Our Story
Tank was a 7-8 year old Male Lab who most likely lived his whole life outside. He came into rescue on accident. Tank did not know how to go up the stairs, and would not cross door thresholds. We had to carry him in and out of the house during his first few weeks. He was un-neutered, but FCACC neutered him and also gave him a dental as well as tested him for tick bourne diseases. His blood work came back healthy and normal but a bunch of his teeth had to be pulled. He barely has any teeth on one side of his mouth. He has a tatto that is hard to read in right ear and we also micro-chipped him too. He is an anxious dog that has a hard time being left alone. He pants, barks, drools and destroys things when we leave and urinates and poops in the house. He is deathly afraid of thunderstorms and can sense a storm coming 24 hours in advance even if the skies are blue and sunny. He trembles and stops dead in his tracks when someone sneezes. We have tried the following to help him out: Thundershirts, Dog Appeasing Pheromone Collars, Rescue Remedy, Xanax, Prozac, Tryptophan, rubbing him with Bounce dryer sheets when storms are coming, Colostrum Complex/B1/L-Theanine, Trazodone & Prozac. In addition, we worked with Janice Triptow on behavior modification. We walk him the same route every single day, staying close to our house and not going to far out of his comfort zone. He prefers to be in our very small yard or inside our home. After doing months of behavior modification training we consulted a DVM who specializes in behavior disorders. We are currently working with a DVM Animal Behaviorist here in Chicago (Dr. Kelly Ballantyne). Initially we had to video tape him every time we left the house. I watched hours and hours of web cam video and figured out when he started to panic and what he did when he panicked. Our vet behaviorist reviewed all of the tapes too. We have had him on 40 mg of Prozac and 150 mg of Trazodone daily for 1.5 years. He is by no means perfect, but he is much better. We tried weaning him off of his medication however we figured out quite quickly that he will need to be on meds for the rest of his life. Having a dog with separation anxiety is very challenging and stressful on our family. We need to find a solution to this problem and I am dedicated to helping this guy be the best he can be.
