The Kenora Cat Shelter opened it's doors in February 2003. Since that time over 1700 cats have found refuge at the shelter, and over 1500 of them have been returned to their owners or found new forever homes. We are completely run by volunteers and donations of supplies and money. The Cat Shelter is always looking for new volunteers to help feed the cats and clean their cages (which happens twice

Just a few things about our open house!
It is our sweet girl Booters 18th birthday today! 🎉
Booters came to us 8 years ago and is still as spicy as the day she came in. She’s a cranky old girl but we wouldn’t change a thing about her! Her sass is what we love most about her. Booters has long retired from the shelter life and she lives with Celynn, the previous owner of the Kenora Cat Shelter. She is truly living her best life. You would never guess she was 18 based off how great she looks and feels.
We love you Boots! 💕

Meet Wilson! Please share to help Wilson find a home!
In October, Wilson will have been at the shelter for 3 years 😞
Wilson is a very curious and playful boy. He loves people and is very affectionate. He likes to curl up into your arms and rub against your legs. Wilson gets along great with other cats and enjoys having a buddy to wrestle and play with. He is always very curious of other cats and just wants to be everyones friend. He's such a loveable guy. His favourite activity is chasing toys around the shelter as you throw them. His favourite toy is ping pong balls and he jumps 4 feet up trying to catch them mid air! Wilson loves to sit on the windowsill and watch the birds and squirrels. Wilson loves to chat and is really good at letting you know what he needs - treats, a ping pong ball throw or a snuggle. He is very adventurous, loves to explore and he often gets himself stuck in places - curiousity gets the best of him!
Wilson is one of our special needs cats. He is on daily medication (fluoxetine) to reduce stress, and urinary food as he was diagnosed with feline idiopathic cystitis. This means he can develop urinary infections when stressed. He has been so good with his medication and eats it in his food no problem. He also hasn't had any urinary issues since starting the medication and the urinary food - go Wilson! He will require someone who has patience to let him take his time to settle into his new home. He would do great in a home with another cat to be his buddy.
Wilson has been with us for almost THREE years. He is so ready to get out of the shelter and find his forever family.

Meet Xyla!
Xyla is very affectionate and outgoing. She loves everyone she meets. Xyla is very playful and energetic, she enjoys running around the shelter and chasing after toys. This gorgeous calico gets along great with other cats and would do great in a home with kids. She plays very gentle and loves to give kisses and hugs.

Meet Iris!
Iris is a calm and affectionate girl. She loves snuggling on your lap and likes to give head butts. Iris is super playful and loves catching toy mice mid air. She gets along great with other cats and dogs. Iris is very laid back and likes to spend the day lounging and relaxing. She loves soaking up the sun in the window and taking her cat naps. This sweet girl would do great in any home.

Meet Xavier!
Xavier is the cuddliest, sweetest boy. All he wants is to be either in your arms or on your shoulder. Xavier came to us as an orphaned kitten and was separated from his mom too soon - because of this he loves to suckle on ears and knead your face. Xavier is really playful and loves running around with all the cats. He’s very outgoing and sweet. Xavier is very talkative and has lots to say! He will have full conversations with you. Xavier would excel in a home with kids or other animals - he’s very social and gentle.
Xavier has had his first set of vaccines, he is microchipped, and dewormed.

Meet Jade!
Jade is a bundle of energy and affection! This sweet girl is super playful and loves chasing toys around the shelter. She’s often running by carrying a spring in her mouth. Jade is very outgoing and loves other cats. She loves getting a snuggle in after play time is over. Jade would do great in a home with kids to keep her entertained.

Our sweet boy Uh-Oh is finally ready for adoption!

Uh-Oh came to us in January with severe head wounds from an animal attack and blastomycosis in his eyes. He has spent months recovering and learning how to adapt to being a fully blind cat. Now Uh-Oh is fully recovered, blasto negative and ready to find his forever home!! Uh-Oh is very talkative, and loves to have conversations. He picks up on sounds to follow you around the house and to find out where to step. He is very playful and loves finding toy mice around the house - he throws them up in the air and hunts them. Uh-Oh is extremely affectionate, he likes to bury his head into you and knead on your lap purring non stop. He loves his belly being rubbed and lies on his back soaking it all in. This boy is an absolute gem and he would be the best cat for the right family.
Since Uh-Oh is completely blind, he will need a special owner that can take the time to teach him the layout of their house, but he is a fast learner! Uh-Oh would do best in a house without other cats as unfortunately, he plays very aggressive. He does do well with big dogs! Uh-Oh has ongoing congestion issues due to the injuries to his nose/forehead that crushed his nasal cavities - this gave him a really cute congested meow but he will need close monitoring of his nose.

‼️ The Kenora Cat Shelter needs your help!!
We are officially in a STATE OF EMERGENCY! ‼️
WE NEED SUPPORT!
We are currently caring for 118 cats/kittens within the cat shelter and in foster homes. On top of this, we have a surrender list of 80+ waiting to come in with more calls coming in daily! We CANNOT take anymore cats at the moment. We are over capacity!!
Our monthly costs for vet bills, litter, food, microchips, rent and utilities range from $12,000 to $15,000 a month. On average, we go though 28 cans of cat food, and two large bags of paper litter a day!!
In 2024 alone, we have taken in 256 cats. We’ve had 85 adoptions, and 124 have been transferred to Thunderbay Humane Society and OSPCA. At the rate we are having cats come in, 2024 has been a record breaking year for intakes.
We are run entirely by donations and volunteers. We receive ZERO government funding. We need your support to continue our work!

We need your help!! Our shifts are 8am-11am and 4pm-6pm every single day. Our shifts involve feeding the cats, cleaning their kennels and litterboxes and providing much needed enrichment for the cats. We need volunteers that are able to commit to minimum 2 shifts per month. Minimum age to volunteer within the shelter is 16 years old.

Leading by example in kindness and compassion were Blake who donated their chore money, Brady who donated proceeds from their Farmer's Market cotton candy sales and Reese who donated their tooth fairy money and some extra cash from their piggy bank! Meet Tim and Vin!
These two are so much fun. They love running around full sprint chasing after each other and toys. Tim and Vin are very affectionate and love to give kisses on your lips. They purr constantly and love hugs. They are very outgoing and get along well with other cats and dogs. These two can’t wait to find their forever home!

A happy Uh-Oh update for everyone! This boy is such a fighter. He is battling blasto and recovering from a dog attack. His wounds are all healing and slowly closing over. Uh-Oh is eating like a champ - his favourite meal is a bowl of temptations and kitten food but he’ll eat just about anything you put in front of him. We’re trying to get his weight back up so he’s allowed all the snacks. He’s still blind but adjusting very well to it. His right eye will need to be removed once he’s healthy enough for the anesthetic. He will be on blasto meds for at least 6 months - our last blasto cat was 1 year on medications. In the meantime, he’s getting all the love and treats. We are so grateful we were able to get him the veterinary care he needs, and he is so thankful to be feeling better! Thank you everyone for your donations towards his care!!
