Your puppy’s CRITICAL developmental Period is between the ages of 8-16 weeks! this is when your pup is a sponge and should be brought out to experience the world in a safe and fun way. The world can be a scary place for our dogs. It’s up to you, as your dog’s owner to expose him/her to different environments while having positive experiences in those new situations. This is what true socialization is about!!

When do you start training your puppy!? You Start DAY 1 of getting your puppy! And just keep in mind, even if you aren’t “training” they are learning! It just might not be the behaviors you want them to learn! This is an extremely important stage in your pups development. This is when they learn to interact with humans and learn rules and boundaries and how to live in your human world. It should be all about exposure, environmentals and teaching neutrality to dogs and people. This is the time to begin imprinting your behaviors, teaching your games such as tug and chase and catch and building your bond with your dog based on respect not fear! Direction > affection! Allow them to earn reinforcement so they don’t become the entitled brat that runs your roost!

99.9% of the puppies that come to me are usually "pretty good", yet, there is always a "but". Most clients that bring a dog in is using the "but" phrase. "my dog is really well behaved BUT, he/she jumps on guests. BUT, he/she pulls on our walks. The BUT list goes on...And then we see what is really happening. There is no accountability, no boundaries, no guidance, and no consequences for unwanted behaviors. The dog needs clear communication, structure, rules and a routine. Without, they are out of control, selective hearing, hyperactive, destructive, barking, jumping and/or anxious. They are just unsure about their role in this world and need your leadership!
