4 weeks old - well, 4 weeks and 4 days by now, to be honest - and it is time to think about finding really nice families for the rabbits.

This year I have finally decided it is time to move some of the adult rabbits into proper pet homes.

There are now two non-breeding pairs and a couple of non-breeding boys. They all get enough care and are part of an extended rabbit family, but it seems a shame for rabbits who are so sociable not to get more individual fuss and attention.

Well, the little ones are now three weeks old and growing in confidence every day. The little black otter kit ventured out into the open area yesterday for the first time and started binkying.

We have eyes.

Their eyes were still closed yesterday morning but were open by tea time. They'll be starting to move around soon so today is moving day. They'll go into the bigger maternity pen with nice fine wire to keep them in and a low nest box so that when they come out they can get back in again.

And here they are. One is solid and the other broken but it'll be a few days before we can clearly see if it is black otter or castor in each case. They are quite small, but seem to be doing well. Then, they were a couple of days earlier than normal. At least it is nice and warm now and we don't have to worry about them chilling overnight.

Finally!

After yet another failed attempt to get Minty interested in breeding, I took Felix out and put Ambrose in and the transformation was extraordinary. In short it looks like we have babies due on the morning of June 24th.

Would anyone be interested in baby rabbits born towards the end of June and ready for their new homes around mid-August?...

Would anyone be interested in baby rabbits born towards the end of June and ready for their new homes around mid-August? We are in Oxfordshire just off the A40.

I'm thinking of having another go with Minty - seen here along with her son from two years ago - breeding her with Felix, and Ambrose a day or two later as a back-up plan.

No babies. Sniff.
But Mati is now sporting a fabulous dewlap. Perhaps it was just too early in the season for her.

07/03/2024

Did they or didn't they?

That is the question of the moment.

To breed or not to breed, that is the question.....

I hoped from early on that these two boys would go as a pair together as they were clearly pals from the off. But as they are still here, it has been easier to keep everyone together.

The last doe left on Sunday and then on Tuesday evening Dewi picked a fight with one of his brothers. Nice. After a break I tried them together again. But no. Dewi was having none of it. So it was time to separate the castor boys from Mati and Dewi.

Here you see them none the worse for having spent their first night outside 24 hours after separating from Mati.

Coronation day saw the little rabbits get their first taste of pouring rain. It didn't faze them at all - they ran about binkying with the sheer joy of being alive.

I wasn't moved to sit out there with them to take pictures, though. Funny that.

Then today the sun shone and shone.

Little rabbits enjoying the sunshine and the grass...

They are now 6 weeks old and will be ready for new homes from 15th April. Both parents have excellent temperaments and as these little ones have been brought up indoors and handled every day, they are remarkably well-socialised already. They will make fabulous family pets whether as house rabbits or outside in the garden.

With the fine spring weather, I thought it time the little ones got to experience being on the grass. They did not need telling what to do with it, either.

You should always be cautious about letting rabbits eat too much fresh grass. It is very rich and can upset their tummies, so they were only out there for half an hour.

Now aged 3 weeks and 3 days these delightful little creatures look just like little rabbits. they are eating solid food with gusto.

Today for the first time the carpet was covered with tiny droppings!
But they are making good use of their litter tray, so that's hopeful.

They are spending a lot more time out of the nest.

Two of them have also managed to climb up the fine mesh I put in to keep them inside the pen, and then climb out through the wider mesh at the top - just like their Daddy.

First picture. Here are three of Mati's little ones - castor, black otter and broken. I very much wanted to have an early record of this one's colour. Broken orange, perhaps? hard to know just yet. But no black tips at all, for sure. I couldn't see any spots at all on day 2 and thought it might be all white. But by day 3 you could make out these pale markings. It is likely we'll keep this one.

24/02/2023

Well, we lost 2, but the remaining 7 all look fine. Some are bigger than others but they are all developing. They are now all rather more furry. Three are castor, two black otter, one self black and the broken is a colour we've not seen here before which is rather exciting. I can't wait for it to be a bit bigger to see the full effect.
