It’s been a hot minute since I last posted on my farm page. We got a new puppy who we named Sweet pea and the turkeys have made lots more babies! Sp is learning all about farm life under the watchful eye of her Mum and Dad. 🥰
Buddy Jr. takes care of his babies 🥰
I have two female turkeys that hatched out a total of 6 babies. 4 survived. They free range all day around the property and at night go into their separate nests (not close to eachother). They co parent all day and our Tom follows them around keeping a watchful eye on his family. So tonight the Moms decided that the kids are old enough to sleep in the trees and on the 2x4’s that surround the enclosure area. It took a couple hours but everyone finally found their place and got situated for the night. Three of the babies were left alone to sleep on the door of the enclosure while the Mom settled down a few feet away near the Dad. We have a couple resident feral cats that come in every night to hunt mice and I’ve been worried sick they will get the babies. We put several Arlo cameras out to alert us when a cat comes near. So after a few times of the cat coming into the enclosure (not phased by the cameras and lights) I decided to take the three babies that were sleeping on the door and put them next to their Mom & Dad. When I put the babies on the 2x4 next to him, he lifted his wing and they snuggled right in! I have never seen that and I’ve been raising turkeys for 7 years now. 💕 I love watching them travel around the yard together as a family and tonight was the icing on the cake. He’s the most caring father I’ve ever seen. He was prepared to sleep on the ground and let them go under him if they couldn’t get in the tree or up on the ledge. 💕 I love turkeys! They have great personalities and tight family bonds.
I put one of our Arlo cameras in the nest to watch Mommy and her babies. I’m calling this Turkey TV 🤣 I didn’t think about doing this until after they were all hatched, but next year I will start the process much sooner. I check on them multiple times a day. 💕 #TurkeyTV.
These two hens stick together all day and other separate ways at bed time. One sleeps in a coop with her two babies & the other sleeps in our blackberry bush out front with her 4 babies.
Buddy jr. is always out there ready to protect them from predators. ❤️
