Let’s waddle with the penguins for African Penguin Awareness Day! 🐧African penguins are considered one of three penguin species that require urgent conservation intervention, with the species losing over 70% of their population in the last thirty years, and 97% of their population overall. Ripley’s Aquariums is proud to support the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), a dedicated nonprofit organization working to reverse the decline of seabird populations through rescue and rehabilitation efforts. As Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited facilities, Ripley’s Aquariums also collaborates with the Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) program, which brings together groups of AZA members with field-based partners to enhance conservation success for threatened species worldwide. If you want to show your support for these precious penguins, you can do so right here at the aquarium! Ripley’s Aquariums donates regularly to SANCCOB from our penguin paintings, with fifty percent of all proceeds from these paintings going directly to SANCCOB’s conservation efforts, helping to fund their ongoing work and support their vital programs. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3PffM9I
It was time for a reunion this week for Bandit the sea turtle! 🐢 Bandit's journey began in April 2021 when she was discovered stranded on Little St. Simon's Island, Georgia. Rescued by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island, Bandit had sustained injuries from a boat propeller that left her with partial paralysis and buoyancy issues. Her recovery was marked by a special gesture from Kendall Barfield, a young girl from Columbus, Georgia, who symbolically adopted Bandit. Kendall, who has faced her own challenges with spina bifida, felt a deep connection to Bandit's story. Kendall recently visited Ripley's Marine Science Research Center to meet Bandit in her new home. During the visit, Ripley's team showcased Bandit's specialized weight pouch, an essential mobility aid that allows Bandit to swim comfortably despite her past injuries. With the support of Ripley's team, Bandit now thrives at the Marine Science Research Center, where her weight pouch is regularly adjusted to maintain optimal buoyancy. Want to visit Bandit yourself? Visit the Marine Science Research Center and say SHELL-o!
Connecting all three Ripley’s Aquariums is Ripley’s Marine Science Research Center, a state-of-the-art quarantine, rescue, and research facility that supports Ripley’s conservation efforts and advancements in the sustainability of species. From conservation research efforts, such as the ones that resulted in Rip, the world’s first successful birth by artificial insemination of a sand tiger shark, being born, to animal rescues like Bandit the sea turtle and Cheddar the orange lobster, the Marine Science Research Center is the center of much of the groundbreaking research that Ripley’s Aquariums are proud to take part in.
Let's de-stress by swimming with the rays. ✨ Ripley's Aquarium currently hosts a monthly program that offers veterans and their families the ability to swim with stingrays to support their mental health! U.S. Army Veteran Lou Krieger spearheads the program which continues to help countless veterans and their families who struggle with PTSD. We’re proud to host this program and help support the mental well-being of our veterans.
