disease. Since he has lost his eyesight he is very mellow and loves to nap and cuddle. He does not like children or small kids. He does well with other dogs and adults."

We're told R***r is in good health, and his owner gave more details: "He was diagnosed with SARDS 4 years ago. We have had R***r since he was 5 months old. I have tried to separate him from my toddler in our everyday but my daughter loves the other dog so much she doesnt know that he cannot see and startles him. He loves other dogs. He is a couch potato and loves to snuggle. He would love a home where it is quiet and does great with elderly."

16/05/2024

5/18/2024: Blue has a few more days at the hospital, and good news, he does not have an autoimmune disorder. His contact writes, "I also wanted to update that we got the skin biopsy results and thankfully he does not have any autoimmune skin disorder....He is recovering very well from his surgery and I was able to extend his stay with us until 5/21/24."
Please continue to share for Blue!

URGENT! 5/16/24: We've heard from Blue's contact and his last day at the hospital is tomorrow, 5/17, however she's going to try to find a place to have him medically boarded for a few days more. She is able to drive him within 400 - 700 miles from Southern California, including Nevada and Arizona.

Name: Blue (additional photo in comments)
Age: 4 years
Breed: Siberian Husky (56 pounds)
S*x: Male (neutered)
Location: Orange County CA

Blue is a 4 year old male neutered Husky that presented to an animal hospital for euthanasia. Blue had hereditary bilateral glaucoma and could no longer see. He was in so much pain that he was starting to refuse food. Blue's owners surrendered him to the animal hospital and Blue was able to have the surgeries he needed (bilateral enucleation, skin biopsy, and neuter). Due to limited space at the hospital, they are unable to keep him for much longer and are in urgent need of a foster or a forever home! They have contacted several rescues but have not yet had any luck.

Vet Info: Blue is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He is completely blind (recent bilateral enucleation). Blue's contact also writes, "Blue also had some crusts and scabbing around his nose that we took skin biopsies of during his surgery. We are pending results for potential autoimmune skin disease." He has not been heartworm tested, but they are able to test him.

Dog Info: Blue is housebroken and leash trained and is described as nervous and shy. He has not been exposed to other dogs at the hospital as he's still recovering from surgery, but we're told he does get curious when there is another dog barking.

Blue can be possessive with food, and has given some warning growls during treatment. His contact shared more details: "Blue will give warning growls when he is handled for treatment (IV catheter, injections, etc). However he behaves once muzzled. He has never snapped or bit anyone."

Blue's contact feels he's learning to adapt well to being blind. She writes, "He is already used to the hospital surrounding. He knows the run where is sleeps and loves feeling the grass on his walk."

They want us to know what a sweet and special boy he is, and they're desperately hoping to find him a place within the week. "Blue is a sweet boy who is easy to medicate (he is food motivated and will take pills when hidden in a meatball). He is still learning how to get around with no eyes but loves his walks and sniffing grass."

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in Blue. Please note we will ask for a vet reference.

Update 5/12/24: Myla now has a current rabies certificate. Myla just spent several hours at a local BDRA meet and greet. She was surprisingly good with gentle children. Previously a home with children would not be considered but gentle children over the age of 6 might be considered. BDRA volunteers have met Myla multiple times now and every month she seems to come out of her shell a little bit more. The right family can change this little girl's life! Myla also let a stranger hold her which was a first for her.

Myla is a Puppy Mill Rescue that needs more help than her owner can provide. She has come a long way since being rescued but will need lots of love and continued care.

Vet Info: Myla had Cherry Eye both eyes when she arrived. Left tear duct has popped out twice now. Needs another surgery. She is blind in left eye - if she has any sight it is just telling between dark and light. She should be getting eye drops but they are impossible for her owner to get administered. Myla has Head Shaking Syndrome. Owner originally thought it was a seizure but it is only her head. It has happened 28 times now. Vet believes that it is from an injury. It is between 5-15 minutes until it stops. It doesn't bother her, she just goes on, she is alert and can walk. Has luxating patella's in both knees. Will probably need braces eventually. Shoulder pops occasionally. Has had two surgeries so far, spay and eye. Did well recovering but about 50% of the time she chokes on water. She has digestive issues and a food she will eat one day she might refuse another. She regularly goes multiple days without eating. She is unable to walk through a doorway. Must be carried. If on a walk and she goes from a lit area to a dark area she will stop and wait until owner is by her side. Will not walk alone. She has anxiety, she started with crying and is now barking. Myla is not up to date with her vaccinations – 3 months overdue. Her last heartworm test last year was negative.

Dog Info: Myla is a very sweet but shy girl. Myla was a Puppy Mill dog that was malnourished and abused. She needs a family that has patience and is willing to work through her issues. Owner has had her for one year and is not in the position to give her all the care that she needs. When Myla arrived she was hand shy. Now the owner can pet her with no issues. She would not look at a person, now she looks at her owner all of the time. Regarding any aggression the owner states, “When she first arrived from Rescue that took her in from the Puppy Mill, she had an accident in the bathroom on the floor. I walked by and she grumbled out of fear, I believe. I wasn't going to scold her, so I just walked away and let her relax. That is the only issue that I have ever witnessed.” Myla has come a long way. She is now housebroken and will look at the door to let you know she wants to go out. She supposedly lived in a foster home with other dogs and got along well with them. I think she might do better in a home with another dog to teach her how to be a dog but would think she would do better with a calmer dog. She is also leash trained and enjoys going on walks. Because of Myla’s history she should not be with young children. She is good with women but very timid around men. Owner will require a vet reference. First time owners will not be considered. Myla needs an owner with experience with dogs with issues.
